WHO is British-Resource sheets???
A continuum lineOne end of the line is ‘British’ the other is ‘not British’. Read out the biogs. Ask yp to
stand on the line according to whether or not each is British.
I’m Jess MacDonald.
My Dad works for a company who have factories in lots of countries. My Mum
doesn’t have a job, she looks after me and my brother. Mum and Dad come from
round here, all my Grandparents and aunts and uncles are here in Britain, but I only
ever used to see them at Christmas and things like that. We have a house in
Preston, but we never used it much till now. I was born in Hong Kong, I lived there
for two years then we moved to Australia. I went to school in Australia for a bit and
then when I was seven we moved again to Singapore. In Singapore I went to a
special school for English and American kids.
Now we have come to live in Lancashire- I don’t know how long for. It’s cold here
isn’t it? and people talk funny.
My name is Tomisz. I was born in Morecambe. My Mum and Dad are Polish. They
came here twelve years ago, there weren’t many Polish people here then. My Dad’s
an electrician and my Mum works in an old people’s home. At home we speak
Polish, but I speak English too, just as good as anyone in my school. We go to a
Catholic church and there’s a Polish priest who comes sometimes.
I like Polish stuff and English stuff- like we have great sausages and pickles but I like
burgers and chips as well. I support Man U but I’ve never seen them- it costs too
much- but we go and see Morecambe play, I support them too.
My name is Anjum. I live in Blackburn. My Mum and Dad were both born in
Blackburn too. In my street there’s my family but loads of my cousins live there too.
My Grandparents were born in India, and we still go there sometimes, but it doesn’t
feel like home- it’s really hard to understand what everyone’s saying and everything
is different. Still, it’s nice for a holiday. I’m a Muslim and go to the Mosque near my
house with all my friends. We help each other with homework, learn Arabic and the
Koran. I like going to the cinema and hanging out at the shops., and going to my
friends houses for makeovers and we watch DVDs, play on the wii. When I grow up
I want to be a policewoman.
I’m Christian. I was born here, but my Mum and older sisters weren’t. They came
here from Somalia- they are refugees, they had to come here because of the war. I
never knew him, but my Dad was taken away by soldiers and we never heard of him
again- that’s why we came. So I’ve lived here all my life and been to school here- I’m
just like everyone else really except for my background. Everything’s OK at school,
but I’ve had people threaten me when I’ve been out- just cos I’m black. We do some
African things at home- like food and stuff, and I do feel kind of African. Two years
ago we all got British citizenship at the Town Hall, my Mum’s really pleased about
that. But I felt British anyway.
