2. The excerp t from the novel “Slam” by Nick Hornby deals with a young boy named Sam. He explains how he expe riences his 16th birt h day.
After having a breakfast wit h his mum, he receives a message from a girl named Alicia. She wants to see him imme diately. He begins to panic. Then he texts her secretly in the bathro o m that he canno t see her on his birth day.
However she wants him to come and see her. He says to himself that he wants to back to his childho o d when he
could not cause any trou bles.
On the way to Alicia he tries to make a deal wit h God sort of having no more sex etc. When he sees her, he thinks
whet he r she has proble ms, if she is threatened by his ex. While he is waiting in the queue to buy some drink, he
does not feel good at all. Because he is afraid of what Alicia will tell him. After meeting her finally, she tells him
that she probably is pregnan t.
3. The picture shows a naked woman wit h whit e skin and a baby with dark skin. She is holding the baby. They bot h
have big eyes and they look surprised. At the top of the picture there it is writ t e n
“Have sex after drinking and you could be nursing more than a hangover”. Beside the picture there is a box. In this
box is writ t e n infor ma t i o n about who m to contact if you need advice for your sex life. The picture seems awkward
because the skin colors of the characters are dif f eren t and I think that is why they look so surprised. The cartoonist
wants to convince people that many young ladies are having sex with o u t knowing the consequences. He also
wants people to know that you should watch out if you drink too much alcohol. Because could do everyt hin g after
that like somet hing you would regre t. The text below says that young people under 18 should infor m themselves
about sex bef ore having sex.

2. The excerp t from Nick Hornby´s novel "Slam" deals with Sam, a London teenager´s birth day. Alicia, a friend, does
not have good news for him!
First the author describes the agenda of Sam´s birt h day. Everythin g is okay, but then he receives a message from
Alicia, which says that she needs to see him. After Sam has read the text his mo the r wants to know who it is, but
Sam blocks. He begins to panic. Af ter a while he decides to go to see Alicia in an agreed- on restauran t. On his way
he broo ds much and his conclusion is that he will never have sex again. When he arrives at the restauran t, Alicia al ready waits for him. Sam does not want to talk to her. This is why he gets in the queue and hopes it will last long
to order somet hing. Finally it takes no time... With his drink he goes to her. First she congrat ula tes him, then she
says that she is late.

At the end of the excerp t you can suppose that Alicia will have a baby and because of her message (URGENT) it can
be seen as a proble m.
3. The cartoon which was placed in dif f eren t teen magazines by the UK govern m e n t shows a naked wo man, who is
looking really conf used, and a naked baby, whose face also looks really confused. These two people are in the cen ter of the pict ure. Above them you can see a headline which says "Have sex after drinking and you could be nurs ing MORE than a hangover". Above all, the color of the baby raises atten t i o n. It is purple. In addition to this the
baby is in the wo man´s arms and they are looking at each other.
What strikes me first is the headline. It says that you should not have sex after you drank something (alcohol).
Maybe the cartoonist want ed to say that if you were drunk you would of ten forge t to cont racep t and after nine
mon t hs you would have a baby. Sometim es it is a proble m to have a baby. Mostly if you are very young. This is the
reason why you should look for cont racep t i o n if you want to have sex. I think the girl/wo ma n in the picture is con fused because she does not know why she is having a baby. She must have had sex while she was drunk and as a
consequence he/she forgo t to cont racep t. In my opinion this cartoon should be an appeal to all teens to be careful
wit h sex and cont racep t i o n because it could be a sea change to their life in the futu re and it is more restrained
not to have a baby when you are young

Sam celebrates his sixteent h birt h day wit h his family. When his mum asks Sam who texts him, he is not abou t
telling her, because he knows that somet hi ng is wron g wit h Alicia, a girl he had sex wit h. He is in trou ble, because
she sent him that it is very impor t a n t to meet. First he does not want to, because of his birth day, but she texts
him to come im me dia tely to a cof fee shop. Sam begins to panic and wishes to be young again and he makes prom ises to himself and god not to do such a crap, he did in the past. When he comes to the shop, he is extre m ely ner vous abou t what will be after he has talked to Alicia. He sees her sitting in a corner. He hesitates, because he has a

forebo di n g of what could be wron g, but then he wen t over to listen to what Alicia is abou t to tell him. She said
that she is late.
3. In the center you can see a naked woman or girl wit h a colored baby in her hands. Their eyes are big and both
look surprised. “Have Sex after drinking and you could be nursing more than a hangover” is writ t e n at the top. The
wor d “more” is significant ly prin t e d in big let t ers.
The UK govern m e n t wants to say that having sex after drinking can lead to pregnancy. The way the woman in the
cartoon and the baby look at each other means that unwan te d pregnancy of ten happens after being drunk and
having sex. The cartoo n is a warning for young people.

