The resurrection of our Hutt Valley Representive teams should add a great incentive to our players to represent and wear the Hutt Valley Green and Gold colours. Going forward into a Zone should give our present and developing players something to strive for and to achieve higher honours. Our Centre Manager has promoted Hutt Valley Netball to the highest degree of efficiency with her excellent organization. Phillipa leaves us with a great example of leadership which will be hard to follow on. We wish her well for the future in chosen career. Newly appointed General Manager Kim Whiteman explained her focus initially has been to develop the new Netball Wellington Region Strategic Plan and recruit the new team to deliver the outcomes. The current structure has been aligned with the Netball New Zealand restructure and the two will work well together. Kim briefly discussed the new organisational structure, discussing how the structure would work and the talents of the new team recruited. There is a strong netball background in the new team. The biggest change from the new structure for Netball Hutt Valley is the dissolution of Joanne Paora’s role as HV Development Officer. Joanne will join Netball Wellington Region as Year 1-6 Development Officer delivering development to the entire Wellington region. Centralising development will see a more consistent approach to delivery throughout the region. Netball 9 Wellington Region will deliver all the current programmes and will work on the development of new programmes and opportunities. The new Netball Wellington Region organisation has relocated to the new ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie. The 11 new staff are focussed and working well together in their new environment. The initial focus has been to get the budgets and plans right. There is a new Secondary School Regional League being developed to be played on a Monday night that will allow players better access to the lower north island representative teams while also exposing them to a lifted level of umpiring. Sport NZ (formerly SPARC) is working with Netball Wellington Region to get more people playing netball. They are looking to recruit players at a younger age, as seen in other sports, by funding Kiwisport into schools targeting 3 – 6 year olds. Netball New Zealand is also looking at developing the Fastnet game by running a test competition through secondary schools, the desired result will be to add some diversity to the sport. Netball Wellington Region is also looking to develop club capabilities and will be working with some of the bigger clubs initially to achieve these goals before rolling them out to all clubs. Netball Wellington Region is also working on having the current satellites more closely aligned into the current structure with a view to share more resources and make operations more efficient. Netball Wellington Region is waiting on the zone structure proposal from Netball New Zealand as this will impact on the timing of some of the Strategic Plan objectives. Netball Wellington Region will be concentrating on the challenges for the 2012 -2013 year but are looking forward to the future opportunities as they come. The Netball Wellington Region purpose is to deliver successful and vibrant netball in our region. GB - Question from Joanne Paora regarding the new Casual Player option, will the NHV Bylaws be required to be changed with regards to a players’ eligibility for finals matches? The NHV Bylaws are not required to be changed as a player must play three games to be eligible for finals and the new Casual Player option allows a player to play two games as a casual and upon playing a third game they must be registered to the club as a permanent player, this third game will also make them eligible for finals games. Firstly I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the business people in our community, whose support makes our sport a very rewarding one to be involved with. The sponsorships provided by these businesses help us to nurture, develop and foster netball in the Hutt Valley. Thank you to Ray Betteridge of Betteridge Engineering Limited and to Luke Wirangi of Atiawa Toa FM who have sponsored NHVC over the last 20 years and are still doing so today. Thank you also to Jarvis Plumbgas Services Ltd, NZTS, Athletes Foot Queensgate, Mr Rental, Les Mills Hutt City, Trophy House, Sport Check, Pro-Active Physio, Surge Electrical, New World Naenae and Lower Hutt, Hutt Indoor Sports, ECA Cleaning, Cellular Nutrition, and to McDonald’s Lower Hutt/Queensgate who sponsor our junior netball competition. And also out funders; Lion Foundation, Pelorus Trust, Endeavour Trust, Pub Charity, Infinity