Wage and hour litigation has been on the rise for years resulting in millions of
dollars in penalties and settlements for companies. The Department of Labor
(DOL) has hired hundreds of new employees to pursue
government investigations and the surge in litigation (most
of which is class/collective actions) has not shown any sign
of slowing down. The DOL has also announced a change to
the "white collar" exemptions that could result in tens of
thousands of employees losing their exempt status. Come
learn about the challenges employers are facing on the
wage and hour front and steps you should take to protect
your company.

Dear SHRMJC Members,
Let’s begin 2016 by thanking the 2015 SHRMJC Board of
Directors and the President, Matt Smith, for all of their efforts and accomplishments in 2015!
As we began preparing for 2016 and the challenges ahead, approximately 850
SHRM Leaders came together at the National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C, in November. Hank Jackson, SHRM President and CEO, shared
some interesting statistics in his opening comments. It went something like
this, as a SHRM member you are one of 285,000 Human Resources Professionals, you work for one of the 100,000 organizations with a SHRM member
on staff, and you live in one of the 55 countries represented by the membership. In addition, 70,000 professionals have completed the new Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certifications.
In the midst of Hank’s speech I realized, 2016 will be my 30th year in the People Business, HR, and working as a human resources professional. I am fortunate to share this year with my colleagues and friends at SHRMJC. Since that
day, I have been thinking about why I have been a part of the People Business, HR, and why I continue to be a SHRMJC volunteer. It is clear to me;
the people and the SHRMJC members are what it is all about. The SHRMJC
members are extraordinary people. Members come from every imaginable
industry. We come together for camaraderie and continuous learning opportunities to ensure we are the best we can be. This empowers members to
lead the People Business, HR, at their respective employers day after day and
year after year.
This year, I am inviting everyone who attends one of our monthly meetings
and our social events to meet and build relationships with the people of
SHRMJC. Break out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to meet at
least three new people at every event. Maybe, even sit in a different part of
the room every time you attend an event. Just think by December 2016, you
will have added at least twenty-seven more fabulous people to your network.
Overachievers, you can add 30!
Thank you for your on-going support of SHRMJC!

Workforce Readiness Committee Update: So You Think You’re Ready?
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR ANNUAL
BUSINESS PARTNERS
Welcome 2016, and welcome to a new opportunity to fulfill a New Year's resolution to help others! The Workforce Readiness committee has created "So
You Think You're Ready" where we are offering our seasoned HR advice to
those individuals who are in job transition---either because they are not
working and are conducting a serious job search, or are just thinking about looking to see what else could be out
there for them to jump to during this new year.
We offer resume and cover letter review and feedback, interview prep (such as how to answer those difficult
questions, what to wear, what not to do such as checking messages on your phone....) and can even be ready to
just listen to the challenges the job seeker is experiencing and be a sounding board.
Whether you would like to volunteer your time to help others, or you are one you finds yourself in need of this
assistance, please email us at [email protected] to get started.
We encourage you to give it a try!
Your Workforce Readiness committee
Thank You to our Annual Business Partners!