2. The excerp t from the novel 'Slam' by Nick Hornby is about Sam experiencing his 16th birth day. It tries to express
the feelings of unwan t e d pregnancy.
On the mornin g of Sam's 16th birt h day, he receives a message fro m Alicia, a friend of his'. Slightly panicking when
reading throu g h it, he answers that he does not have any time to meet her. Alicia insists on it by texting him that
they need to meet at Starbuck's at 11am. Fright ene d, he goes to his mum and tells her that he loves her. Thinking
about how he could apologize to her later, he leaves the house and arrives at Starbuck's. He sees Alicia wit h a pale
and a frigh t e ne d look on her face, which makes him try to avoid her by buying a drink. After waiting for other cus tom ers to finish and finally get t i ng himself a drink, he goes on wit h greeting her. She wishes him a happy birt h day
and says that she is late.
3. In the foregro u n d of the cartoon there is a naked wo man holding a baby. Both look at each other like they were
surprise and/or stunned. Above them and at the top of the cartoon there is the slogan 'Have Sex after drinking
and you could be nursing MORE than a hangover'. On the right hand side of the wo man, in the bot t o m corner,
there is the title 'SEX' wit h the question 'Are you thinking about it enough?' follo we d by a short paragraph about a
hotline you can call to ask abou t sex.
I think the cart oon is a big fat exclamation mark for teens (girls), who like to much alcohol - so much that they do
not even care anymo re what they do or are going to do, until they wake up. It tries to make teenagers think seri ous about e.g. binge drinking, coitus and resulting pregnancy. They should not overdo and find themselves in the
same situation as the surprised woman holding that baby. Fittingly, the message 'Have SEX..' describes what migh t
happen and since the cartoo n (as men ti o ne d in the assignmen t) is placed in several teen magazines, there is no
doub t that it migh t already have worked.

The excerp t starts wit h Sam's sixteen t h birt h day. After breakfast wit h his mum he receives a text message fro m a
girl named Alicia. She writ es that she need to see him urgen tly. Then he starts to has panic, but the panic actually
has never stopped since the day when he had not put anything on. He wri tes a text message back that he cannot
come this day because of his birt h day, but he knows if she writes back then he is in trou ble. Then he receives an other text message from her which says that they will meet at Starbuck's. He just writes "OK" and goes back to his
mum. He wishes that he was not fif teen or sixteen years old at the mom en t but three or four. And he also starts
prom ising things to god. When he sees Alicia he starts to think about other things, but then she says that she is
late.

called Sam, whose girlf rien d seems to be pregnan t.
The story starts wit h Sam's 16th birt h day and a breakfast wit h his mum, when a massage fro m Alicia comes in. In
her massage to him Alicia says that she needs to see Sam. Sam panics, because he imagines what Alicia could be go ing to tell him. Because Sam does not want to see his mum with which person he texts, Sam locks himself in the
bathro o m and texts back that he has no time, because of his birth day. But Sam gets the answer that Alicia wants
to meet at Starbuck's. Sam agrees. Before Sam goes to Starbuck's he turns back to the kitchen and his mum. There
Sam has more ideas abou t what Alicia could tell him. When Sam enters Starbuck's he sees Alicia. Sams does not
greet her straigh t away, instead he thinks of other things Alicia could tell him and spends as much time as possible
in the queue. When Sam finally swallowed his fear and he also has no other choice he turns to Alicia wit h a hello.
Alicia congrat ula tes him to his birt h day and reveals to him that her period has not started yet.