Foundation, Southern Trust, and the New Zealand Community Trust. The grants received from these funders are critical to our operation and we are extremely grateful for the support we have received. However, with huge demands being made for the same dollar and less sites available our chances of receiving funding as we’re used to is diminishing every year. Thank you all so much for your support and generosity which enables us to continue to deliver excellent netball in the Hutt Valley. Our season started on a high with a Guinness World Record attempt for the most consecutive netball passes. A very big thank you to Phillipa Whitney our Centre Manager and Cathy Roa; for all their hard work in securing sponsorship and for making it happen. A huge thank you to everyone who dressed up and participated and helped to make it a very successful morning with Pulse players being present and our Mayor Ray Wallace throwing the first pass. In total 180 consecutive passes were passed and caught. Our record has officially being registered and we have had the certificate framed. It now takes pride of place in our pavilion. The lows this season has been the behaviour on and off the court, of both players and supporters. Most weekends this season has seen the office bombarded with complaints of unacceptable, unsociable and unsportsmanlike behaviour. As a centre, we do not condone unsportsmanlike, intimidating behaviour under any circumstances. This will not be tolerated this season. We need to ensure that all of our members both junior, intermediate and senior have a safe environment in which to play, coach or manage and umpire. And everyone has a responsibility to ensure they conduct themselves in an appropriate manner to ensure this happens The Netball Wellington Region (NWR) restructure was implemented this year with Kim Whiteman at the helm as General Manager (GM). There were no changes to how we administered and delivered netball, but there were some changes on the development side. The biggest change for Netball Hutt Valley was the dissolution of Joanne Paora’s role as HV Development Officer. Jo joined Netball Wellington Region as Year 1-6 Development Officer delivering development to the entire Wellington region. By centralising development, we hoped to see a more consistent approach to delivery throughout the region. Netball Wellington Region delivered all the current programmes and worked on the development of new programmes and opportunities. We welcomed Jo onto our executive this year, and her passion and knowledge has been invaluable to the smooth running of the centre. One of the new programs introduced was a new Secondary School Regional League, played on a 13 Monday night for the second half of the season. This was fully supported by HV teams, and allowed players better access to the lower north island representative teams while also exposing them to a lifted level of competition and umpiring. This was a hugely successful league with our HV teams performing well, and this league will continue for the 2013 season. Sport NZ (formerly SPARC) is working with Netball Wellington Region to get more people playing netball. They looked to recruit players at a younger age, as seen in other sports, by funding Kiwisport into schools targeting 3 – 6 year olds. Jo was instrumental in delivering this new initiative into the primary schools throughout the Wellington region, who chose to take advantage of the program, and spent up to two weeks at a time in the schools. This was an extremely positive and successful program and one we hope to build on for 2013. Netball New Zealand nationally were also going through a restructure that has seen 12 regions moved into 5 zones. The wellington region has joined with Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and the Central Pulse to become Netball Central Zone Inc. Chris Cooper has been appointed CEO with Ian Collier as the Chair. We continue to support any new structure that will help in delivering and improving netball to our centre. A high in 2012, was confirmation in the HCC 10 year plan that 8 Million dollars has been allocated to the upgrade of the Walter Nash Stadium. Hallelujah!!!! This has been a long time coming, approximately 25 years and it’s exciting to see that is finally going to start happening at the end of our 2013 season. It’s been fantastic to have had such loyal support from our Mayor Ray Wallace and we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Again Phillipa our amazing Centre Manager put herself under pressure and got our submission together in a short amount of time, with our clubs doing their bit and sending in letters. It worked! We have had many successes in NHVC