Getting started
About Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones
You can use Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones to update your friends about what you are doing from almost anywhere
you go. You can post a tweet, send messages to friends, search Twitter, add pictures to your tweets, and more.
If you already have a Twitter account, you can use your existing login information to log in to Twitter for BlackBerry
smartphones. To get a Twitter account, sign up using Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones or visit www.twitter.com.
What's new in Twitter for BlackBerry
smartphones 5.0
The new features and enhancements for Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 5.0 include the following items:

Messages tab: Compose, view, and reply to direct messages on the Messages tab.

Images: Attach images to messages.
Reporting feature: Report messages as spam, abusive, or compromised.
Drafts feature: Save draft tweets and access them later.
Notifications tab: View the latest updates on the Notifications tab.
Get a temporary password for login
verification
You can use login verification to help increase the security of your Twitter account. Instead of your usual username and
password, a temporary password is required to log in to Twitter on your BlackBerry smartphone. Temporary passwords
expire after one hour.
On your computer, enable login verification at https://twitter.com/settings/security.
1.
From a browser, log in to your Twitter account.
2.
In the Settings and help drop-down menu, click Settings > Password.
3.
Click Generate and follow the instructions on the screen.
The temporary password is sent to your smartphone in a text message.

Use the temporary password to log in to the Twitter app on your smartphone.

Switch Twitter accounts
If you have more than one Twitter account, you can easily switch between your accounts.
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Me icon.
2.
Click the Switch Account icon.
3.
Click a Twitter account.
View trending topics
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Discover icon.
2.
To view trending topics from a specific location, click View all trends.
3.
Click the Worldwide drop-down list.
Change your display options
1.
Press the Menu key > Settings.
2.
Do any of the following:

To change the font type and size, clear the Use system font settings checkbox. Change the Font family and Font
size fields.
•
To change the appearance of the direct messages screen, beside Show messages as, click the drop-down list.
•
To hide the Add Location button on the Twitter home screen, clear the Add location to tweet checkbox.
•
To show or hide the tweet field on the Twitter home screen, click Manage Accounts. Click your account. Click
Account Options. Select or clear the Add location to tweet checkbox.
•
To show or hide images in your tweet timeline, select or clear the Image preview checkbox.
Press the Menu key > Save.
Connect Twitter for BlackBerry
smartphones with BBM
When you connect your Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones app with BlackBerry Messenger, you can set a tweet as your
BBM personal message.

Tweets and messages
Post a tweet
If your BlackBerry smartphone supports GPS technology, you can add your location to tweets that you post.
1.
On the Twitter home screen, click Compose Tweet.
2.
Type a tweet.
3.

To add your GPS location to your tweet, click Add Location.
•
To add a picture to your tweet, click the Add Photo icon.
•
To set your tweet as your BBM personal message, click the Update BBM personal message icon.
Click Tweet.
Reply to a tweet
1.
Highlight a tweet.
2.
Press the Menu key.
•
To reply to the person that posted the tweet, click Reply.
•
To reply to all of the people that are mentioned in the tweet, click Reply All.
3.
Type a tweet.
4.
Click Reply.
Retweet
1.
Highlight a tweet.
2.
Press the Menu key.
•
To retweet the original tweet as it originally appeared, click Retweet.
•
To edit the original tweet before you post it, click Quote Tweet. Edit the tweet. Click Tweet.
Note: A corner icon on the top-right corner of the tweet shows that you retweeted it.
To undo the retweet, highlight the tweet. Press the Menu key > Undo Retweet.

Add a link to a tweet or message
When you add a link to a tweet or message, the link is shortened automatically.
1.
While browsing the Internet from your BlackBerry smartphone, on a webpage, press the Menu key.
2.
Click Send Page Address > Twitter.
3.
Click Message or Tweet.
4.
Type a tweet.
5.
Click Update.
Post a tweet on a trending topic
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Discover icon.
2.
Highlight a topic.
3.
Press the Menu key > Compose Tweet.
4.
Type a tweet.
5.
Click Tweet.
Share a tweet
1.
Highlight a tweet.
2.
Press the Menu key.
3.
Click Share.

Set a tweet as your Facebook status
To perform this task, you must have Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones installed and activated on your smartphone.

Mark a tweet as a favorite
1.
Highlight a tweet.

Press the Menu key.

