I. Reading
Read the following text and answer the questions below
Paragraph Classic Maya civilization reached incredible heights 3,000 years back. There is evidence suggesting that the arrival
1
of a great warrior from central Mexico led to an age of glory and pride. Splendid work of art, such as the death
mask of King Pakal, is a symbol of that time. But empires rise only to fall. Historians believe that natural and manmade disasters hurried the Classic Maya collapse.
Paragraph Ancient inscriptions, found on shabby pieces of papers, give the date of 8 January, 378 for the first appearance of
2
the warrior “Fire Is Born”. He arrived in Waka, in present-day Guatemala, as a messenger of a great power in the
highlands of Mexico. In the coming decades, his name would appear on monuments all across the area of the
Maya. In his time, the Maya reached the peak of glory that lasted five centuries. Their ruined cities and their
beautiful remains made many researchers imagine the Maya was a gentle society of poets and artists. However,
as researchers finally learned to read the Maya hieroglyphics, a darker picture appeared. It was an image of wars
and destroyed palaces.
Paragraph
3
One day in the year 800, the peaceful Maya nation was attacked. King Kan Maax must have known that trouble was
coming, for he had tried to build strong fence around his 200-room palace. He didn't finish in time. So, the Southern
attackers overran the outskirts of the city and quickly entered the center. They took hostages, stole precious jewels
and killed hundreds of people.
Paragraph
4
Another speculation of the Maya collapse centered on a sudden catastrophe of a volcano or an earthquake or a
deadly hurricane, or perhaps it was a mysterious disease. In fact, the Maya has always been a mystery. Yet,
unfinished construction projects, half-carved stone monuments, pots, bowls and remains of the royal palace kitchen
can be seen till our present day.

Read the following text and answer the questions below
Paragraph
1
Lions and tigers are among the most ferocious animals, but there are important differences between them.
They are both among the four big cats. The other two are jaguars and leopards. They are apex predators. That is
to say, they have no predators of their own, and they reside at the top of their food chain. Most lionesses hunt
together in daytime, males rarely help; but tigers hunt alone during night. Large animals such as deer and
buffalo are favorite preys of both lions and tigers. Tigers also hunt fish, birds, reptiles and sometimes even baby
elephants.
Paragraph
2
After a gestation period of 110 days, the pregnant lioness leaves the pride and finds a place to deliver. She hides
her newborn cubs in marshes. However, a tigress gives birth to 2-4 cubs after 104 days. The cubs stay with their
mother for up to 2 years before leaving to stake out their own territories.
Paragraph
3
Tigers are the largest feline species in the world known for their fierce eyes, whereas male lions are highly
distinctive and easily recognized by their manes. Lions typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they
may also live in bushes and forests. Tigers are native to the mainland of Asia, particularly India, China, and
Indonesia. Because tigers face the danger of extinction, the majority of them now live in captivity. Despite being
endangered, tigers live longer than lions for extra 15 to 20 years.
Paragraph
4
What happens if a lion and a tiger fight with each other? The tiger would most probably beat the lion. Tigers are
slightly stronger, a bit bigger and have sharper bites. But the result of the battle will always depend on the age,
health, and experiences of both the tiger and the lion.