directly what she wants to tell him and that his intui ti o n was righ t. And the first mom en t he does not want to
meet Alicia, but he knows that he has to, so he agrees. He thinks abou t deals he could make with his mum if she
finds out what has happened. He thinks that he has to give up all the things that are fun to him and that sex will
never be a part of his life again. Before the date, Sam is afraid and feels like a little boy, because he is not sure if he
can handle a situation like this. When he arrives at Starbucks', the place where they want to meet, he sees Alicia,
but he does not go to her. He first walks to the queue to buy himself a drink, because he does not want his old life
to end. After get t i ng his drink he goes to Alicia. She wishes him a happy birt h day and then just says that she is late.
In this novel Nick Hornby shows what could happen if you are not careful while having sex.
3. The pictures wit h the title “have SEX after drinking and you could be nursing MORE than a hangover” from the UK
govern m e n t . Which was placed in dif f eren t teen magazines shows in the middle a young and naked woman, who
is holding a lit tle baby in her arms. Both of them, the baby and the woman are looking very confused like they do
not know what to do next. At the bot t o m on the right hand side it is writ t e n under the title “sex - are you thinking
about it enough?” that if you are under eighteen years and you want to have or need an advice abou t sex or con tracep ti o n you can call the num ber 0800 28 29 30 or visit their website. The text perfec tly fits to the woman wit h
the baby, because she looks at the baby like she does not know what to do with it. The picture is an adver t which
the UK govern m en t placed in dif f eren t teen magazines, to show young woman what could happen if they do not
think enough about sex. But it is also an appeal to the young men, because they because they are just as responsi ble for dealing responsibly wit h it, because at the end they also have to live wit h the consequences.

experiences his 16th birt h day.
First he and his Mum enjoy themselves.
But finally he receives a text- message from a girl named Alicia, who wants to see him. Sam feels uneasy when he
reads her message, so he texts back that he cannot see her this day because it is his birt h day.
Alicia insists that he comes and so he meets her at Starbuck’s, a café.
While he thinks about what could be the reason why she wants to talk to him, he wishes to be a little boy again
and he also thinks that sex is over for him; at this momen t he knows that he is never going to have sex again!
His body shows his fear when he arrives at the café and when he sees a Alicia he still hopes that there is no big
proble m and that it has not hin g to do wit h him.
He says hi to her and all she does is to congrat ulate him and say that she is late.
The author writ es about the feelings of a teenage boy at his 16th birth day and also about his longings, fears,
though ts and prom ises but at the end of the excerp t we still do not know what the proble m is.

The title is ’’Have sex after drinking alcohol could be nursing more than a hangover’’. I think the autho r wants to
say that it is not a good idea to have sex wit h somebo d y after drinking alcohol. Because mostly you do not really
know what you are doing when you are drunk so maybe you forge t to use a condo m.
And most of the adolescents are not ready to become mo the rs or fathers, because inside them they are also child like.
And a hangover lasts for one day but if you have a baby you do not have it for just one day. It is a really big respon sibility to take care of a baby.
This cartoo n is a warning for everyone, but especially for the youth: You bet te r not have sex wit h somebo d y when
you are drunk because it could have very dif f icul t and bad consequences and it could change your whole life a lot!

how he prepares himself for an impo r t an t date in the morning where he is told that his girlf rien d is pregnan t.
First, Sam and his mot he r are alone at home and celebrate his 16th birt h day a little. But then Sam receives a text
message from his girlf rien d Alicia where she tells him that she wants to see him this morning. This message makes
Sam panic- stricken and frigh t e ne d and after prom ising Alicia to see her he goes to his mum to tell her that he
loves her bef ore it is too late. When he gets on his way to Starbuck’s where Alicia wants to see him he imagines the
things he would do if Alicia told him everyt hin g was okay and she was not pregnan t. Upon entering Starbuck’s,
Sam sees the bad looking Alicia. Theref ore he tries to find other reasons for her looking and by these means to
calm himself down. In order to delay that his life will change dramatically if Alicia told him she was pregnan t he
first buys himself a drink. Waiting for his Frappuccino he feels sick and wants to spend as much time as he can be fore he has to talk to his girlf rien d. But when he is offered his drink there is finally no other oppo r t u n i t y so he says
hello to her and she tells him that her period is late and consequen tl y she is pregnan t.
To sum it up the autho r describes the though ts of a teenager on the day he is told he is becoming a father.
3. The poster is an advert published by the UK govern m en t. What catches the eye first is a naked woman holding a