Click Favorite.
Note: A corner icon on the top-right corner of the tweet shows that you favorited it.
To view your favorite tweets, click the Me icon > Favorites.
Save an image
1.
Click an image to open it.
2.
Press the Menu key > Save Image.
3.
Click Save.
View a draft tweet
If you cancel the Compose screen before posting a tweet, or if you lose your network connection while composing a tweet,
you are prompted to save a draft of your tweet that you can view later.
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Me icon.
2.
Click Drafts.
3.
Do any of the following:
•
To edit a draft tweet, highlight the tweet and press the Menu key > Edit.
•
To delete a draft tweet, highlight the tweet and press the Menu key > Delete.
•
To post a draft tweet, highlight the tweet and press the Menu key > Send.
Note: Draft tweets are deleted when you sign out of Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones.
Send a message
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Messages icon.
2.
Press the Menu key > Compose Message.
3.
Type part of a person's name or Twitter username.

Report a tweet or message as spam
When you report a tweet as spam, the person who posted the tweet is blocked from your timeline. When you report a
message as spam, the message is permanently deleted, but the person who sent you the message is not blocked.
1.
Open a tweet or message.
2.
Press the Menu key.
3.
Do one of the following:
•
To report a tweet as spam, click Report Spam > Continue.
•
To report a message as spam, abusive, or compromised, click Report Message. Select one of the reporting
options.
Check spelling automatically
You can check your spelling automatically in tweets or messages.
1.
Press the Menu key.
2.
Click Settings.
3.
Select the Spellcheck Before Sending checkbox.

Stop checking if your tweets include
personal information
By default, Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones automatically notifies you if a tweet you have composed includes personal
information, such as a phone number, email address, or PIN.
1.
Press the Menu key.
2.
Click Settings.

Clear the Check tweets for personal information before sending checkbox.

About notifications
You can receive a Twitter notification on the home screen of your BlackBerry smartphone when you receive a new
message, when a person posts a tweet that mentions you, when one of your tweets is retweeted or favorited, when you have
a new follower, or when your tweet timeline is refreshed and new tweets are available. You can also receive a notification
automatically in the messages application.
Customize notifications
You can tailor the notifications you recieve to your preferences.
1.
Press the Menu key > Settings.
2.
Choose the options you would like to use by selecting or clearing the following check boxes:
•
Notify on new Tweets displays a notification on the home screen of your smartphone when there are new tweets
in your tweet timeline.
•
Notify on replies and mentions displays a notification on the home screen when there are new tweets that
mention you. You can limit the notifications to users who are Following or All Users.
•
Notify on retweets displays a notification on the home screen when one of your tweets is retweeted. You can limit
the notifications to users who are Following or All Users.
•
Notify on favorited tweets displays a notification on the home screen when one of your tweets is favorited by
another user. You can limit the notifications to users who are Following or All Users.
•
Notify on new followers displays a notification when someone follows you.
•
Integrate in Messages Application displays notifications in the Messages application.
Change your timeline refresh options
You can refresh your tweet timeline automatically with the latest tweets that the people you follow posted.
1.
Press the Menu key.
2.
Click Settings.

To refresh your tweet timeline automatically, select the Tweet refresh in the background checkbox.

To change how often your tweet timeline is refreshed, change the Refresh tweets every field.

Regardless of which Twitter account is active, you can receive notifications when you are mentioned in any of your Twitter

Type a person's name or username.

Click <name or user name> in people.
4.
Click the Follow icon beside the person's profile picture.

View similar profiles
Twitter compares a selected user's profile with other profiles and lists any similar profiles.
1.
Highlight a tweet.
2.
Press the Menu key > View <user>.

In the Similar to area, click a profile.
View your followers or people that you follow
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Me icon.
2.
Click Followers or Following.
To accept or decline follower requests, from an account with protected Tweets, click Follower requests.
View tweets that mention you
You can set up the Notifications tab to screen out new followers and retweets, and show only tweets that mention you.

Press the Menu key > Settings.

Click Show only mentions in the Notifications tab.

At the top of the screen, click the Me icon.

Type a name and description for your list.

To mark the list as private, select the Private List checkbox.

You can add a person to a list from your tweet timeline, your list of followers, the list of people that you follow, or from

Perform a search
You can search for Twitter user profiles and tweets that contain keywords. Twitter search results include related searches
and photos.
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Search icon.
2.
Type the search criteria or click a saved search or a recent search. To remove recent search terms, click Clear.
•
To search for a keyword, in the Search field enter the keyword. Press Enter.
•
To search for a user profile, in the Search field enter the name. Click the Silhouette icon.
If you want to save the search term , click Save this search. If your search returns results that are promoted by Twitter, you
can remove them from the search results. To remove a promoted tweet, press the Menu key > Dismiss.
View your saved searches or recent
searches
1.
At the top of the screen, click the Search icon.

Click a saved search or a recent search.
Delete a saved search or recent search
At the top of the screen, click the Search icon.

To delete all recent searches, click Clear.
•
To delete a saved search, highlight the search term. Press the Menu key > Delete Saved Search.
