Dear Cal State LA Prospective Graduate,
The 30th Annual Celebration of Black Graduates, sponsored by the Pan African Student Resource Center,
will take place Sunday, May 14, 2017 at 7 pm at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at California
State University, Los Angeles, 5151 State University Dr., Los Angeles, CA, 90032. This
ceremony is a way for you to celebrate your academic achievements with your families and other
significant people who helped contribute to your success.
You have to register in advance to participate in the Black Grad Celebration. You can register online at
www.calstatela.edu/usu/grad (debit/credit via PayPal, $51.80) or in-person at the Cross Cultural Centers
($50, cash only) through 4 pm, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 (or until space is filled, whichever comes
first). We encourage you to take care of your registration early.

The cost to participate in the ceremony is $50 ($51.80 if paying online). This fee will include:

Ten (10) tickets for 10 guests (assigned seats in the Luckman Fine Arts Complex)
We can accept 110 student participants total in the Black Grad Celebration. Participation is
based on a first-come, first-served basis.
Please mark the date Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 4 pm in your calendars (note that if participant
spaces are filled, we will close registration before the 3/29/17 date). This is the deadline to be included in
the 2017 Black Grad program book (and receive sash and extras). All of these materials must be turned
in to the Cross Cultural Centers or the online registration site: www.calstatela.edu/usu/grad.
Registration fees are non-refundable.
Once we have received confirmation of your registration, we will send you an e-mail confirming your
participation, a draft of your name and grad book acknowledgements for you to proofread, and
information on ceremony details and parking.

Administration Office, U-SU 3rd floor, Room 306, or online at www.calstatela.edu/usu/grad.

Stop by the CCC to process your paperwork first
Pay in-person at the U-SU Administration Office, U-SU 3rd floor, Room 306. Make sure you have
stopped by the CCC first.
The CASH REGISTER closes promptly at 4pm; and only cash and money orders are accepted for
in-person payments.
CREDIT/DEBIT (online at www.calstatela.edu/usu/grad; $50 + $1.80 fee)
• Online registration payment will be made through PayPal via DEBIT/CREDIT and will incur an
additional $1.80 service fee.
• You must have all your materials ready – thank you statement, photo file to upload, registration
form information, etc…
• The online registration process includes uploading a graduation photo that will be used in the
program book. Please see attached guideline for photo requirements.

Student Speakers/Grad Perspective submission deadline. To be considered, please submit your 1 – 2
page essay (500 words maximum), on the topic: “WHAT DOES IT MEANS TO BE A BLACK COLLEGE
GRADUATE TODAY.”

Please note that we will cap participation at 110 graduates. NO exceptions. If all 110
graduates happen to register within the early registration period, then the ceremony will be closed to
further participants. We encourage you to get your money and paperwork in as soon as possible. There
are specific steps outlined on the next page to guarantee complete registration but please keep in
mind that you are not registered until your fees are paid. See next page for details.

If you are turning in hard copy forms, please turn in completed paperwork (registration form and typed
acknowledgements for program book) to Shanique Davis or Frederick Smith, at the Cross Cultural
Centers, U-SU 2nd floor, Room 206, 8am–5pm, Mon–Fri. Please call ahead of time to make sure that one
us is in the office, 323.343.5001. Once a full-time CCC staff member or Shanique has *signed off, you
may proceed to the next step.
After your registration is confirmed, you will receive an email regarding picking up your tickets.

Turn in registration fee to U-SU Administration Office, U-SU, Room 306. Payments are accepted
between 8:30am–4:00pm Monday through Friday. Cash or money orders accepted only. Make
money orders payable to University–Student Union. In memo, please write “Black Grad 2017.” Once you
have received a receipt of payment, proceed to next step. Please keep your receipt.

If you register in-person, please proceed to www.calstatela.edu/usu/grad to upload grad photo.
All photos MUST meet the following requirements:
• You MUST provide 1 photo with each application
• Color or Black & White
• Professional attire
• Cap and gown preferred
• Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
• Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera (no selfie))
• The head is about 1 inch from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (see diagram)
• Photo submitted will not be returned
• Digital photo needs to be in high resolution quality at least 200dpi
• File size at least 1MB
• Dimension of the photo is 2” x 2” or 600 x 600 pixels
Please turn in your photo according to Cultural Grad Photo Requirements. Please see attached sheet for
the requirements. Please note that submitted photos will not be returned

In May, we will hold information sessions for participants on campus (dates announced via email) to
share ceremony details. We will notify you if there is an official rehearsal scheduled. These information
sessions will help answer your questions.

The Black Graduate Perspective is a 1-2 page speech given by a member of the graduating class. Please submit your
essay (500 words maximum) and application by 4pm – Wednesday, March 29, 2017 to the Cross Cultural
Centers office, University-Student Union 2 n d floor to Fred Smith, Alejandro Muro, or Laura Tejeda for consideration.
Late submissions will NOT be accepted or considered.

Example #1: I would like to thank my parents for their support and encouragement through my long journey at Cal
State L.A. Without my family and friends, I would not have accomplished all my goals. I would also like to thank all my
professors for pushing me to work harder. I am grateful for all the wonderful memories and great friends I made at
this university, and I will keep striving for the next big thing.
