Term One events
Each term Kerrimuir develops a few special events, which the
children participate in, created and often run by the staff.
Tonight we are holding the Twilight Sports, which is a chance
to meet people for the whole family, whilst joining in with some fun
games. Food will be available to purchase and the fun starts on the
oval at 5.30pm, so children can be home shortly after the 7.30pm
finish. Many thanks to parents who have volunteered to assist in the
cooking and delivery of food. Staff this year are running both the
events and the food, so they will be exhausted after a long day in the
classroom. Parents, if you are able to lend a hand, your support would
be greatly appreciated. In the future, some events may not be able to
run if we don’t have enough people prepared to lend a hand for 30
minutes or so.

Information 2016– Grade 1
This Friday afternoon we are running a CALC (Creating a Learning
Community) event. The CALC program ensures children settle well into
their new classrooms, develop classroom rules to follow, and begin
bonding as a group. Friday highlights the end of the CALC program,
with a fun multi-age collaborative group event.

Parent – Teacher Interviews are also happening later this term, from
the 7th to the 11th March. If you haven’t yet booked a time through
Compass, there are still some good options available.
The Kerrimuir Super Egg competition day will be held on Thursday,
24th March. More information will be coming shortly regarding how this
works. Children decorate a plastic egg, and try to make it move swiftly
down a corrugated slope, with the aim of being first to reach the
ground. Class competitions find the fastest eggs for each class, then the
class winners race against each other in the Super Egg final. On this
day we also run the Kerrimuir Gift, which echoes the Stawell Gift, and
is run on the school oval, with year level races, for both girls and boys.
Regards
Karyn
Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no
further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today,
begins where competition leaves off.

Performing Arts Students of The
Week!
During Term 1 in Performing Arts, we are an introducing a new concept
called 'PA Students of The Week'! This will be given during most classes to a student who may
do a great dance, be a great team leader, help others in the class or even for helping the
teacher with demonstrations. The names of these students will go up on the PA Students of
The Week board, located in the entrance to the front office all day on a Monday and in the
Performing Arts Room for the remainder of the week. From this group of students, one will
be chosen to receive the Performing Arts Award at the following Monday morning assembly.
Congratulations to the following students for receiving the award in their class for Week 5 of

PE NEWS!
PE has been full of fun, fitness and skill development so far this term! It has been terrific to see such enthusiastic students!
In Prep we are focussing on basic movement activities, minor games, and fundamental motor skills, including
running, skipping, jumping as well as ball skills such as bouncing, rolling, throwing and catching. Prep students also participate in a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) once a week. This program aims to develop
spatial awareness, body control, co-ordination, motor skills, memory and problem solving skills. Whole
group floor sessions have been a focus this term. Next term we will begin rotations and will be inviting parents to assist.
So far this term, Year 1 and 2 students have participated in minor games and activities to develop particular fundamental motor skills such as running, jumping, dodging as well as ball handling skills such as overarm throwing and hand dribbling.
Year 3 and 4 students have been involved in fitness activities and co-operative games and are developing
ball handling skills such as catching, overarm throwing, chest and shoulder passing. Students at this level
participate in modified sports and games to practice these skills.
Year 5 and 6 students are currently participating in a unit on modified volleyball. Students have also have
participated in games and activities to develop fitness and team work skills. The development of students’
ability to use game sense and tactics is an ongoing part of the PE program at this level through participation in major and modified sports.
We have been fortunate to have a number free clinics run at school this term that support the PE program.
These have targeted various year levels and have included; a tennis for the whole school (Prep to Year 6),
Kelly Sports for Years 1 and 2 and a hockey clinic for students in Years 2 to 4. Soccer clinics are scheduled
for later in the term for students in Years 3 to 6.
We’re a Sporting School!
Kerrimuir Primary School has registered for Sporting Schools, a
new Australian Government programme designed to give our
students the opportunity to have access to sport-based activities.
The Sporting Schools program will complement our existing PE
curriculum, allowing our students to explore a range of dynamic
new sports. Sporting Schools will help us work more closely with
sporting clubs in our community, and tap into the large pool of
talented sports coaches in the local community.
The good news is, Sporting Schools is funded by the Australian
Government, which means there are no additional costs to parents. This term students in Year 5 and 6 will participate in an Orienteering program run by Orienteering Victoria.
Friendly Reminder:
Please ensure that your child wears or brings their runners to school on the days they have PE or sport. Water bottles
are also strongly recommended. If for any reason your child cannot participate in PE please send a note.
Many thanks for your support,
Kirrily Gloufchev

CALC - whole school Newspaper and Masking
Tape costume–making activity – Friday, 26th February.
We’re all looking forward to our traditional ‘end of CALC/
first month back at school’ activity this Friday afternoon.
Traditionally, this activity provides an opportunity for
students across the school to celebrate their first weeks
together and to get to know each other even better. As
usual, the quick-thinking, creative minds and nimble fingers
of Kerrimuir students will astound their teachers – staff
members are quite sure of this!
We will conclude the activity with a quick ‘show and share’
of newspaper creations in the Multi-purpose room. Photos
will no doubt appear at a future Friday Assembly.
In Grade 5 this term we have been studying Earth’s place in Space in our Science lessons.
We have been looking at our place in space. Here is some of the students work exploring
the different parts of space.
We have also been calculating ‘5A in numbers’. We have
measured our height, weight and how many siblings, pets
and computers we have. We also collocated all this data
with some interesting results.

Camp Australia Newsletter – Week beginning ---22 Feb 2016--Last week the OSHC team introduced the children to an acknowledgement tree for their collective and individual actions that staff
observe during before and after school care. The tree contains a
wooden peg which has each child’s name printed on it plus a
‘whole OSHC’ wooden peg. There are five branches of the tree
each child starts at ‘Nice Job’ and can climb two steps either way.
Positively up through Great Work to Superb Actions or be asked to
Make Better Choices on the way down before Alert. Since its introduction on Tuesday morning (16 Feb), the whole OSHC group has
climbed and remained on Superb Actions - the highest spot on the
tree. I would like to complement all the children who attending
OSHC over the last week for working so well as a collective group
to remain at this position. Some children have also reached the
‘Superb Action’ position individually for observations such as:

consistently packing up after others not just the items they
used themselves
 repeatedly showing role model behaviours
 supporting staff by influencing peers to follow educator instructions
using initiative to contribute to shared responsibilities (e.g. packing
up breakfast)
We have also introduced the reflection journal of which children,
parents and teachers are welcome to contribute by adding feedback about their observations or experiences with OSHC. This is
placed at the sign in/out table.
If you have any enquiries, or need to contact us for any reason,
please call us on 0401 279 208 or our Camp Australia Customer
Service Team on 1300 105 343.
Regards,
Mary-Anne (Coordinator) & the OSHC team