in the 2012 season and you can read of them in other reports later in this Annual Report but I would like to add my own personal congratulations to all our coaches, managers, players, umpires and bench officials who have achieved at local, national and international levels. Tasi and her band of umpires do an amazing job and they continue to be the envy of the other Centres. Our umpires are growing in number at all levels from Junior Whistlers to Seniors and we are very proud of all their achievements. Congratulations and keep up the good work, without the selfless energy of these people we wouldn’t be able to run such a successful competition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Yvonne Airey our local reporter who is seen at the Premier games every week, watching, and reporting on them. We appreciate the coverage and the support that Yvonne, the Hutt News and the Upper Hutt Leader give us each week. Yvonne ensures that netball has a high profile within our local community newpapers. Yvonne is stepping back from her journalism duties, and has a student who she will be mentoring in 2013. NHVC Finals Weekend began with Prizegiving for McDonald’s Lower Hutt Juniors on Friday 24th August where around 1500 children, mums, dads, grandparents, aunties, uncles, caregivers, friends etc all crammed into the Walter Nash Stadium. Afterwards every player was presented with a McDonald’s voucher and water bottle before proudly running off home with their respective caregiver. Saturday 25th August began with the McDonald’s Lower Hutt Intermediate Prizegiving at 10.30am where a smaller gathering of around 800 attended. I take this opportunity to thank Scott Horton from McDonald’s Lower Hutt and their ongoing sponsorship of our grass roots netball. All senior grade finals were played at 11.30 and 12.30. The Intermediate Challenge Match was played at 11.30 in the WNS, The Premier 1 2nd round final was played at 12.30pm and this year we also played the 3rd and 4th playoffs at 1.45pm as the curtain raiser to the Betteridge Engineering Premier 1 Final at 3.15pm before the Senior Prizegiving at 4.45 pm. 14 Our “Golden Girls” too are celebrated on our Finals Day. These are Life Members or Service Award Members who have given years of service to netball in the Hutt Valley and NHVC are honored to have the opportunity to recognize their service by inviting them all to lunch at the clubrooms where friendships are renewed amid hilarity and wonderful camaraderie. This is continued in the Walter Nash Stadium over afternoon tea during the final of the Premier 1 grade All of the above could not happen and would not happen without great planning and organisation. To this end I extend sincere thanks to our Centre Manager, Phillipa Whitney – this woman is a whiz and we have been so fortunate to have had her at the core of our establishment, and it has been with much sadness that I had to accept Phillipa’s resignation to take up a new position at Deloittes in Wellington. Phillipa has been the ‘heartbeat’ of NHV for 9 years – she has been instrumental in taking us into a new era of professionalism. Our netball centre is a force in the netball community due to work that Phillipa has done over the past 9 years, and for that we are eternally grateful. We are all going to miss Phillipa so much but we wish her all the best in her new job. Thank you to Tara Sellers our Administration Officer, yet another member of our staff who goes beyond the call of duty, and is just amazing in her support of everything that is happening in NHVC. Tara has also decided that it is time for her to embark on a new career and again we are so appreciative of all the work that she has done over the past 5 years. Thank you to Darryl Turley, Caretaker, who makes sure everything on the courts look clean, tidy and up to scratch every Saturday before members arrive. Last but not least, thank you to Sue Hare our Office Administrator on Saturday’s – your patience and your organisation of the Saturday competition is just brilliant! By the time this report goes to print we will have advertised and employed a new Centre Manager and Administration Officer and I wish them both the best of luck for the coming season. Please be patient and tolerant of any new initiatives that may be implemented in the coming season. To Kylie Morgan, President Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association – thank you to you and all the umpires for your support. For all the pre-season classes, club trials, rep trials, rep tournaments, schools classes, club classes, fitness sessions and theory sessions you have been called on by the Centre to run, your team have always been there – sincere thanks. To