Voice Essay
Directions:
After you have read the Hanukkah scene (Act I, Scene 5), you will rewrite the scene from the
perspective of one of the characters. Your essay should be at least 1 page in length. You must
choose one of the following characters:
Anne Frank
Mr. Van Daan
Mr. Frank
Mrs. Van Daan
Mrs. Frank
Peter Van Daan
Margot Frank
Mr. Dussel
To write your essay, you should pretend that you are the character and write what you see through
his/her eyes. You may look back at the scene in the textbook if you need to. Make sure that you
include all the action in which your character was involved. Do not make this all dialogue! I already
read the play. Make sure that you portray the emotion that your character would have been feeling,
as well as what the character would have seen, heard, felt, touched, tasted (as necessary). This essay
should be written in 1st person perspective using pronouns such as I, me, we, us, etc.
This will be a major grade. You will be graded over Conventions, Voice, Ideas, Word Choice, and of
course, Perspective. This is worth a total of 50 points.
