During the cold winter months, warm, rustic huts thaw satisfied, yet cold visitors who have enjoyed the snowy outdoor magic, such as that found within the Northern Lights. Spring and summer reveal the beauty and life that was hidden by winter hibernation and, in Yukon, has awoken to a 24-hour daily cycle of sunlight. Travel to Alaska provides limitless opportunities for exploration and encounters with natural wonders during anytime of year. Yukon While in northern Alaska, cross the Yukon River into Canada to enjoy the simple beauty of Yukon. This area, which is also famous for its proximity to the GoldRush era town of Dawson, boasts natural wonders not found in many other areas of the world. During the winter, see the amber, green, blue and violet hues of the Northern Lights, which illuminate the sky. For an extraordinary experience, sit fireside while eating camp-style snacks during the wait for the perfect Aurora-Borealis viewing. Summer brings with it a distinctively different natural wonder that illuminates the sky. As summer thaws the snow and ice, it also brings with it the Midnight Sun season. On the summer solstice — June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere — enjoy 24 hours of sunlight. Though this is the only day for a complete, full 24 hours of sunshine, those leading up to and following June 21 afford opportunities for sunlight well into the night. Skagway The small Alaska town of Skagway is inhabited by only 1,000 people and located at the northernmost area within the Inside Passage. Retaining the atmosphere of a century ago, the town’s wooden boardwalks and buildings introduce visitors to the simple respite of life in this area of Alaska. Though the town might be small, its attractions are mighty. A haven for talented chefs and creative artists, the area takes pride in its offerings. In addition to its quaint small-town atmosphere, Skagway is surrounded by natural attractions and historic sites that reveal the experiences by Native Americans and explorers who settled in the area. Once occupied by the Tlingit during the summer, Dyea is a serene destination with lovely landscapes. During the gold rush, the area was filled with curious visitors seeking fortune, but in the late 19th century an avalanche demolished the town. Dyea is now a popular recreation area for locals and tourists. Juneau Named after prospector Joe Juneau, Alaska’s capital was a destination for gold seekers in the late 1800s. As the first town founded after the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, Juneau was the optimal starting point for settlers to find a fresh, new life to make their own. spring 2017 The city remains a vibrant center for commerce and starting point for Alaskan adventure. With a culture that blends the American spirit of exploration and respect for nature found in Native values, Juneau offers opportunities for an array of experiences. Plan a day to explore the city’s arts scene by taking in a performance at Perseverance Theatre, shopping for Native jewelry and dining at local favorites Salt, Alaskan Brewing Company and Hangar on the Wharf. Explore the natural side of Juneau and set off for kayaking, hiking, rafting, skiing, or snowboarding — depending on the season. While moving through the wilderness, watch for black bear, bald eagles, humpback whales, harbor seals, sea otters, mountain goats, Dall’s porpoise and Sitka black tail deer. Ketchikan Tracing its history back to the commercial fishing industry, Ketchikan was once a wild town known to host fishermen who sought king salmon and lascivious indulgences. These days, the familyfriendly town invites tourists to the area with a boardwalk that is now occupied by restaurants, museums and galleries. The Totem Heritage Center reveals the world’s largest totem pole collection. Moved from the Tlingit and Haida villages, the 33 poles are not all available for viewing, however half the collection is displayed and accompanied by historical photographs that reveal the traditions of old villages. Visitors to the area can also hire a seaplane to travel over Misty Fjords for an incredible view of the fjords. Completely frozen 17,000 years ago, shifting ice has carved the fjords over time. Explore Alaska any season of the year and discover one of the most extraordinary destinations for natural attractions and quaint, small towns. Globus offers tours to the region, while cruise lines including Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Seabourn afford incredible sailing itineraries. 3 SPRING C O N C E RT H A LLS Sydney Opera House Lincoln Center Sala, São Paolo – © Júlio Boaro Around the world, concert halls and opera houses serve as direct links to the history, arts influence and culture of the cities in which they are found. SYMPHONY HALL, BOSTON The heritage of Boston is rich in American history as the heart of early New England. Remaining a center of business, culture and education, Boston affords a link to the earliest days of American colonial history. One of the most brightly shining examples of Boston culture is the city’s Symphony Hall. Opened in October 1900, this second home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (the first being Old Boston Music Hall) was designed by architects McKim, Mead & White with the assistance of Harvard assistant professor of physics Wallace Clement Sabine, who served as an acoustics advisor to produce a space that maximized sound quality. SALA, SÃO PAOLO Brazil’s cities are known for their old buildings that have withstood financial and cultural disruptions over the years. Blending a mixture of detailed late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture with fine craftsmanship that has allowed the buildings to survive, many of the sites have been renovated and repurposed to afford glimpses of the past while promoting visions of the future. This has been the storied history of Sala São Paulo, located in São Paulo. Built between 1926 and 1938 as the Julio Prestes Station, the site once served the Sorocabana Railway. In 1995, plans for renovating the station as a concert hall began. Now the home of Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, the building retains many of the features from its original early 