4th Grade Science 3rd Nine Weeks Group 3

TEKS Based Lesson Plan
Subject: 4th Grade Science
Weeks: 3rd Nine Weeks Group 3
Unit of Study: Adaptations of Organisms
Essential Questions:
1. How to animals adapt in their environment?
2. What is a physical adaptation?
3. What is a behavior adaptation?
TEKS/Essence Statements:
4.10A explore how ADAPTATIONS enable organisms to survive in their environment such as comparing
birds' beaks and leaves on plants
Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals:
This section needs to be completed based on the students in your class.
Instruction/Classroom Activities:
Small Group Instruction
•
Show the students the following power point on adaptations: http://animals.pppst.com/adaptations.html
•
Tell the students that they are going to learn about camouflage. The teacher will show different
pictures of animals and tell the students how they use color to protect themselves. For instance,
Walking sticks, with their dark skinny bodies and swollen joints, escape predators due to their
resemblance to twigs. Other animals change their appearance as their surroundings change: An
octopus can change the color and texture of its skin quickly in order to hide in the changing terrain
of the ocean floor. An Arctic fox will change the color of its fur based on the seasons. In the
warmer months, the Arctic fox will grow brown fur to hide in the trees, and in the winter, it will
grow white fur to hide in the snow.
•
Take your class to a grassy area and show them 30 color paper clips. Which color will be easiest to
see in the grass? Which will be hardest? Have students make their predictions. Have students
record their findings. Discuss the results and relate this to how animals camouflage themselves.
Stations/Centers:
• Fine motor activity: Different containers that have plastic animals or bugs hidden in them. For
example, hide brown plastic animals or bugs in soil. Hide green animals or bugs in the grass.
• Art activity: Have the student decorate a polar bear with cotton to represent its white fur. Paste the
polar bear on a piece of white construction paper.
• Reading activity: Get books from the library about camouflage and have the students read it or look at
the pictures.
• Computer activity: Student will watch the following KLRN United Video streaming:
Individualized Communication Planning: This section needs to be completed based on the
individualized communication needs of the students in your class.
