ENGLISH I
(Three hours and a quarter)
(The first 15 minutes of the examination are for reading the paper only. Candidate must NOT start

SECTION A: Writing [60 Marks]

Direction: Write an original essay using the features of an argumentative essay on any ONE of the
following topics. (You are reminded that you will be awarded marks for orderly and correct
presentation of material, use of appropriate features and style and general accuracy of spelling,
punctuation and grammar.)
A. In the Bhutanese education system a milestone was created by the Ministry of Education’s
introduction of the Kegan’s Cooperative Learning in place of the traditional pedagogy for the
qualitative teaching and learning.
B. In recent local government election, the media reported that instead of the new candidates some
former Gups were being re-nominated. It was a wise decision of the people because it allows the
former Gups to complete their unfinished developmental works in the service to TsaWa Sum.
C. School is the place for learning and development. Should grade twelve students be excluded from
the extracurricular activities as it hampers their academic excellence?
D. After nine long years, the Royal Education Council is likely to reintroduce Shakespeare in the
English curriculum for secondary schools from the next academic year. The reintroduction of
Shakespearean play would allow the learners to appreciate and love literature.

on conflict (man vs society, man vs man and man vs self) and character development. (You are
reminded that in the above task, you will be assessed on expression, style and mechanics.)