the NHVC Executive Committee 2012, I cannot thank you enough for your support and encouragement throughout this season. As volunteers you have been called on to tackle many difficult situations and I am extremely proud of the professionalism and passion you displayed as you have deliberated and made well informed decisions. To Tasi Betteridge (Vice President and my mentor), Sue Hare (Treasurer), Maureen Turley (Registration Secretary), Kora Pene (Piwi) and we welcomed on this year Jo Paora, Moana Harper and Gareth Fowler, and we said goodbye to Melissa Devine. – my sincere thanks for your dedication and passion to the sport and the netball Centre. My special thanks to our Patron Mrs Lorraine Duffy whose constant support and encouragement is very much appreciated. Lorraine can be found every Saturday in the umpire’s room or in the office helping Sue. Again we are so privileged to have such a loyal, outstanding and hands on Patron, who is willing to share her wealth of knowledge each week. And to whom no job is too big or too small. As we look forward to netball in 2013, it is with the sound knowledge that NHVC is in good hands and by working together we will continue to go from strength to strength. Genny Jarvis President Netball Hutt Valley Centre 15 • UMPIRES REPORT • NETBALL WELLINGTON REGION REPORT • YEAR 7 & 8 REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS • PRE SEASON TOURNAMENT RESULTS • GOLDEN OLDIES DAY • 2011 TROPHY WINNERS 16 UMPIRES REPORT 2012 2012 has been another successful year for the Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association (HVNUA). We started the season with our AGM and had the pleasure of inducting two new Life Members – Pam Dilnott and Dale Stechman. In addition to their continuing presence on court, Pam has been HVNUA Treasurer for many years and Dale has served as President of HVNUA and is tireless in her work within the schools. Both are committee members and the time and effort they have put into helping other umpires is truly appreciated. Also at the AGM we bid farewell to our long serving President, Mary McCarthy, after 5 years. Mary brought a sense of humour and fun to the role of President but still had great insight and compassion for those around her. She continues to give freely of her time to HVNUA and we draw on her wealth of knowledge and experience. A new President and Vice-President were elected and we are pleased that the majority of the hardworking committee has remained: President: Vice-President: Patron: Treasurer: Secretary: Immediate Past President: Draw Steward: Committee Members: Kylie Morgan Cherie Mateparae-Jobe Lorraine Duffy Pam Dilnott Gareth Fowler Mary McCarthy Tasi Betteridge Dale Stechman, Lorraine Duffy We lost a valued Committee Member in Diane Kakau who moved with her family to live in Australia. We wish her all the best and have heard that she is already making a good impression at her local netball competition! In 2012 we have 57 Umpires registered with us with the following number in their respective badges: 3 Junior Badge ; 6 Intermediate Badge ; 18 Centre Badge ; 10 Regional Badge; 7 NZ Badge 13 Umpires are yet to qualify, a number of whom are ex-Junior Whistlers now at college looking to pursue an umpiring career. We had a number of successes both on and off the court with regards to practical and theory examinations: Junior Practical: Intermediate Practical: Centre Qualifying: Regional Theory: Regional Qualifying: NZ Qualifying: Bench Officials (NZ Cert): *ex-Junior Whistler Sarah Gane, Grace Thomas*, Safari Hynes* Teresa Pusa*, Daisy Smith*, Safari Hynes* Phillipa Whitney, Janine Potroz Cathy Edmonds, Erica Pope, Tash Lerm, Karen Bevan Anita Taylor, Jodie Robertson Amanda Turley Piwi Pene NZ Cert.; Cathy Edmonds NZ Cert; Wendy Colledge All of these Umpires have worked extremely hard to achieve their results. We should acknowledge the support that they receive from their “Buddies” (mentors), Regional panel members (Gareth Fowler on the NZ panel and Mary McCarthy on the Regional panel) and their peers in helping them along the way. Once again Tasi Betteridge’s tutelage has brought out the best in our Umpires sitting the theory examinations adding to her already impressive success rate. Amanda Turley has had a particularly strong season. She has taken the opportunities presented to her and made the most of them including umpiring at the Regional Super League and the NNZ U17 tournament held in Christchurch. Initially on the waiting list for the U17 tournament, she not only answered the call-up but also attained her NZ Qualifying badge and umpired the final! Quite an achievement and feedback from officials was that Amanda maintained a high standard of umpiring throughout the tournament and the rewards were well deserved. Buddy Nuku is in the Under 19 Talent ID Umpires squad and was also selected to umpire at the NNZ U17 tournament. 