Serving as your 2-1-1 Center for Central Indiana Despite High Ranking, Poverty Exists in Hendricks County Hendricks County residents can take pride in the fact that they live in the 5th healthiest county in Indiana, according to the most recently released data (April 2012) from the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps project (www.countyhealthrankings.org). The project, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, ranks nearly every county in the nation on a vast array of health, economic, demographic and social factors to create a composite health ranking for each county. Hendricks County Indiana Median household income factors into Hendricks County Population (2010, US Census Bureau) County’s high ranking; its 2010 median income of 145,448 6,483,802 $66,080 (US Census Bureau) is the 2nd highest in 2012 County Health Ranking (out of 92 Indiana counties) 5 the state. (Indiana’s 2010 median income is County Poverty Rate (2010, US Census Bureau) 6.4% 15.3% $44,616). Despite the fact that the vast majority of Avg. # Monthly Food Stamps Recipients (2011, FSSA) its residents are not faced with it on a daily basis, 6,817 884,135 poverty still exists in the county. Poverty Free/Reduced Lunch Recipients (2011 Kids Count Data) 6,305 489,137 thresholds are determined by the U.S. Department Number Uninsured (2012 County Health Ranking) 14,240 882,602 of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, and vary based on the number of people in the household. The threshold for a single person is $11,491; the threshold for a typical family of 4 is $23,018. According to 2010 US Census Bureau data, 6.4% of Hendricks County residents are poor; this percentage represents more than 9,000 people, almost 3,200 of whom are children. (The poverty rate for children under 18 is 8.0%, compared to a state rate of 21.6%). Connect2Help 2‐1‐1 (C2H) receives calls for help from Hendricks County residents on a daily basis. During the last 12 months, April 2011‐March 2012, C2H connected nearly 2,700 callers with more than 5,300 community resources to help them meet their needs. The vast majority (93%) of the callers lived in 4 Hendricks County cities: Plainfield (46168 – 34%), Avon (46123 – 26%), Brownsburg (46112 – 21%) and Danville (46122 ‐ 12%). Hendricks County callers’ top 3 needs, which accounted for 40% of all requests, were Housing, Utilities and Health. Within the Housing category, the top 3 needs were rent assistance, shelter and low‐cost housing. The top Utilities needs included electric, gas and water bill assistance. Finally, the top Health needs were community clinics, inpatient healthcare and dental care. Seven percent (7%) of Hendricks County callers’ needs were recorded as “unmet.” The top unmet needs were nearly the same as the presenting needs of Hendricks County callers: Utilities (18%), Housing (18%) and Holiday Assistance (18%). The top unmet Utilities needs included electric and gas bill assistance; top unmet Housing needs were shelter and rent assistance; and top unmet Holiday needs were holiday gifts/toys and Thanksgiving baskets. While the general “health” of Hendricks County is very good, thousands of residents are still struggling for survival.
