KITCHEN TALK
Kolache
In the July and August magazine we requested Kolach recipes. We received a large variety of dough, filling, and topping recipes. We will put
some in this months magazine and some in the November issue. We have put some filling and topping recipes on page 42 of this issue.
Mother's Best Kolache Recipe
Janet Rooks, No. 262, Cedar Rapids, IA
2 C scalded milk
½ C or little more sugar
2tsp salt
1 C butter
2 pkgsyeast
4-6 egg yolks
¼ C lukewarm water
6 C sifted flour
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water with a little sugar added. Set aside.
Cream butter, sugar, and salt. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating
with a mixer. Add scalded milk. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast mixture.
Beat in flour. Set in a warm place to rise until double in bulk. Make
into balls or cut with a glass. Place on greased cookie sheets, 3 inches
apart. Brush with butter. Let rise until light. Fill with filling and let
rise again. Bake at 375° for 10 to 15 minutes.
Kolaches (2 recipes)
Marie Cihal, No. 296, Omaha, NE
1 pkg active dry yeast
1 tsp salt
¼ C warm water
⅛ tsp nutmeg
¾ C warm 2% milk
2 eggs
⅓ C sugar
4 C all purpose flour
⅓ C shortening
Filling
1 can cherry pie filling or solo fillings
3 T butter, melted
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, sugar,
shortening, salt, nutmeg, eggs, and 2 cups flour. Beat until smooth.
Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Knead on floured
board until smooth. Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease the
top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double (about 1 hour).
Divide dough in half, shape each half into 12 balls, place 3 inches
apart on a greased baking sheet. Flaten each ball into 3 inch circles.
Cover and let raise in warm place until double (about 30 minutes).
Make depression in center of each roll. Add filling. Bake at 400° for
15 to 20 minutes. Brush with melted butter. Makes 28-31 depending
upon size.
Kolaches
(Marie Cihal recipe 2--my favorite but had a hard time finding cake yeast)
5 ½ C sifted flour or more
1tsp salt
2 C warm milk
1
small cake fresh yeast
1
whole egg + 3 egg yolks
½ C sugar
½ tspmace
1 T sugar (added to yeast)
¾ C butter or shortening
S ift flour, ½ C sugar, salt, and mace into large mixing bowl, crumble
yeast into warm milk and set aside until yeast rises. Add 1 T sugar
to warm milk and yeast. Melt butter and let cool. When yeast rises
remove it and place yeast into flour mixture. Add egg and yolks to milk
and beat with an egg beater. Add egg/milk mixture to the flour, then
add butter. Mix well, with a spoon for 100 strokes. Dough should be
smooth. Set in a warm place to raise. Bake 15-20 minutes at a 400° oven.

yolks. Sift 4½ cups flour into batter. Mix well until elastic, 3 to 4 minutes.
Add the beaten egg whites, then add gradually 3 cups (plus) flour, as needed.
Dough should not be too soft or stiff, so dough doesn't stick to the sides of
the bowl. Work with greased hands toward last of blending. Knead dough
until it looks smooth. Greasing dough and bowl, let rise until double in
bulk. Cut dough with doughnut cutter with center removed. Let dough rise
to double. Use prune, apricot, or poppyseed filling. Grease before and after
baking with melted butter-flavored Crisco until dough can join 4 corners,
or place dough on sheets until double. Brush with melted shortening and
make a deep hole in center, add the fillings. Bake for 15 minutes or so.

