The Overlap Between Compulsive Overeating,
Binge Eating Disorder and Obesity

When does overeating become a ‘problem’? When is obesity related
to compulsive overeating or binge eating? How can you tell? This
workshop will address these questions and more, providing a
comprehensive overview of the ‘what’ and ‘what to do about it’
regarding compulsive overeating and the new DSM-5 diagnosis,
binge eating disorder (BED) and how eating disorders may interface
with obesity.
Research indicates up to 30% of individuals seeking weight loss
services struggle with eating disorders making these issues widely
prevalent. Open to clinicians of all sorts who interface with people
struggling with weight-related issues or eating disorders, this
workshop will provide practical and useful techniques drawing from
CBT and Mindful Eating.
Participants will walk away with the ability to identify and learn:
• three indicators that obesity may be linked to an eating
disorder;
• the differences between obesity, Compulsive Overeating and
Binge Eating Disorder for diagnostic purposes;
• at least two Mindful Eating therapeutic techniques to use in
practice.

About the Presenter
Jillian Lampert, PhD, RD, LD, MPH, FAED
Dr. Lampert is the Chief Development Officer for The Emily Program, a comprehensive eating disorder
treatment program with locations in Ohio, Minnesota and Washington where she oversees community
connections, marketing, business development, and policy work. Additionally, Dr. Lampert is President of
the Residential Eating Disorders Consortium (REDC), an organization whose main goal is to ensure access to
residential care for individuals by working collaboratively to address issues that impact the residential eating
disorder treatment community. She is a current Board Member of The Emily Program
Foundation, a Minnesota based organization promoting eating disorder education and advocacy and a
member of the Eating Disorder Research Society (EDRS). She holds an adjunct graduate faculty position in the
Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota.
Two (2) CEUs available for RDs. This program has been approved for 2 CEU hours by the Washington Association for Marriage and Family
Therapy.