17 Gareth Fowler has continued to achieve at the highest level. He has flourished in the NZ A Squad and is in the ANZ Championships Reserve Squad and he did in fact reserve an ANZ game this season. He attended the Pacific Netball Series in Fiji in June, umpired at the Silver Ferns trials in August and attended the Lion Foundation Championship finals in September. In addition to his on-court successes Gareth was a Panel Member at the NZ Age Groups (U19 and U21) and runs our own Academy programme within the centre for talented up-and-coming umpires. It is this kind of commitment and willingness to push himself that will guarantee that Gareth will go even further in his umpiring career. The Junior Whistlers continues to be a resounding success with 28 members this season. Tasi, as founder and ongoing mentor of this initiative, is firm yet caring with her charges ensuring that they have the best possible start to their umpiring careers. She has been ably assisted at different times by Lorraine Duffy, Cherie Mateparae-Jobe, Maureen Turley, Dawn Davis and Vikki Regnaud. One of the most gratifying aspects of this season has been seeing the concept of the Junior Whistlers coming to maturation with 18 members graduating and a number of ex-Junior Whistlers joining the Association as Umpires. In 2011 the Netball Hutt Valley Centre along with the Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association introduced the criteria where every player wishing to play netball in the Netball Hutt Valley Centre competition must attend an umpiring class. We continued these classes this season, holding 8 classes for schools and club teams that provide their own umpires with 267 people attending. Thank you to our members who assisted with these classes. Tasi also held classes on Wednesday nights for anyone from the general public interested in umpiring which saw 43 people attend. Tasi is also our Draw Steward, a job requiring great patience and organisational skills as she juggles umpires who have playing and coaching commitments to cover the required games. For all her work for HVNUA Tasi received a special nomination at the Wellington Region Sports Awards for Volunteer of the Year. Although she didn’t win we all believe that she truly embodies the spirit of the award. The Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Prizegiving was an “Olympic Event”. Umpires awarded trophies for 2012 were: “The Garvitch Rosebowl” – Junior Umpire: Daisy Smith “Lorraine Duffy Trophy” - Intermediate Umpire: Phillipa Whitney “Marie Clementson Cup” – Centre Umpire: Jodie Robertson “Hare Trophy” – Individual contribution by an Umpire: Dale Stechman “Driscoll Cup” – Outstanding contribution by an Umpire: Gareth Fowler “Newbolds Cup” – Club Contribution to HVNUA: St Peter & Paul School “Tasi Betteridge Cup” – Most Outstanding Umpire in HV: Amanda Turley “Umpire of the Year Trophy” – Highest achievement by a NZ Umpire: Gareth Fowler Like any successful programme, the running of the HVNUA is not left to chance. There are many people who are selfless, devoted and committed to making it work. These attributes are what we have built our reputation on and by which we have become the envy of many other centres. We have an inclusive, friendly atmosphere with people willing to share their knowledge which has assisted us in producing some outstanding Umpires. We also have members who are willing to step up and help where they can and I thank them for this. Whether it is as buddies, fundraising, umpiring at rep trials and fixtures, helping on Finals day or just being available to cover games when asked, everyone plays an important part within HVNUA. I would also like to acknowledge the hard-work and dedication of Phillipa Whitney who leaves Netball Hutt Valley (NHV) as Centre Manager. Thanks to Phillipa NHV has strengthened its position in the Wellington region and is seen as a professional organisation so it is well placed to be a leader in the restructuring of netball at the regional level. Phillipa has also been a friend to the Umpires’ Association and we were so pleased when she finally took up the whistle and we could call her one of our own! Last but not least I wish to thank the Committee. Without this wonderful bunch of people we could not continue to deliver an excellent standard of Umpiring to all levels of netball in the Hutt Valley and beyond. Kylie Morgan President Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association 18 NETBALL WELLINGTON REGION REPORT 