Notes ON THE PROGRAM
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Mass in C major
(“Coronation”), K.317
Mozart’s choices for how to set the
“Coronation Mass” are clear. The Gloria
and Credo are set almost syllabically, with
one syllable for every note and very few
text repetitions. Mozart breaks up the
Gloria into its customary subdivisions by
alternating the ensemble of soloists with
the chorus, without slowing down the
momentum. The musical structure of the
Gloria is neatly rounded out into a large
A-B-A structure. He handles the Credo in
the same manner, except for the “Et incarnates est,” the incarnation, passion, and
death of Jesus where masses since the
Middle Ages have typically slowed down
with contrasting emotive music.
For the shorter movements Mozart generally keeps up a pretty good clip. In the
Classical period the Kyrie was generally
set as a stately opening number befitting
the dignity and importance of the mass.
Mozart’s Kyrie is in keeping with the
tradition. In the Sanctus the words
“Hosanna in excelsis” surround the subdivision “Benedictus,” which traditionally
was a place for slowing down with a solo
ensemble. Again, Mozart follows suit.
Like the Kyrie, the Agnus Dei is a text
involving a three-part prayer. But while
the Kyrie is a prayer of praise, the Agnus
Dei is an appeal for mercy. Mozart sets
the first two invocations of the Agnus
Dei into a long soprano aria, while the
final invocation, ending “Dona nobis
pacem,” (Grant us peace) is an extended
reprise of the music of the Kyrie to unify
the entire mass setting.

RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Dona Nobis Pacem
Ralph Vaughan Williams experienced
the senseless brutality and carnage of
World War I first hand. Although nearly
42, he enlisted and served as a wagon
orderly with the Royal Army Medical
Corps in France and on the Salonika
(Greece) front, later returning to
France as an artillery officer.
In 1936, anguished at the palpable
gathering clouds of another war, he
composed Dona nobis pacem, in which
he combined Latin liturgical material
with biblical texts and modern vernacular poetry. He set to music three of
Walt Whitman’s antiwar poems, an
excerpt from John Bright’s famous
speech to the House of Commons during the Crimean war, (“The Angel of
Death has been throughout the land”),
culminating in a prayer for peace and
brotherhood, and interspersing them
with the invocative refrain “Dona
nobis pacem” by the soprano four
times during the course of the cantata.
The work opens with the soprano and
chorus intoning the Agnus Dei, the final
section of the ordinary of the Catholic
Mass. Vaughan Williams then begins the
series of violent contrasts he will make
throughout the work: gentle pleading,
04-12 DCINY_CH Rental 4/3/15 9:53 AM Page 4
gut-wrenching anguish, portrayal of the
brutality of war, and despair.
Whitman’s grim and powerful “Beat!
Beat! Drums!” follows without pause,
sung by the chorus. Like the drums of
war, this harsh setting cancels out all
other aspects of normal life. Descending
chromatic lines like extended sighs combine with the percussive pounding of
the orchestra.
The contrasting second movement,
Whitman’s “Reconciliation,” for baritone and chorus, is a heart-wrenching
depiction of the impact of war on the
individual—after the all-consuming
drums have fallen silent—centering
around the most moving words “For
my enemy is dead, a man divine as
myself is dead!” There follows again
the soprano’s gentle plea “Dona
nobis pacem.”
The “Dirge for two veterans” is probably Whitman’s most moving and desperate condemnation of war. Although
penned in response to the ravages of
the American Civil War, his lines all too
aptly fitted World War I as well.
Vaughan Williams actually had composed this movement as a separate
work a quarter century earlier but it
had never been published or performed
before its incorporation into Dona
nobis pacem, where it fits all too well
with the looming inevitability of another
war. His emotions are palpable in the
slow funereal march, projecting the
sense of doom.
Bright’s famous speech opens the final
section, declaimed by the baritone over
sparse orchestra. Following these few
lines the invocation is shrieked out by
the chorus and soprano as if in terror.
The compilation of biblical verses beginning with Jeremiah progresses from
despair to a transcendent combined
prayer and statement of faith in the
kingdom of God—perhaps the only true
peace. As if to mirror the renewed sense
of hope, the soprano’s final invocation,
supported by a cappella chorus, is transformed into a gentle uplifting melody.

