Definitions







Characterization: An author or poet's use of description, dialogue, dialect, and action to create
in the reader an emotional or intellectual reaction to a character or to make the character more
vivid and realistic. Careful readers note each character's attitude and thoughts, actions and
reaction, as well as any language that reveals geographic, social, or cultural background.
Direct Characterization: The narrator or a character in the story tells us exactly what we need
to know about a character.
Indirect Characterization: We find out about characters indirectly through thoughts, comments,
or actions of the characters.
Flat Character: A character with few personality traits (few details given).
Round Character: A character with many personality traits (many details given).
Static Character: A character that does not change personality, beliefs, ideas, etc. throughout the
work.
Dynamic Character: a character that experiences some type of change during the course of the
story due to events.

We’re never given a definitive answer as to what
Fortunato allegedly did to Montresor. You get to
create a scenario dastardly enough to warrant
Montresor’s actions and Fortunato’s fate.
