Ward Foundation News p~QpERTV OF ~.rr Vol. I Number 1 ~ WAHU Summer 1985 . MUO~UWI ~ Youth Movement Marks ‘85 World Championship A new generation of wildfowl artists seems to be making itself known, at least as far as results in the 1985 Ward Foundation World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition might indicate. Top winners in the 1985 World, held April 26-28 in Ocean City, MD, showed a definite youth movement, with 27-year-old Larry Barth of Stahlstown, PAwinning the $20,000 purchase award in Decorative Lifesize, and Jett Brunet of Galliano, LA winning in Competition Grade Floating Waterfowl. Jett, 20, son of five-time World Champion Tan Brunet, won the $10,000 purchase award with his pair of ruddy ducks. Gary Yoder, who won the $7500 * Larry Barth’s “~~iter Lali Snowy Owl and Bonaparte’s winner of the 1985 Decorative Lifesize competi tion. Approximately 10,000 visitors attended The World Championships in Ocean City in April. ~. ____ w j~ - _ _ ~ve ~— 1~j~j~m~ ~ purchase award in Decorative Miniatures, is likewise not exactly a grizzled veteran, despite his growing collection of blue ribbons. Gary is a 25-year-old carver from Grantsville, MD. It was one of the most sucessful World Championships ever, both in the quality of work displayed and in the number of visitors who came to admire the art. An estimated 10,000 persons attended the annual competition. According to Knute Bartrug, who has been chairman of the event for 15 years, 797 carvers entered 2444 works in the competition. Bartrug said entrants included 217 professionals with 797 carvings, 219 amateurs with 730 pieces, and 361 novices entering 917 works. Bartrug said the theme for the 1986 Decorative Lifesize and Decorative Miniatures competition will be Seabirds. The theme for Floating Pairs competition will be Cinnamon Teal. The 1986 World Championships will be held in Ocean City on April 25-27. Photos of the winning World Class pieces will be featured in the Summer issue of the Ward Foundation’s Wildfowl Art Journal, which will be published in mid-July. The Summer issue will also include a feature story on Larry Barth, and a special color step-by-step section on how Larry created his winning carving, “Winter Lakeshore Snowy Owl and Bonaparte’s Gull.” Future issues of the magazine will include stories on Jett Brunet and Gary Yoder. Here is a complete list of the winners in all categories of the 1985 / Ward Foundation World Champion / ship Wildfowl Carving Competition: - - 4~ ~_ ~ ~ ~ ~ ...: .• .:~. ~ — - k ~ 1 (continued on page 5) (continued from page 1) Director’s Report With the printing of the last issue of the “Ward Foundation’s Magazine, the Ward Foundation News” has taken on a new format. Actually the Foundation is expanding its services to the membership. The Ward Foundation News which started out as a newspaper seven years ago is now returning to its newspaper format. This is the first issue of the new or should I say old Ward Foundation News. The “News” will be printed four times a year. This will enable all of the many wildfowl art lovers to stay on top of the many activities that are now occurring throughout the United States. It seems appropriate that the winners of the World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition are listed in this edition. If any of you have any news worthy items about your carving club, the latest Wildfowl Art Show or contests please send this information to us. We can probably use it in the newsletter. The magazine now has a new name and format. “The Wildfowl Art Journal” now has a staff of columnists writing on a regular basis. With our new format we should also be able to provide our readers with more in depth feature articles about the top bird carvers working today, the latest information on decoys, bird carving history and technical information on bird carving. The Ward Foundation was established in 1968 to promote North American Wildfowl Art and to establish exhibition halls of wildfowl art. With the addition of the new newsletter I hope we have taken one more step toward achieving the Foundation’s goals. Kenneth A. Basile Director North American Wildfowl Art Museum Don’t Miss An Issue! ~ Beginning with the Spring Issue the Ward Foundation’s quarterly magazine took on a new look: More color...More pages...More columns and stories about carvers and carving...Even a new name! This summer we’re planning our biggest issue yet, featuring World Champion Larry Barth with a full-color, step-by-step photo feature on how he created “Winter Lakeshore-Snowy Owl and Bonaparte’s Gull,” winner of the 1985 Decorative Lifesize competition at the World Championships in Ocean City in April. We’ll also have stories on carver Mark McNair, Hy Dahika, English pigeon decoys, as well as regular features by George Reiger, Henry Fleckenstein, Jim Sprankle, and Dan Brown. Look for us in late July in your favorite mailbox! 4 1985 Carving Competition Winners Ocean City, MD, April 26-28, 1985 World Championship Class Decorative Life-size Wildfowl Carvings BEST IN WORLD Larry Barth, Stahistown, PA, Snowy Owl & Bonaparte’s Gull, $20,000 (purchase award) SECOND IN WORLD A.J.