2012 During 2012 the Netball Development Programme at Netball Hutt Valley was overseen by the Netball Wellington Region Development team. In this new structure we were fortunate to retain the knowledge and experience of Maria Hegarty, who transitioned from her role at Netball Wellington Centre into the Development Administrator position for the region. The Regional office also retained the services of both Sandra Edge as Coach Development Officer and Sue Geale as Umpire Development Officer. They continued to work tirelessly to create meaningful opportunities for the region’s coaches and umpires throughout 2012. In the new structure we also fortunate to have dedicated Player Development Officers, their roles focused on specific age groups. Rebecca Wills worked with the Intermediate/Junior secondary school age -group on Regional projects and facilitated the Netball Wellington Centre player development programmes. Jo Paora worked with the primary school age-group on Regional projects and facilitated the Netball Hutt Valley player development programmes. This approach increased our capability to implement In-school KiwiSport programmes, continue to visit schools on request and implement new player development opportunities. Evaluations of all our player development programmes have been conducted and the schools and parents have been impressed with the dedication and professionalism of Jo, Rebecca and development programme staff. This year has been about creating improved relationships with our stakeholders and providing them with more quality opportunities. Looking ahead to 2013 we have set a strong platform to build the capacity and develop our players, coaches, umpires and officials. We would like to thank all those involved with making this year’s development programme a success. Liz Page Development Manager Netball Wellington Region JUNIOR NETBALL DEVELOPMENT IN-SCHOOL KIWISPORT PROGRAMMES Welly Ball (Year 1-3) The Welly Ball programme involves introducing Fun Ferns into primary schools across the region and is linked to the NZ Health and Physical Education curriculum. Fun Ferns is a Netball New Zealand programme that focuses on the development of fundamental skills in a netball setting for Year 1-3 students. At the same time we have introduced a new 9-a-side game called Welly Ball that has been designed specifically for our Fun Ferns age group. Schools are provided with a resource and equipment pack to ensure the programme can continue to be delivered. The Netball Hutt Valley Centre schools that have taken part in the programme to date are: Pomare School, Eastern Hutt School, Waterloo School and Petone Central School. In Term One 2013 we are intending to run the programme at Our Lady of the Rosary School and St Peter’s and Paul’s School. 19 Nek Net (Year 9 & 10) The goal of the Nek Net programme is to increase player participation and level of skill through a modified netball game. Nek Net caters to both boys and girls to participate in an easy, fun, fast-paced environment. The Nek Net programme has been designed to incorporate the New Zealand Health & Physical Education Curriculum. Schools are provided with the resources and equipment to continue with the game at the conclusion of the programme. The Netball Hutt Valley Centre schools that have taken part in the programme to date are: Chilton St James School and Heretaunga College. Jo Paora and Rebecca Wills facilitated the KiwiSport programmes and we have had excellent feedback from all the schools involved. Both programmes are funded by KiwiSport through Sport Wellington, our thanks for their support through 2012. JUNIOR NETBALL AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMES Fun, Future & Mini Ferns Pre-season/Off Season Programmes The pre-season Fun Ferns, Future Ferns, and Mini Ferns programme was held at Taita Netball Courts over 4 weeks in February and March. The aim of the programme was to get players prepared for the upcoming trials for school teams. It also gave the opportunity for players to get back into training mode. The programme was facilitated by Jo Paora and her coaching team Lyn Imrie, Karen Bevan and Tyla Bevan. In Term Four there was also an off-season programme offered. There were twelve attendees who took part in the Year 3-6 group held at the Taita Netball Courts. Junior Netball Academy In Term One the Junior Netball Academy took place at the Walter Nash Stadium. We saw an increase in attendance in Term Two but a slight decrease in Term Three. The new venue, format and content have been successful and we hope to offer an even better programme next year. Netball Hutt Valley has over the years had a great team of dedicated coaches and this year