INTERNATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION Law Students’ Magna Carta Writing Competition In recognition of the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta, the President of the International Bar Association and the Law Students’ Committee of the IBA invite law students from around the world to participate in the Magna Carta Writing Competition. The IBA Law Students’ Magna Carta Writing Competition awards the following: • Waived registration fee to the 2015 Annual Conference, Vienna • A contribution towards travel costs to attend the Annual Conference in Vienna • A contribution towards accommodation costs while attending the Annual Conference in Vienna • Two years’ free membership of the International Bar Association Law Students’ Committee • Winning essay will be published by the IBA TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF WRITING COMPETITION PARTICIPATION: Note: Employees of the IBA, Officers of any IBA Committee, and winners of any previous LPD/ SPPI Scholarships are excluded from this competition. The writing competition is open to persons who meet the following criteria: 1. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a law studies programme towards their first degree. 2. Age eligibility: applications will be accepted from students up to the age of 30. 3. IBA membership is not required in order to submit your essay. 4. Essay and supporting application form must be completed in English. 5. Each participant may only submit one essay/application. 6. Essay and application must be submitted and received by the IBA on or before Sunday 31 May 2015. 7. Essays submitted must be original, independent, unpublished works. Co-authored essays will not be considered. They must not be under consideration for any commercial contract by a publishing house. By participating in this writing competition the author is warranting his or her unrestricted copyright to the essay submitted to the IBA. 8. The IBA holds the right to publish any selection of the papers submitted to this competition, including, but not limited to, the winning paper (either the full texts or extracts thereof) up to 18 months after the competition has ended; this includes, but is not limited to, the publication in the conference documentation and/or on the IBA website or any other IBA publication. In any event, the author will be indicated appropriately. 9. The judging panel of the writing competition will consist of the IBA President, SPPI Chair, the Law Students’ Committee Chair and the Past Justice of the South African Constitutional Court. They will judge the papers primarily on the basis of originality, style, logic, research and overall quality of content. Factors such as financial need and geographical diversity may also be considered. 10. The decision of the winning essay by the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the details of the decision. 11. The name of the winner of the writing competition and their essay will be published on the IBA Scholarship and Awards Webpage after all participants have been contacted and notified of the decision by the judging panel. 12. The winner of this competition may be asked to provide an additional biographical note, providing brief details of their legal studies and future professional appointments. 13. If you are named as the winner of this writing competition you may be asked to provide evidence of your enrolment in a current legal studies programme. 14. The International Bar Association, the judging panel, and the organisers of the writing competition are not responsible for the loss, damage or non-arrival of any application/essay, nor for any costs or expenses incurred in the preparation and submission of application/essay to this writing competition.