20th-century grandeur, such as original designs for mirrors and handles installed on the doors, many of which are the original pieces. In addition to this company, the hall has hosted performances by the Postdam Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and YOA Orchestra of the Americas. The space is also available for private affairs, one of which was a 2009 Elton John performance hosted by Cruzeiro do Sul Investments Bank. THEATRE ANTIQUE d’ORANGE, CÔTE d'AZUR The theatre’s caretakers limit events that are hosted in the space to summer festivals and tours. Preservation has been a priority of the space, and in 1981 the theatre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided tours of the site are offered during the summer season, July through August. In addition to these tours, every Tuesday and Thursday night in August affords the opportunity to explore the illuminated theatre until 10:30 p.m., while led through the space by guides who assume the roles of Roman-era figures. From June 19 until August 6, Theatre Antique d’Orange hosts its most anticipated event of the year, The Chorégies. Dating back to 1860, this festival – the oldest in France – hosts a fascinating array of events that fill the space suitable for nine thousand visitors. This unique experience offers performances of Verdi’s “Aïda,” the film adaptation of “The Phantom of the Opera” accompanied by live music, and Beethoven’s “9th Symphony,” in addition to the opening event “Musiques en Fête, Live from Chorégies d’Orange,” which will take place on the evening of June 19. THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON The grounds that once comprised the Gore estate, which included Gore House, were occupied by The Royal Albert Hall political reformer William Wilberforce during the early 1800s and the Countess of Blessington and Count D’Orsay in the middle of the century. Following the couple’s departure in 1851, the grounds were transformed into an Alexis Soyer restaurant, and subsequently a cultural quarter commissioned by Prince Albert, which was known as Albertopolis. In 1867, Queen Victoria joined seven thousand people in London as she laid the foundation stone for the hall and declared “It is my wish that this Hall should bear his name to whom it will have owed its existence and be called The Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences.” Through the years, the site has provided education and outreach for adults, children and schools. Royal Albert Hall has also hosted extraordinary musical guests since its inception. On the bill this year are The Pretenders, Rick Astley, The Gipsy Kings, Adam Ant, The Beach Boys, Phil Collins, Idina Menzel, Little Big Town, Diana Krall and, yes, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. When planning your next vacation to one of the world’s historic cities, your travel professional can plan a tour that includes an excursion to one of these extraordinary spaces. Trafalgar, Globus and Gate1 Travel offer comprehensive tours to cities throughout Europe, South America and the United States. Whether part of the original itinerary or added as an extension before, or after your tour, visiting these halls will create unique, authentic experiences and vivid memories. 56 N. A major draw of the celebration is free admission throughout 2017 to Canada’s national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas operated by Parks Canada. Many specially planned activities will also highlight this year’s park visits, including hiking and paddling expeditions, as well as informative talks on history, archaeology and indigenous cultures. Much of Canada’s wilderness remains pristine and offers wonderful opportunities for exploration, from Quebec and Ontario on the Atlantic Coast to the Canadian Prairies and Western Canada. Here are a few outstanding parks outlined by region. Jamaica THE CANADIAN ROCKIES Few places on earth rival the pristine natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies, where wintry scenes of majestic snow-covered mountains transform into rushing streams, fertile forests and vast fields of alpine wildflowers upon the arrival of spring and summer. Clear skies, glacial fields and waterfalls, deep blue lakes as clear as crystal – these are the images of a wilderness that offers complete escape from the hectic modern world. Escorted motor coach tours are a popular way to see the Canadian Rockies, showing visitors some of the most scenic highlights, including the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield and hot springs in Jasper, and Banff, wherein lies beautiful Lake Louise and the famous Banff Springs Hotel. In this region, visitors can expect to see many speicies of wildlife, including elk, mountain goats, bighorn sheep and moose. Keep an eye out for moose and bald eagles. You might even catch sight of a minke or pilot whale breaking waves in the Atlantic or Gulf of St. Lawrence. And you’re never far from a steaming plate of local lobster fresh from the ocean. 6 Cape Forchu Lighthouse , Nova Scotia Highlands visitors also enjoy many nearby sites of historical interest, including the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, Prince Edward Island National Park, and Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy is one of the seven wonders of North America. The highest tides on earth, the rarest whales in the world, semi-precious minerals and dinosaur fossils; all this convinced an international panel of experts in 2014 to choose the Bay of Fundy as one of the natural wonders of the world. The Bay of Fundy has a diverse coastal landscape of breathtaking cliffs, sea caves and rock formations. Fundy’s geological diversity tells a story of millions of years of natural history with Triassic age dinosaur discoveries, fossils showing evidence of the evolution of life, and semi-precious gems and minerals. The tides of the bay create unique conditions for whales and seabirds. Visitors can enjoy sea kayaking along sculpted coastlines, cliffs and islands, as well as hiking trails, boat tours and tidal rafting expeditions. Rafting in the Canadian Rockies ONTARIO Ontario’s Thousand Islands constitute an archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada-U.S. border.