has been no different. Thank you to Lynette Imrie, Karen Bevan, Tyla Bevan, and Urukeiha Isaia Hapimana, who have brought great energy and enthusiasm to this year’s academy. Thank you to the parents of our Junior Academy attendees whose on-going support of this junior initiative is most appreciated and of course the participants who create fun while learning. Off-Season Programme (Hutt Valley Identified Players Programme) The Off-season programme was targeted at Year 8 players who were looking to learn about conditioning and staying focused during the summer. Proactive Physio are sponsoring a 3-week programme which tests the players, assesses them and set an off season program for each player. In February next year the girls get together again and are reassessed. The aim is to enable the players to hit the ground running in the new season. The final round robin game for all of the Division 1 teams would confirm final placings going into playoffs. Unfortunately for Wellington, Waikato was too strong taking the game out 53-59 with Wellington finishing in 5th at the end of the round robin stage. Despite the setback, Wellington finished the tournament well avoiding relegation with wins over Bay of Plenty 54-41 and North 63-39 to finish 5th in Division 1. Tash Rowlands (Coach) 23 Year 8 Development Team 2012 Firstly I want to thank my wonderful team, they are an extremely talented bunch of girls who have all improved over the short period of time we have been together. I also would like to thank the parents because without their support, dedication and commitment the girls wouldn’t be where they are today. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this age group, they are like sponges wanting to learn and please and put on court what they have learned at training. This was extremely satisfying as a coach. The team also had an extremely strong bond amongst the players and everyone genuinely cared about the well-being of others in the team. There was a desire amongst the whole team to help each other out especially if they were not having a good game. Last and certainly not least I would like to thank my Manager Phillipa Whitney I really don’t know what I would have done without her. Phillipa had the team well organised so all I had to do was concentrate on coaching. Every team needs an excellent Manager and I certainly had the best of the best. I look forward to watching the development of these very talented players as I know they will all go very far in Netball. Janine Potroz (Coach) Netball Hutt Valley Year 8 Development Team 2012 24 Year 7 Gold 2012 Winners of Levin Tournament Year 7 Section - played 5 games. Winners of Hastings Tournament Year 7 Section - played 5 matches. Wellington Regional Tournament Runner Up to Kapi Mana. A fantastic group of talented young players, our strengths for this season was in our defense. In all games we produced lots of turnover ball particularly in the Regional Final unfortunately we could not capitalize on this at the other end. My thanks to all the support from the wonderful parents, our Hutt Valley umpires and of course Phillipa who we will miss dearly. It has been a great season. Mornain King (Coach) Year 8 Gold Team 2012 Our manager was Melanie Faaeteete and we would like to thank her and Moana Harper for helping us, the team and the parents ensuring that all ran smoothly at our tournaments. This season Year 8 gold team participated in 3 tournaments – Levin, the Wellington Combined Primary tournament held over 2 days in Wairarapa & Hutt Valley followed by Regional final between the top 2 teams in our grade at Te Rauparaha Porirua stadium and an overnight trip to Hastings. At Levin tournament we won 3 games & lost by 1 goal and ended up on equal points with Manawatu. However Manawatu had a greater goal average and moved through to the finals. This was a good opportunity for us to see how well the girls played and looking at combinations. At the first of the Regional primary tournament held at Wairarapa we had 2 closely fought games against Motu Kairangi & Motu Kairangi development teams and one big win over Wairarapa. The overnight trip to Hastings is the highlight of the netball rep season. On the Sunday we played a total of 4 games. We played and won against Gisborne HB, Hastings, Napier. In the final we faced our Hutt Valley Development team to take the Year 8 grade. The 2nd Primary Tournament day was held at Hutt Valley. Our first game against Kapi-Mana was tough and we lost. In our 2nd & third games we won by large margins against Wellington West and Kapiti. We ended up coming in 2nd place with Hutt Valley Development team. On Sunday 26 August we played at Te Rauparaha in Porirua