Hispanicliteraturebywomenthroughouthistory;developsanappreciationforthecultural
differencesfoundinfemaleliteratureintheHispanicworld.Prerequesite:CH201,202or203,Eng.102;
studentshouldhaveJuniororSeniorstanding.TaughtinEnglish.
CoreObjectives.
ThemainobjectiveofthiscourseistointroducestudentstotheliteraturewrittenbyHispanic
women(Spain,SpanishAmerica,andtheU.S.)bymeansoflectures,readings,multimediapresentations,
andstudentparticipationactivities.Thecourseisintendedtoservenotonlyasagatewaytothe
literaturewrittenbyHispanicwomen,butalsoasanopportunityforstudentstoarticulatethecultural
andeconomicconnectionsamongthevariousnationsrepresentedandtherestoftheworld—including
theUnitedStates—andtopracticeliteraryanalysisandinterpretationofHispanictexts.Itisalsoa
gatewaytoliteraryanalysisandinterpretationingeneral,includingavarietyofissuessuchasgender,
sexuality,andfamilyhistoryacrosstheHispanicworld.Wewillexamineissuessuchasgender
expectations,marriage,andsexuality,andhowtheseissuesintersectwithraceandclass.Thecourse
includespoetry,fictionalprose,chronicle,journalisticarticles,film,anddrama.

CoreObjective10:DiversityandEquity.Studentswilldemonstrateanunderstandingof
diversitythroughcoursesthatfocusontopicssuchasrace,ethnicity,gender,sexuality,religion,physical
ability,language,and/orsocialclasswithanemphasisontheanalysisofequity.Studentswillapplyand
evaluateapproachesormodesofinquiryusedtoanalyzediversityandequityandthesocialbarriersto
thesegoals.ThecourseexaminesthehistoricalandcontemporaryexperiencesofHispanicwomenand
theirrepresentationsasamarginalizedgroupwithinHispanicsociety,asportrayedintheliterary
exampleschosen.ItwillprovidestudentswithapanoramicviewofHispanicfeminineliteraryculture
anditsimpactintheworld;examinehowthemultiplicityofwomen'sexperiences‐‐includingdifferences
inclass,countryoforigin,ethnicity,andsexualorientation‐‐affecttheform,theme,andtopicsoftheir
writing;exploresuchrelatedtopicsastherelationtopatriarchyandthemaletradition;femaleidentity;
sexandgender;therelationshipsbetweengender,race,andclass;differenceandoppression;
performanceand performancepractices,andaudiences.Throughdiscussions,writtenjournal
responses,quizzes,andafinalproject,thecoursewilldevelopanappreciationoftheaestheticsand
culturaldifferencesoffemaleliteraryexpressionwithintheHispanicworld.

Coreknowledge,enablingthemtoanalyzeopen‐endedproblemsorcomplexissues.Thecoursetakes
advantageofallthewriting,literature,and/orhistoryclassestakenbythestudents,includingCore
Humanities202.Theywillwritesixcriticalresponsestothedifferenttopicspresentedbytheworks
(feminism,socialclass/race/identity,indigenousissues,magicrealism/difference/alternaterealities,
dictatorships/totalitarianism/violence,andnewvoices).Theywillhaveampleopportunitytochoose
fromthetextspresented.ThisintegratesCO1becausetheywillpracticecomposing,revising,responding,
editing,andwritingwithaudienceandpurposeinmind.Eachresponsewillrequireaclearthesis
statement,thusforcingthestudenttobecomeawareoftheirownbeliefs,concepts,orbiases.Italso
integratesCO3becausetheywillhavetocriticallyevaluatetheinformationfromthetextsandcontribute
tothescholarlyclassdiscussions.Thetopicswillforcethemtoexplainandapplyethical,legal,andsocial
issuesrelatedtotheinformationprovided.

Theclassisorganizedbytopics:Webeginwithatheoreticalfeministfoundation,movinginto
feminismintheXVIIcentury,socialclass/race/identityinSpainandinLatinAmerica,indigenousissues
inLatinAmerica,magicrealism/difference/alternaterealitiesinLAandinSpain,
dictatorships/totalitarianism/violenceinSpainandLA,andnewliteraryvoices.Thereisavarietyoftexts
includedpertopic.Thiscourserequiresasignificantamountofwriting,andyourabilitytoexpress
yourselfclearlyinwritingwillsignificantlyaffectyourgrade.Therewillbesixwrittencriticalresponses
thatrequireagoodunderstandingofthelecturesandtheassignedreadings.Iwillnotacceptsummaries
ofthestories.Therefore,youshouldhaveaclearunderstandingofhowtodevelopacriticalresponse.
Themidtermandfinalexamwillbecomprehensiveandwilltestyourfamiliaritywiththetextsandthe
terminologystudiedaswellasyourabilitytoformulatecoherentandinsightfulliteraryinterpretations.
Attheendofthecourseyouwillwritearesearchpaperthatsummarizesscholarlyconversationsand
makeconnectionsbetweenthetextsdiscussedinthiscourse.TheessaymustfollowMLAguidelessand
embodyatleastthreereferencesofcrediblesources.Itwillbebetween5and8pageslong,double
spaced.Youmaychoosetoworkonaspecifictextorauthor,acomparisonandcontrastingoftwoor
more,ortheapplicationofatheoreticalframework.Youwillhaveanopportunitytodiscusstheselected
topicwithyourinstructor.Ahandoutwillprovidefurtherguidelinestoassistyouinwritingthe