baby who is also naked in her arms. They bot h look a little bit shocked and scared which is mostly recognizable be cause of their really big eyes. The slogan on top of the poster says: “Have sex after drinking and you could become
nursing more than a hangover.” In the bot t o m righ t hand corner you see infor ma ti o n about phone num be rs to
call when you need tips abou t sex and cont racep t i o n. Because this advert was published in some teen magazines it
should be a warning for kids or teenagers to always have safer sex even if you drank something. Referring to this
the slogan underlines the poster’s meaning by telling the reader or observer that you have to care for a baby if
you are pregnan t. This brings a lot of responsibility about it and maybe you canno t figh t that. Further m o r e the in tenti o n of the poster could be that you should not have sex when you are drunk because you canno t imagine all
the consequences of your behavior In that case you migh t end up saying “Nothing is going to happen, we don’t
need cont racep t i o n.” and at the worst you or your sex partner is pregnan t and you have to deal wit h it.
To conclude the poster wants teenagers to always have safer sex and by giving phone service num be rs it wants
them to get themselves help if somet hing happened or they need advice.

2. The short part of t he novel „Slam“ writ t e n by Nick Hornby is about a teenager, Sam, who talks abou t his six teent h birt h day and thinks about a girl, Alicia.
In the first part of t he text (I think up to line 37) Sam only talks abou t his birt h day, what he is offere d and does in
the mornin g. But he says, too that he does not want to be sixteen on this birth day, no, he wants to be three or
four because he wants to be too young to make any kind of a mess. In bet ween the time when he talks about the
morning of his birt h day, he texts wit h Alicia via mobile phone. The conten t of these text messages leads to the
poin t that Sam has to see Alicia at Starbuck‘s. When Sam arrives at Starbuck‘s he sees Alicia with a „pale and frigh t ened“ face. He thinks a lot about what could happen to Alicia while he stands in a queue to buy himself a drink. Af ter he has bough t himself a drink, he ends up talking with Alicia about her proble ms, like you could see in the pic ture below the text, but Alicia and Sam do not talk as much because the text ends after Alicia says happy birt h day
and that she is late.
3. In the pict ure, which is an advert of t he UK govern m e n t and placed in differen t teen magazines, you see in the
middle of it a girl or a wo man who holds a baby in her arms. They bot h look confused so I think the girl or woman
is a bit surprised of hold this lit tle baby in her arms, but the baby is not less surprised. At the top of this picture it
is writ t e n that having sex after drinking could make you nursing more than a hangover. I think this advert by the
UK govern m e n t appeals to teenagers to be careful with drinking drinking alcohol or other things and having sex
after it because it could be that girls at the age of 15 or 16 or … could have an unwan te d baby and at this age it is
not very good to have a baby because you have to go to school and no time for the baby. So the main meaning of
this adver t is: „Be careful wit h drinking and sex at the same time!“ I think.

is going to be a father on his 16th birt h day.
While Sam is having breakfast wit h his mot her he receives a message fro m Alicia. She needs to meet him. Sam pan ics because he can guess why she wants to talk wit h him. He still regrets that he has had sex wit ho u t cont racep tion. The boy tries to refuse the encoun t e r but she remarks that they have to see and she suggests meeting at
Starbuck’s at 11 am’. Now Sam is sure that his apprehension is right. Before the encoun te r Sam is scared of not be ing able to handle the situation he is in and he is afraid of telling his mo the r about it.
On his way to Starbuck’s he tries to make deals wit h himself about all the things he would abstain fro m if his ap prehension was wrong. As he sees Alicia he tries to delay meeting her but when he sit down next to Alicia she final ly tells him that her period did not came in time and that she supposes that she is pregnan t.
3. In the pict ure you can see a text in the backgrou n d stating “Have sex after drinking and you could be nursing
more than a hangover”. In the foregro u n d you can see a naked young woman holding a baby in her hands. They
bot h look quite surprised at each other even scared. The young wo man seems not to know what to do with the
child.
In my opinion the pict ure should help young people to understand that their activities migh t have consequences
they cannot deal wit h. Contracep t i o n and taking responsibili ty for yourself is the only way to pro tec t you fro m dis eases and fro m taking responsibili t y for other people like a baby. Young people destroy their children’s lives be cause they just cannot take the responsibilit y because they are still children, too.