Colorado No. 431, Denver, CO

The Convention was great! In spite of the flights to and
from Cedar Rapids, we can claim it was great. We want to
thank the Home Office for all the good food we had, the
hospitality of the people at the Marriott, and the beautiful
Bohemia Crystal. It will be another Convention we will
remember. The banquet was so beautifully done and a great
band as well. We enjoyed the dancers again and thank Diane
Bradley. She does a terrific job with the young people and it
was obvious they enjoy it also.
Visiting the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library
was very interesting. It was difficult for us to leave there. The
food was also fantastic, and so much of it.
We were sorry to hear of our Director, Brad Evans, is
leaving our district, but at the same time we know his two
small boys and wife, Katrina, will enjoy him being home
and not traveling so much. We wish you all the luck and
happiness Brad, and you are welcome to visit Colorado on a
vacation with your family. Our best wishes to you also, Kitty
Chadima. We will miss you. You tried your best to keep us
on the “straight and narrow.”
I believe the highlight of the Convention was helping with
the food for Kids Against Hunger, filling bags as rapidly as
possible. We were glad to hear our goal was reached. It really
was fun!
It was heartwarming when it was announced Western is
alive and strong due to truth, love, and loyalty. I have several
mementos from my grandparents; the organization now being
118 years old. The flags presented by the American Legion
was also heartwarming. The next Convention (2019) will be
held in WI, so maybe we will go again.
Members at the
August meeting were:
(l-r) Lee Schwarz,
Ruby Henderson,
Rudy Skubal, and
Charles Henderson.
Thank you to the two 75-year members for their kind phone
messages in response to our invitation. We are sorry you
could not come.
A moment of silence was held for our dear, departed sister,
Eileen Severson. She was our president for many years and
a very loyal member. We will miss her. We picked up Thereza
Stephan for the visitation, and brought food and a plant to
the funeral.

Donations were made to the
Boys and Girls Club in Canon
City and PAAV International
Ministries for the school in
Gitombo, Kenya.
Our next meeting was September 5 at Riverpointe. We
voted to help Wanji build the school with another donation.
We joined the Mile-High Group on September 9 to help with
clean-up at Ft. Logan.
We are planning an ethnic lunch in October.

American Genealogy Society to help expand their ancestry
workshop, and three local food pantries (St. Barbra’s,
Stickney, and York Township).
Member brought in items to be donated (food, batteries,
and pill bottles, etc.).
Members are welcome to attend meetings held the second
Thursday of the month at 11:15 a.m. at McCook Restaurant
(8300 Joliet Rd in McCook, IL). We would like to see you
there. Any questions please call Rosemary Davis and leave a

A young group from the
Moravian School in Glendale Heights preformed dances

dancing to the music by several bands. There was catching
up with other organizations and friends. The weather was
nice but kept us guessing with raindrops, but no real rain.

for the service men and women who died in defense of
our country. Magician/member Tim Stolba entertained at
the Get Acquainted party on Thursday evening. Director

of Directors. Marge and Lee Sedlacek, Madeline Trpkosh,
Joe and Betty Konecny, Kae Morgan, Jim and Judy Wolfe,
and Emmy Turkington were greeters and assisted out of
state members with directions. Members from all IA lodges
participated in the service project, Kids Against Hunger.
Members who participated in the Kids Against Hunger found
it a worthwhile project. Marjeanne explained that it was a
wonderful time for members to bond together. It was also
exciting to see young members participate and report on the
Youth Conference. Emmy and Madeline thanked everyone
for paying to attend the Convention.

Jim Wolfe read a letter from Larry Luther who wanted to
get the Cedar Rapids lodges together and do a food packing
for the 2016 JOIN HANDS DAY event. He asked lodges
to contribute $200 each from their treasury for the event, as
well as supply man power. The lodge agreed to participate.
The meeting adjourned followed by our 50/50 drawing;
with half going to the Education and Charitable Foundation
Scholarship fund.
Members reported volunteering 115.5 hours.
A social of wine, beer, and snack foods preceded the
September 8 meeting.
Jim Wolfe called the meeting to order and all stood for

Harvest Festival 2015
Although the weatherman predicted storms for the annual
Czechoslovak Harvest Festival in Bannister on August 2, the
bad weather held off until late evening. This gave us blue
skies and sunshine for the afternoon’s activities. Nearly 1,000
people enjoyed food, music, and dancing at this celebration
that seeks to preserve the old world traditions of harvest
time in Czechoslovakia. A dinner of breaded chicken, ham,
potatoes and gravy, dumplings and cabbage, kolache, and
much more was served in the Bannister ZCBJ Hall.