GUSTAV HOLST St. Paul’s Suite for String Orchestra, Op. 29,
No. 2
Holst completed the St. Paul’s Suite in
1913 in thanks to the St. Paul’s Girls’
School for providing him with a large
soundproof room for his work. This
new studio sported double windows,
two pianos, and central heating!
Tonight’s program features the first
and final movements from this suite.
The first movement begins with a
robust Jig. The final movement,
Dargason is introduced very softly,
then cellos enter playing the beautiful
Greensleeves and the two folksongs
are played together.
—James Rice
JACK JARRETT Serenade for Strings
Meditation is an exceptionally lyrical
work taken from Jarrett’s Serenade for
Strings. The engaging harmonies, slow development, and full breadth of expressive
opportunities allow our orchestra to strive
for the highest levels of musicianship.
—James Rice
04-12 DCINY_CH Rental 4/3/15 9:53 AM Page 5
ERNEST BLOCH Concerto Grosso No. 1, for String
Orchestra with Piano Obbligato
Concerto Grosso No. 1 was composed
during 1925 and 1926 and is scored
for string orchestra with piano obbligato in four movements. The contrasting timbres of the strings and the piano
suggest the Baroque figured bass and
the texture is generally contrapuntal
and actually polytonal. In the Prelude
the melodic material is often short
and motivic. This piece wonderfully
contrasts the Baroque compositional
techniques with the 20th-century
techniques of polytonal clashes and
polymetric shifts.
—James Rice
WILLIAM CHERRY Dedicatory Fanfare
Dedicatory Fanfare by contemporary
composer William Cherry follows the
traditional purpose of this type of composition: to introduce an instrumental
performance. Fanfares are also well
known for their use in military bands in
the United States to announce the
arrival of the president, a general, or
other high-ranking dignitaries. This
particular fanfare is very contemporary
in sound, with rich harmonies, various
styles, and broad melodic lines, yet it
manages to maintain the pomp and circumstance of the traditional fanfare.

TIMOTHY MAHR Endurance
Endurance, by composer Timothy
Mahr (b. 1956 ), is a reflection on the
infinite endurance of the human spirit,
the religious spirit and the spirit of the
earth. Initial inspiration for this work
came from a book of the same title by
Alfred Landsing, documenting the
amazing story of the ill-fated expeditions of the Antarctic explorer Sir
Edward Shackelton in 1914. His ship
the Endurance became ice-bound and
eventually sank, stranding Shackelton
and his crew of 27. They survived for
15 months exposed to the unrelenting,
dangerous Antarctic weather and miraculously lived to tell the tale. The
strength of character by these men in
enduring incredible hardships is truly
awe-inspiring. All three spirits—human,
religious, and earth—are intertwined in
this amazing story of human survival
against all odds.

JULIUS FUCÍK
The Florentiner (“Grande Marcia Italiana”)
Composer Fučík (1872–1917) was
among the brightest jewels in wind
band composers. Anyone associated
with wind band music would have
instant recognition of Fučík and his
particular style. In his short, brilliant
career during which he served as
bandmaster to the 86th Hungarian
Infantry Regiment at Budapest, Fučík
developed his own wide-ranging style
of writing marches. This was a popular dual profession among bandmasters amidst the ongoing nationalism
flourishing in Europe. Thus, it is not
04-12 DCINY_CH Rental 4/3/15 9:53 AM Page 6
surprising to find a Hungarian writing
a grand Italian march and outdoing
many of Italy’s own composers!

RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
I. Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem
(Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world grant us peace)
II. Beat! Beat! Drums!
Beat! beat! drums! – blow! bugles! blow!
Through the windows – through doors – burst like a ruthless force,
Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation,
Into the school where the scholar is studying;
Leave not the bridegroom quiet – no happiness must he have now with his bride,
Nor the peaceful farmer any peace, ploughing his field or gathering his grain,
So fierce you whirr and pound you drums – so shrill you bugles blow.
Beat! beat! drums! – blow! bugles! blow!
Over the traffic of cities – over the rumble of wheels in the streets;
Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? no sleepers must sleep in those beds,
No bargainers bargains by day – no brokers or speculators – would they continue?
Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing?
Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the judge?
Then rattle quicker, heavier drums – you bugles wilder blow.
Beat! beat! drums! – blow! bugles! blow!
Make no parley – stop for no expostulation,
Mind not the timid - mind not the weeper or prayer,
Mind not the old man beseeching the young man,
Let not the child's voice be heard, nor the mother's entreaties,
Make even the trestles to shake the dead where they lie awaiting the hearses,
So strong you thump O terrible drums – so loud you bugles blow. (Walt Whitman)
III. Reconciliation
Word over all, beautiful as the sky,
Beautiful that war and all its deeds of carnage must in time be utterly lost,
That the hands of the sisters Death and Night incessantly softly wash again, and ever
again, this soil'd world:
For my enemy is dead, a man divine as myself is dead,
I look where he lies white-faced and still in the coffin—I draw near,
Bend down and touch lightly with my lips the white face in the coffin. (Walt Whitman)
Dona nobis pacem
IV. Dirge for Two Veterans
The last sunbeam
Lightly falls from the finish'd Sabbath,
On the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking,
Down a new-made double grave.
Lo, the moon ascending,
Up from the east the silvery round moon,
Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon,
Immense and silent moon.
I see a sad procession,
And I hear the sound of coming full-key’d bugles,
04-12 DCINY_CH Rental 4/3/15 9:53 AM Page 9
All the channels of the city streets they are flooding,
As with voices and with tears.
I hear the great drums pounding,
And the small drums steady whirring
And every blow of the great convulsive drums,
Strikes me through and through.
For the son is brought with the father,
In the foremost ranks of the fierce assault they fell,
Two veterans son and father dropt together,
And the double grave awaits them.
And
And
And
And
nearer blow the bugles,
the drums strike more convulsive,
the daylight o'er the pavement quite has faded,
the strong dead-march enwraps me.
In the eastern sky up-buoying,
The sorrowful vast phantom moves illumin'd,
'Tis some mother’s large transparent face,
In heaven brighter growing.
O strong dead-march you please me!
O moon immense with your silvery face you soothe me!
O my soldiers twain! O my veterans passing to burial!
What I have I also give you.
The moon gives you light,
And the bugles and the drums give you music,
And my heart, O my soldiers, my veterans,
My heart gives you love. (Walt Whitman)
V. The Angel of Death
The Angel of Death has been abroad throughout the land; you may almost hear the
beating of his wings. There is no one as of old…to sprinkle with blood the lintel and
the two side-posts of our doors, that he may spare and pass on. (John Bright)
Dona nobis pacem
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan; the whole land trembled at the
sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the
land…and those that dwell therein…
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved…
Is there no balm in Gilead?; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health
of the daughter of my people recovered? (Jeremiah 8:15–22)
VI. O Man Greatly Beloved
O man greatly beloved, fear not, peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. (Daniel 10:19)
The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former…and in this place
will I give peace. (Haggai 2:9)
Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
And none shall make them afraid, neither shall the sword go through their land.
Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
04-12 DCINY_CH Rental 4/3/15 9:53 AM Page 10
Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
Open to me the gates of righteousness, I will go into them.
Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled; and let
them hear and say, it is the truth.
And it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues.
And they shall come and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and they
shall declare my glory among the nations.
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before
me, so shall your seed and your name remain for ever.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good-will toward men. (Adapted
from Micah 4:3, Leviticus 26:6, Psalms 85:10 and 118:19, Isaiah 43:9 and
56:18–22, Luke 2:14)
