Emese Szilágyi
Emese Szilágyi has been working at the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service,
Office of the Chief Medical Officer in Budapest, Hungary since 2010 and is deputy head of
Department of Epidemiology. She studied medicine, had her first speciality exam in
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and worked a clinician for 12 years. Since 2001 she has
been working in the field of hospital epidemiology and infection control. She had her
speciality exam in public health in 2004 and defended her PhD in 2010. She attended
Foundation Course in Hospital Infection Control and Hospital Hygiene Course in 2003 and in
2004, both trainings provided by Health Protection Agency England. She has been involved
in infection prevention and control activities at national level, including building up and
running the Hungarian nosocomial surveillance system, development of national guidelines,
elaboration of the national infection control programme as well as education in infection
prevention and control. She participated in the following international projects: HELICS
(Hospitals in Europe Link for Infection Control through Surveillnce); Concordance study of
healthcare –associated infections definitions; PROHIBIT (Prvention of Hospital Infections by
Intervention and Training) and SIGHT (Systematic review and evidence-based guidance on
hospital infection control programme).