against Kapi-Mana in the final. This was closely fought and the girls played well but we just couldn’t catch up and they won 28-33. Overall we were pleased with the team and the progress they made during the season. It’s just made it in time for the end of the season, but Netball Hutt Valley Centre’s Phillipa Whitney is pleased to now have the official confirmation certificate noting their successful Guinness World Record of 180 consecutive netball passes set on 21 April at the Taita Courts in an attempt organized by the Centre to mark the opening of the 2012 season. (The previous record was 167). The certificate will be on show on finals weekend and those involved in setting the record will no doubt want to use it as a photo opportunity, says Mrs Whitney. 36 Girls play up to good coaching By Nicholas Boyack Future Ferns: The Valley Fronds recently won the Hutt Valley Intermediate netball title. From left: Back, Kelsi Bevan, Holly Whitney, Aicha Ahloo, Justyce Harper, Lei Pesefea and sitting, Milla Tarawhiti, Honestly Watene, Emma Lavery and Crystal Ruatara Photo: PETE MCDONALD As a successful sporting experiment, the Valley Fronds would take a lot of beating. The Fronds were recently crowned the top Hutt Valley intermediate team, beating perennial finalists Hutt Intermediate 25-22. The team was put together in 2006 by netball stalwart Jo Paora, as an experiment. She took a random group of kids, who had received basic coaching to see how they would respond over time to a top coach, Karen Bevan. The team has stayed together and centre manager Phillipa Whitney says the girls have responded tremendously. “They were just average kids, they were not chosen because of their ability.” Over the past two years, their skills have really developed and the impact of getting good coaching has become obvious. This year they provided Hutt Intermediate with a real challenge and she says there was very little between the two teams. The key to success has been the involvement of Bevan, who has coached the girls for six years. “Her expertise as a coach is amazing……. The girls have been very lucky to have her.” The girls will now go to college and she predicts that many will go on to become top players. The idea was such a success, it has been decided to repeat it and another group are now going through the same skills-based coaching system. 37 Long service recognised at Hutt Valley Netball AGM By Yvonne Airey On the ball: They’ve given over a century of service between them to Hutt Valley netball. From left is: Sandy Wallace (Taita Netball Club), Wendy Osborne (Maidstone), Carol Cody (High School Old Girls) and Sue Bentley (Maidstone). A trio who between them have given 82 years' service to Hutt Valley Netball have been recognised. They have over 2,000 players competing on the courts each Saturday, so without the many willing volunteers who support the teams, Netball Hutt Valley would not be the success it is, President Genny Jarvis commented during the presentation ceremony of four coveted Hutt Valley Service Awards at the AGM last Monday. The recipients were Carol Cody from the High School Old Girls Club (30 years' service), Sandy Wallace, Taita(29 years), and Maidstone Club sisters Sue Bentley and Wendy Osborne (23 years' service). Described as "the heart" of HSOG, Carol Cody has been its treasurer for the last 30 years and played a significant part in generating sponsorship and running the fundraising. A premier one player, she has coached for 22 years, been the main selector for the last 8, umpired, managed and represented the club at centre level. Taita Netball's club captain, coach, facilitator, "Mum and Dear Abbey" Sandy Wallace began her involvement as a player in 1983 and has helped grow the club, taking on such tasks as outfitting the teams and organising the constantly-necessary fundraising events. Upper Hutt's Sue Bentley, named the regions coach of the year following her success with the U19 Wellington team in 2011, joined Maidstone as a player in 1989 and has served as a committee member and coach, fundraiser, selector. This year with her sister Wendy she is coaching the Upper Hutt College Premier 1 team. Wendy Osborne also joined as a player in 1989 and has served on the club's committee, holding specialist posts as treasurer and minute secretary, and has been a selector and coach for most of her 23 years with Maidstone. In 2011 Netball Hutt Valley won the Hutt City and then the Regional Sport and Leisure section awards in the annual Wellington Airport awards for volunteer service to their community and longservice umpire and NHV Vice -president Tasi Betteridge was a nominee for the Sparc Wellington Volunteer of the Year award. 38
