FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY GIRLS
Sometimes it’s a struggle to come up with new ideas for articles for this newsletter so I was
very grateful when this was sent to me by one of my parents. These words are not just for our
girls but for all of us to take note of and act upon.
"My daughter starts middle school tomorrow. We've decorated her locker, bought new uniforms, even surprised
her with a new backpack. But tonight just before bed, we did another pre-middle school task that is far more
important than the others. I gave her a tube of toothpaste and asked her to squirt it out onto a plate. When she
finished, I calmly asked her to put all the toothpaste back in the tube. She began exclaiming things like 'But I
can't!' and 'It won't be like it was before!' I quietly waited for her to finish and then said the following: 'You will
remember this plate of toothpaste for the rest of your life. Your words have the power of life or death. As you go
into middle school, you are about to see just how much weight your words carry. You are going to have the
opportunity to use your words to hurt, demean, slander and wound others. You are also going to have the
opportunity to use your words to heal, encourage, inspire and love others. You will occasionally make the wrong
choice; I can think of three times this week I have used my own words carelessly and caused harm. Just like this
toothpaste, once the words leave your mouth, you can't take them back. Use your words carefully. When others
are misusing their words, guard your words. Make the choice every morning that life-giving words will come out
of your mouth. Decide tonight that you are going to be a life-giver in middle school. Be known for your gentleness
and compassion. Use your life to give life to a world that so desperately needs it. You will never, ever regret
choosing kindness.' "

I take away two things from this article. Firstly, social media is not all bad, it really depends on
how we use it. Gems like the above article appear every so often on my Face Book page and I
just want to read them over and over again. If only our teenagers would pay as much attention
to them as we do! Secondly, how careful do we need to be with what we say? We use the
acronym THINK when talking to the girls about posting on social media but it also has
relevance before we say something: is it True, is it Helpful, is it Inspiring, is it Necessary, is it
Kind? If not, then perhaps we shouldn’t say it. I shall be making it a point to remember that
plate of toothpaste and the effect my words can have on others.

MRS TAYLOR'S BRAG BOOK
From an observer at AgQuip
“I want to say that the girls were magnificent, very helpful, willing, generous, polite and happy
to help and to give of themselves, you couldn't find better Ambassadors for Calrossy.” These
girls helped out with the face painting at the Life Quip stand. Well done girls. I am proud to be
a part of such a caring community.
Maddie Hoath
Congratulations to Maddie on her recent successes in Speech and Drama at the Inverell
Eisteddfod. Maddie achieved five first places and one highly commended in the six events she
entered and then went onto win the Speech and Drama Championship. This is an amazing
achievement. Well done Maddie.
Music - Lucy Cantrill
Lucy Cantrill, talented Year 11 musician, continued to demonstrate her considerable ability by
achieving a High Distinction in her recent Grade 8 Piano exam. Congratulations Lucy. Your
hard work and determination has obviously paid off.
Recital Night
Tuesday night saw our Years 11 and 12 Music students perform an entertaining program of
varying pieces of music played on various instruments. While we enjoyed the delicious desserts
from the kitchen, our students serenaded us in fine style. Congratulations on an excellent
evening and thank you to Mrs Turner for her hard work in preparing for the night.
New England Sings
Rehearsals for this commenced yesterday. This promises to be a very entertaining concert as
the choirs of the New England region join together to perform. Details of this event will be
published shortly.
YEAR 12
Students in Year 12 are approaching the “business end” of their schooling. They survived their
trial HSC exams and some students are still finishing courses and undertaking assessments.

This is a valuable time for students when revision time is available in class. Please encourage
your daughters to make the most of their class time and to seek assistance from their teachers
when needed.
Information will be available shortly regarding a Year 12 Retreat which will take place for the
girls in Week 10. Please check your emails regularly for details of this and also information
regarding Graduation Day (22 September).
YEAR 11
Congratulations to the Year 11 girls. They have been working hard, preparing for their final
exams in Weeks 9 and 10. As well as this they have organised the House Challenge (thank you
to Emily Jarrett and her band of helpers) and are in the processes of undergoing elections for
student leadership positions for 2017. The Year 11 Dinner is being held on Friday 9 September
and plans for that are well underway. It is important that we support the girls during this busy
time. They are working hard and are keen to do their best in all areas.
P & F MEETING
The Secondary Girls’ P & F will meet on MONDAY 29 August in the Drawing Room on the

GRANDPARENTS/SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY
This is a highlight event of the year. On Friday 2 September, we welcome grandparents and
special friends to our wonderful campus for a day of entertainment, experiences and spending
time with their special girls. Please ensure that grandparents/special friends have sent in an

SPORT NEWS
Netball/Hockey
The last week of Netball is being played this week with a number of our teams vying for
positions in the final series. Semi-finals for this competition will commence on Saturdays
3 September.
The Monday night Hockey competition is also playing the last round of games this week, with
semi-finals commencing Monday 5 September.
Thank you to the many coaches, managers and players who have committed to both these
sports during the season.
The Calrossy Bellbirds recently competed in the Tamworth Netball Carnival. I received a letter
from a parent of a Primary school team competing at the Carnival on the same court during
the day. The letter thanked the Bellbirds for the example they had shown the players in the
Primary team. The parent highlighted the Bellbirds general attitude, sportsmanship,
encouragement and support they had shown to members of the Primary team during the day.
With finals approaching in a number of sports I would also like to offer a reminder to both
parents and students of their expected behavior at and around the sporting fields of
Tamworth. While the umpiring may not always be perfect, the girls who are involved in this
important aspect of the sport need support, not criticism, if we are to assist in improving their
standards. I would also like to stress that while winning is fun and has its place in sport - at
school level it should not be the primary focus.
“It is your response to winning and losing that makes you a winner or a loser.”
- Harry Sheehy, athletic director
AICES Athletics
Our AICES Athletics team travel to the AICES Athletics Championships on Wednesday
31 August. The team has been training regularly under the guidance of Mrs Colleen Klasen. I
thank Mrs Klasen and the team for their dedication.

P & F NEWS
I would like to thank everyone who attended the 2016 Calrossy Anglican School Dinner Dance.
It is great to see this evening recommence and it was fantastic to see parents and friends from
all three learning centres at the event. A great night was had by all, with a superb meal supplied
by the catering staff.
I would also like to thank the three people who put in the hard work to re-establish this event Sam Ison, Nicole Henry and Rob Collins and the people who assisted with both the setting up
of the hall and the clean up afterwards.
I cannot go without thanking Mr Black for his assistance and support of this event and his
very late night waiting for the band to pack up.
Thank you all again for your support.
