Here are some practical activity ideas which complement the activities available on the Sali Mali 123 CD-ROM. Sali Mali’s Cake Aim: Practicing drawing numbers while decorating Jac y Jwc’s birthday cake. Apparatus: laminated number cards dough sand large paint brushes Activity 1: The teacher to make number cards and laminate them. The children can then practice drawing a number by following the arrows on the number with a finger or by creating the number with dough. Activity 2: Birthday cakes can be made from wet sand and numbers can be drawn on the different cakes. Activity 3: Guessing the number by placing a laminated number in a bag and feeling the shape of the number. Outdoor Activity: Creating mud cakes and drawing numbers on each of the cakes. or Practice drawing numbers correctly by using large paint brushes and water. 1. Sausages Game Aim: Reinforcing the understanding of numbers 1-5, 5-10, adding and subtracting. Apparatus: coloured plastic plates laminated pictures of sausages or sausages made from dough numbered Cards 1-5, 5-10 Activity 1: Placing sausages on a plate and counting them. The teacher to ask: How many sausages are here? The pupil to try and place the corresponding number of sausages on the plate. Activity 2: The teacher to select a number card and place the corresponding number of sausages on the plate. Do the same again by using two plates. How many sausages are on the red plate? How many sausages are on the blue plate? How many sausages are there altogether? Extended Activity: Introducing the concept of subtracting by singing the following number rhyme to the tune of ‘Ten Green Bottles’: 5 greasy sausages on a plate for Jac y Jwc, 5 greasy sausages on a plate for Jac y Jwc, And if one greasy sausage Should fall straight to the floor, Only 4 greasy sausages Are left for Jac y Jwc. Four greasy sausages on a plate … Three greasy sausages on a plate … Two greasy sausages on a plate … One greasy sausage on a plate … And if one greasy sausage Should fall straight to the floor, There would be no greasy sausages Left for Jac y Jwc. 2. Party Bags Aim: Following instructions and counting to 5. Apparatus: party goods e.g. balloons, hats, sweets and party bag gifts bag tray Activity 1: Children to follow instructions. Place 3 balloons in the bag. Place 5 sweets in the bag. Place 2 gifts in the bag. Activity 2: Placing objects in a bag and asking the pupils to guess how many items are in the bag through touch. The activity can be extended by asking questions e.g. Are there more than 3? Are there more than 5? Are there less than 7? Activity 3: Placing several objects on a tray and asking the children to close their eyes while the adult adds or removes something from the tray. After the children open their eyes ask if there are more or less items now? Activity 4: Making a party bag for all the characters attending Jac y Jwc’s party and sharing the objects evenly between the bags. Ask questions such as: Are there enough hats for everyone? Are there too many balloons? How many are left? 3. Shopping for a gift Aim: Becoming familiar with the numbers 1-10. Apparatus: box or tin shaped as a hexagon (similar to a biscuit or sweet tin) and wrapped with paper or colourful fabric clothes pegs washing line teddies plastic cups numbered between 1-5/5-10 pictures of numbered gifts party gifts plastic buckets small balls/bean bags Activity 1: Placing numbers from 1-6 or dots from 1-6 around the box and asking the children to place the corresponding number of pegs in the box e.g. 3 pegs above the number 3 card. or Pointing at a card and placing the corresponding number of teddies in the box. Activity 2: Using plastic cups numbered from 1-5/5-10. Pegging the corresponding number of pegs on each cup and then placing little gifts in each of the cups to correspond with the number on each of the cups. Activity 3: Placing pictures of numbered gifts in order on a washing line. Outdoor Activity: Placing 5 or 10 plastic buckets here and there on the yard (or mark circles on the yard). Then number every bucket (or circle). The children must throw a ball or a bean bag to the buckets in the correct order. Then place the buckets in order and throw a bean bag or ball into the buckets in the correct order. or Collecting several items from the yard and placing them in the appropriate bucket e.g. 6 small stones in the number 6 bucket, in order. 4. Money Aim: Becoming familiar with money. Apparatus: role-play shop plastic money/coins Activity 1: Labelling prices in the role play shop. Buy something for the party that costs 3p. Buy something for the party that costs more than 5p. Buy something for the party that costs less than 10p. Activity 2: Paying for items for the party by matching the money to the price on the label e.g. 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p. Activity 3: Making a big counting book 1-5/5-10 - Jac y Jwc’s Birthday Party. Activity 4: Paying for items by counting the correct number of coins. 5.
