ZEUS Group@SGU • Have you used zebrafish (ZF) before in your teaching and will like to continue from where you stopped? • Or would you like to bring your course concepts to the classroom? • Are you interested in learning to adopt the ZF as an model animal for your research questions? • Or have your graduate/medical/veterinary/Biology students evaluate a physiological condition in this vertebrate animal? Then join the ZEUS Group@SGU. About Zebrafish The zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) is a small tropical fish that has become one of the favoured animal model systems for studying gene functioned during embryonic development in that zebrafish embryos are completely transparent making them ideally suited for studying developmental processes as they occur. The same favorable characteristics that have contributed to its popularity as a model of human disease and development; i.e. high fecundity, small size, rapid generation time, optical transparency during early embryogenesis, have also long endeared it to investigators in numerous other disciplines, including animal behavior, fish physiology, and aquatic toxicology. This new model is being used not only for developmental studies but also for drug discovery especially for toxicity and efficacy testing’s in very early stages of the Drug Discovery process. About the ZEUS Group@SGU The ZEUS Group@SGU is a users’ group of membership at SGU whose interest lies in the adoption of the ZF as a teaching model in the demonstration of biomedical concepts as well as animal model in the evaluation of human and animal basic biological and biomedical research. This membership is open to anyone who has genuine interest and motivated to make contributions to the use and care of ZF from all Schools of the University, with occasional consideration for external members from other Institutions and the General Public. The ZEUS Group@SGU is organized and functions as an Academic Professional Group providing opportunities for interchange of information and knowledge, and allow professionals to solve doubts on these teleostei. Group Membership will: 1. Provide you with exclusive access to a Zebrafish colony available for members ONLY and expand your knowledge and your horizons with members-only resources 2. provide you and your undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience in the care and use of these animals with a comprehensive overview of the basic operating and design principles of zebrafish management system 3. Enable you plan the development of new Elective/Selective courses for both Graduate and Undergraduate programs where students become exposed to utilizing the zebrafish as an animal model for a variety of projects that can be accomplished within the limited period of study available to them, yet of a very high quality in understanding basic medical sciences. 4. Offer you opportunities for networking and collaborations within and with external linkages of the group 5. Enable you gain expert support to help you with your teaching, research and your career. 6. Afford you the chance to share your perspective and make a difference 7. Be foundation to support with the construction of new facilities and/or the upgrade and maintenance of existing operations. Activities of the Group will include but not limited to: Publications Invited Seminars Journal Club Projects External presentations Public Outreaches All use and care of the ZF colony is regulated by SGU IACUC and maintained in the Aquatic Animal Medicine Research Laboratory, directed by Dr. FA Fakoya, Department of Anatomical Sciences, SOM and managed by Dr. Ross Peterson, Department of Small Animal medicine, SVM. Animal husbandry is provided by a Lab technician How to join To request membership, complete the attached form and mail back to [email protected]. Your request will be reviewed by the Group leader.