Following dinner, Program Chairman Tom Bradley
welcomed everyone as the afternoon festivities began.
Children and adults dressed in colorful Czech, Slovak, and
Moravian costumes, marched onto an outdoor platform
carrying flags, banners, baskets of flowers, and decorated
rakes, wreaths, and scythes. The Star Spangled Banner and the
national anthems of the Czech Republic and Slovakia were
led by lodge President Bob Ladiski. A prayer for a successful
harvest was offered by Pastor Kathy Leydorf Keck.

In May, June, and July, we participated in the District,

At our August meeting, we regrouped for the end of the
year, reviewing our progress toward another Level I Award
and expect to attain one.
Greg Konerza and Pamela Kotval represented us at
the National Convention and reported at the August
meeting. They shared key notes from the speaker of the
National Fraternal Alliance, Joe Annotti, who talked
about the challenges and opportunities facing all fraternal
organizations. He stated that we must “embrace the
internet” -- everyone is fully wired and it’s no longer a trend;
millennials communicate differently, and we need a robust
presence to exist. “Don’t swim against the demographic
tide” -- to survive, we must focus on the “boomer” and
“millennial” generations and how they live. We should look
to underserved markets who can benefit from our products
and many fraternal benefits -- single parents, adult caregivers,
parents of the disabled, etc.
On August 29, we planned to volunteer at ResourceWest
in Hopkins to help sort and pack donated school supplies.
We discussed volunteering to work at the Czech and Slovak
Sokol MN Fall Festival in St. Paul September 27. We will hold
a short business meeting later in the afternoon. In October,
we’re planning to bring a fun meeting to Presbyterian Homes
in Minnetonka where a number of our elderly members

hope to be volunteer ushers at the Stages Children’s Theater

Several members came from out of town, and it was great to
see and chat with them. One of our members, Janice Conklin,
is great-niece to Frank Fryzek, the gentleman who painted

We had lots of activity to share our fraternal life. On July
19, over 40 members and guests went to Prague, NE for
our annual pork/duck dinner at the Kolace Korner. It was
a wonderful day because so many of you attended, and it
was just great to see each and every one of you. All the food
tasted “oh so good.” Music was provided by Mark Nemec,
and Adolph Novacek sang the good ole favorite Czech songs.
Erma Ruhl chaired the pork/duck dinner, and presented the
50-year pins to Joann Vilda, Diane Ruhl Good, and Daniel
Ptacek. Jerry Vilda was unable to attend, but we sent a 50-year
pin and duck dinner home with Joann Vilda for Jerry to enjoy.
We thank each of you for attending the dinner and being a
member of our lodge. We invite you to attend our meetings
and bring your ideas as “new is good.” Our President, Denise
Spale, called a short meeting to order.
The National Convention was held in Cedar Rapids, IA
on July 23-25. Members of our lodge who attended were:
Denise Spale, Rich and Sandy Hosek, John Kirby, and
Velma Kotas. The Home Office did a fine job of hosting and
providing information and ideas to better our lodges. One
of the projects was Kids Against Hunger and 250 members
and guests from 69 lodges packaged 30,000 meals in three
hours to feed hungry children around the world and at home.
There was a picture of this project in the Lincoln Journal Star

We thank our members for electing us as delegates. We also
thank all other members from everywhere for attending the
Convention, because one of the highlights for us was seeing
all of you.
Wilber Czech Days were held on July 31-August 2 and

IN MEMORIAM
In Memoriam
They are not gone who pass
beyond the clasp of hand, out
from the strong embrace.
They are but come so close we
need not grope with hands
Nor look to see, nor try to catch
the sound of feet,
They have put off their shoes,
softly to walk by day
Within our thoughts, to tread at
night our dream-led paths
of sleep.