more than a hangover“.
First on the top of the pict ure it is wri t t e n that if you have sex after drinking and you could be nursing more than
a hangover. At the bot t o m of the picture you can see a naked woman. She holds a baby in her arms. Both look
shocked.
I think the statemen t „ Have sex after drinking and you could be nursing more than a hangover“ should mean that
if you are not a careful teenager and go to a party and you drink too much that you can lose your contr ol and
have sex and forge t to cont racep t. So you only not have to nurse a hangover but the consequences could be that
you had unpro t ec t e d sex and maybe a baby.
I think this cartoo n is especially addressed to teenagers. In additio n to this I think it is a good idea to published this
cartoon in teen magazines. Many teenagers drink a lot on parties and after that they have more proble ms like be
pregnan t. Because of drinking a lot they of ten are not careful and forgo t to cont racep t e d.
Further m o r e it is a good idea to publish this cartoon in teen magazines because many teens read it and most of
them can be involved by this proble m. So because of this cartoon many teenager think abou t this topic and can
think about what they want and whe t he r the will be careful.
Considering all these points I draw the conclusion that everyone should be careful by having unpro t ec t e d sex
when you drink a lot.

message.
The name of the boy is Sam, it is his 16th birt h day. In the morning is everyt hin g perfect. His mo t her makes the
breakfast and Sam opens his presents. Af ter that the sixteen- year- old boy receives a text message from his girl friend Alicia. She writ es that she needs Sam urgen tly. Sam is really shocked. She wri tes her a message back, in
which she writ es that it is his birt h day and that he can not come. Sam is still very nervous and panicking. Then Ali cia wri tes a next message, indicating the place where she wants to see Sam.
Sam can not cont r ol his body, he is too nervous. He says to his mum that he loves her. He thinks that his mo the r
will not say it for a long time, after Alicia tells Sam what has happened.
The teenager thinks about how his mot he r will punish him. Because he thinks he has done.
Then he thinks what it would be like if it was not as awful as that. He considers that Alicia's bro t he r migh t be in
trou ble or somet hing like this.
Before Sam meets Alicia he buys himself a drink. He hopes that the time stops, but the time does not stop. In the
end there is no other way than going to Alicia. Sam greets Alicia. Alicia congratulates Sam for his birt h day, and tells
him that she does not get her period.
3. This is a cartoon which was placed in dif f eren t teen magazines. The title of the cartoon is "Have SEX of ter drink ing and you could be nursing more than a hangover".
It shows a naked wo man wit h a baby in her arms.
The baby is also naked. The baby and the girl look shocked. I think it should show that many bad things happen if
teenagers drink too much. The girls who sees this in a magazine will not think that it is a nice situation.
The wo man on the cart oon is young, maybe a teenager. She does not wish for this baby. We can see this in her ex pression. It could be that she drank too much, had Sex with a boy but did not think about cont racep t i o n. The
proble m is that it happens so of ten. Teenagers drink too much and have sex. I think this picture should show that
it is not cool if you do not know what you do. It should show that is not always so funny to forge t the contracep tion. The teenager who reads the magazine and sees this cartoon should understan d that and be a bit shocked.
Maybe they understand that they can destroy their life, if they forge t the contracep ti o n in one evening.
They should think that they do not drink as much as that they are pregnan t suddenly.

and tells him that her perio d is late.
3. This adver tisemen t, which was placed in dif f eren t teen magazines by the United Kingdo m’s govern m en t shows
two people: a naked woman wit h short blond hair and light skin and a lilac baby that she is holding in her hands.
Those two people are in the foregr ou n d. At the top of the advert it is writ t e n “Have Sex after drinking and you
could be nursing more than a hangover” on a whi te and dark backgroun d. At the righ t corner of the bot t o m there
is a box wit h data about who to call for data about sex.
In my opinion it is an adver t that should warn about the consequences of having sex after drinking alcohol.
The mo t her, who seems to be really young and the baby look curiously at each other.
The mot he r does not seem to be able to handle the situation to have a baby, because this baby seems to be hers
and not have been planned. It may also tell abou t the danger for children, if there is any alcohol consum p t i o n
while pregnancy.
This could be the meaning of the skin color of the baby. Another reason for the skin color could be that the gov ernmen t wants to make the wo man’s or girl’s situation clear. She may not know who the father is and the man
who is the baby’s father may have had a one- nigh t – s t a n d with the wom e n and they may have forgo t t e n to have
safer sex.
