RECYCLED CRAFTING IN GREEN CLUB
Last week our Year 11 and Sixth Form
textile students had a fun day out
at Burnt Fen alpaca farm with Ann
Nickerson and her wonderful array of
animals. The girls enjoyed getting to
know all the alpacas, ducks, dogs and
cats - and the alpacas certainly enjoyed
the carrots and apples we took along
for them!
Even though the wind was roaring and
the rain pouring, we were all very
warm and cosy in the yurt. The girls
were given a wonderful opportunity to
try the ancient art of felt making.
Having made their own felt using the
alpaca wool, they then designed a felt
flower to take away as a lovely
memory of the trip.
There are lots more photos on the blog.

Heavy bags raise lots of money
We’re pleased to report that our Bag 2 School collection of unwanted
clothes and shoes weighed in at a whopping 360kg! This has helped
the Parents’ Association to raise a further £180 to spend on the school.
Thank you all again for your kind donations.
Green club is back in full swing this term and
now the garden is sorted for the winter we are
starting on our recycled crafting.
After completing miniature bookmark bows last
week, this time we tried our hand at newspaper
weaving. It was generally agreed this was much
trickier then it initially looked!
For some, the success was in completing the
vases, whilst for others it was in having the
perseverance to carry on even when it got
difficult! Either way, everyone found the hour
spent on this project very amusing.
Green Club runs every Wednesday in Lab C
from 4pm-5pm. Any senior girl that would like
to join us will find a warm welcome.
HOUSE AUTUMN
PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION
A reminder to get snapping over half-term and
capture some of those “mists and mellow
fruitfulness” with your cameras. We hope to
receive lots of entries for our house autumn
photographic competition!
The closing date for the competition is
Wednesday 6th November. Photographs should
be printed out, no bigger than A4 size, with the
name of your house and year written on the back.
The judging will be conducted by an independent
person. 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed entries will be
displayed in school from 11th-22nd November.
We expect each house to enter photographs for
each category: staff, sixth form, Years 10 & 11,
Years 7 - 9 and the Upper Prep School. House
points will also be awarded for placed entries.
The Tenner Challenge
As part of enrichment, Year 12 pupils have been learning how to become
entrepreneurs. Each group was given £10 and challenged to make as much
money as possible over a five week period. The rules were simple – no
gambling and nothing illegal! Each group had to account for all the money they
spent. Groups were encouraged to reinvest their revenue in order to make more
money. The profit, after the £10 start-up capital had been repaid, was donated to
charity. Here’s how the girls did.
Group 1: ‘Sweetie-Licious’
(Katie, Megan, Ellie, Sonia and Hannah K)
‘We had lots of initial ideas including selling tickets for a film in the
Barn at lunchtime and selling popcorn, taking photos, framing and
selling them and holding a disco. In the end, we decided to sell bags of
sweets to the rest of the school. We invested £7 initially. After our first
sale, we had enough money to buy another £18 worth of sweets. After
the second sale we had a profit of £31.67 which we will donate to
EACH (East Anglian Children’s Hospice).’
Group 2: ‘Friendlinks’
(Sophie B, Amy, Alice and Isabel)
‘We had the idea of making handmade friendship bracelets. We chose to make bracelets because
they have a personal feel and individuality. We spent just under £10 buying charms and
multi-coloured string. Each bracelet took around thirty minutes to make. We took £91.40, which
makes a profit of £81.40 after the £10 was repaid. It took just ten minutes for us to sell out, so all
the time spent making them definitely paid off! We are giving the money to GOSH (Great Ormond
Street Hospital) in the hope that it will benefit those in need.’
Group 3: ‘The Smileys’
(Sophie D, Hannah B, Angel and Erica)
‘Raising money? Robbing a bank was the first thing that sprung to mind!
Strangely, we were informed that this is, in fact, illegal.
In order to raise money for our chosen charity, the NSPCC, we decided to make
party bags instead; because who doesn’t like to party? Our product was aimed
at the younger years in the school. Items in the bags ranged from stretchy,
smiley men to multi-coloured slinkies.
Over all, we spent £21.18 on our products (after reinvestment following our
first sales). We took £38.05 in revenue and so our current profit is £16.87. It
took some time for our items to arrive and so we are still selling party bags and some individual items. We will let you know
how much we have raised after we have finished selling our products. Thank you to all our fantastic smiley customers, and
don’t forget our bags are still on sale!’
Tennis Halloween News
A record-breaking number of
pupils throughout the school, from
reception to the sixth form, have
been attending tennis coaching this
term and a new nursery mini tots
class for our very youngest pupils
will be starting very soon!
The mini tennis programme is flourishing and all the
pupils are taking part in the Mini Tennis Rally Awards
Scheme. There will be a presentation of badges and
certificates at the end of term.
This week, all tennis lessons have followed the
Halloween theme. There have been fun Halloween
tennis games and activities including treasure hunts,
spider relay races, skeleton serving games, creepy
rallying competitions and much, much more!
