DEFINITION
Under general supervision,to diagnoseand make complex mechanicalrepairs to a variety
of gasoline and diesel automotive, construction and mechanicalequipment; to operate
computerized diagnostic equipment; to lead the work of Mechanics I and II during the
course of their work and to perform other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Highly skilled, advancejourney level, most technically proficient; train and lead, for
example working on construction equipment in general.
The Mechanicill classis assignedto perfonnadvancedjourneylevelmechanicalrepairs
to eitherheavyequipmentanddieselpoweredtrucksor automobiles,light trucksand
othermechanicalequipment. Thisclassis responsibleto providelead direction,training
and work reviewto a staff of MechanicsI and n in the maintenance
anddiagnosticrepair
of a varietyof fleet items,and personallyperfonnthe most complexmechanicalrepairs.
The position is distinguished by the higher level classof Supervising Mechanic in that the
latter is responsibleto supervise,review, plan, schedule,and coordinate the work of
mechanicsand other subordinate personnel in the central garage engagedin the
maintenanceand repair of Monterey County vehicles and equipment.
Thisclassis furtherdistinguishedby the lower levelclassof MechanicII in that the latter
works underdirection,performingjourneyleveldiagnosisandrepairof all typesof
defectsin gasanddieselpoweredlight and heavyequipment.MechanicsII do not
scheduleor supervisethe work of subordinatesnor performthe most highlyskilled
repairs.
EXAMPLES OF D!ITlliS:

Leads Mechanic I and II staff by planning, organizing, coordinating, and
assigning daily activities; give on the job training and instructions to
subordinate staff; prepare performance evaluations;make recommendationsto
supervisor regarding promotions, reassignment,recognition of outstanding
performance, and personnel needs;

to see that the supervisor's instructions on work priorities, methods, deadlines
and quality have beenmet;

cranes,loaders,graders,scrapers,compressors,asphaltpavers,trucks,

Maintains reference materials such as manuals,technical guides, policies and
procedures, directives, project files and relevant background documents and
makesavailable policies, procedures and written instructions from the
superVISOr;

Education:
Completionof the equivalentof two yearsof classroomtraining and supervisedon-thejob trainingin automotiveand heavyequipmentmechanics.

Completionof a heavyequipmentmechanicaltraining program,leadingto an Apprentice
MechanicCertificate.
OR
Completionof training coursesleadingto any of the NationalInstitute for Automotive
ServiceExcellenceRepairCertificates.
E~rience:
Three yearsof experienceperformingjourney level mechanicalwork including work on
automotiveand/orheavyduty constructionequipmentplussomeleadexperience.
OR
Two years as a Mechanic II in Monterey County performing journey level mechanical
work on automotive and/or heavy duty construction equipment plus some lead
experience.
REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is subjectto drug and alcohol testing as required by the Omm"bus
Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
As a condition of employment, the incumbent will be required to:
1. Possessa valid CaliforniaClassC Driver's License.
2. Possessor acquire both a valid California Class A Driver's License and required
endorsementsnecessaryto operate fleet equipment, during the probationary
period.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
The physical and sensoryabilities required for this classificationincludes:

Ability to kneel, crawl and climb sufficient to carry out the requirements of the
job.
2. Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry equipment or items weighing a minimum of
75 pounds.
