Dear St. Ambrose parishioners,
It is with mixed emotions that I announce that our personnel board and Bishop Paprocki have asked
me to consider a new assignment. I had anticipated this the past two years, since Bishop Paprocki has
stated that after a priest has been at a Parish for 12 years, he can ask any priest in that category to take
on a new assignment. This July 1st, I will have completed my 13th year as your pastor. And how blessed
I have been to shepherd this faith community of St. Ambrose here in Godfrey for this long time. St.
Ambrose Parish Family, beautiful faith filled people, a great staff, very nice facilities, a good location
for me personally! I will leave here with a bale of fond memories and dear friendships. For us priests, it
is never easy to move and begin a new assignment, and the older you are, the more difficult it becomes,
I am most grateful that I will not be too far away. I will be serving as the new pastor of 4 parishes: Holy
Ghost and St. Francis Xavier parishes in Jerseyville, St. Patrick’s in Grafton and St. Mary's in Fieldon.
The young priest with whom I will share ministry with at those parishes, Fr. Marty Smith, ordained
two years, it just happens that I was his family’s pastor at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit in Mt. Zion, Illinois from 1987-1991, and I gave Fr. Marty his first communion! I am delighted to have the opportunity
to mentor a young priest, as I have done with Deacon Bill, Tom and Jay.
The priest shortage is terrible for the universal Catholic Church, for our local diocese and for our
priests. Some of our priests have been asked to take on new assignments after having only served in
their current assignments for 3 and 4 years. This summer 3 of our pastors are retiring, one died suddenly, Fr. Bill Hembrow who had been in Jerseyville, and one priest having suffered a heart attack will
be moving to a smaller parish with less work and stress. This is what creates what we call the DOMINO
AFFECT, NECESSITATING MANY PRIEST TO MOVE TO NEW PARISH ASSIGNMENTS THIS
JULY 1st.
I am thrilled that your future pastor, Fr. Steve Janoski, one year older than me, he is 60, will be following me. I would say Steve is one of the most talented priests in our diocese and he grew up in St. Louis
and has two sisters still in the St. Louis area. We have been good friends for the past 39 years, St.
Ambrose will be in the best of pastoral hands under his leadership.
As I reflect back over the past 13 years, I have done my best to minister to you like my own family, and
I feel like I have made a positive difference in your spiritual lives, in your faith journeys. I have tried to
engender a warm sense of community here at St. Ambrose, and I know Fr. Steve Janoski will carry on
in this same spirit.
In Christ’s love,
Fr. Steve
