Lesson Plan Lesson: ___Value of Money___ Length: ___20 minutes___ Age or Grade Level Intended: __2nd Grade__ Academic Standard(s): 2.5.12 Find the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars. Performance Objective(s): Given a set of coins, students will be able to correctly identify the amount 4 out of 5 times. Assessment: Worksheet (see attached) Advance Preparation by Teacher: Create worksheet (see attached) Create sheet of practice problems (see attached) See if corresponding teacher has play money for students to work with. o If the teacher does not have play money, have the students draw it on a piece of scrap paper. Procedure: Introduction/Motivation: How many of you like to spend money? o You need to be able to count money correctly in order to know if you are able to buy things. o We will practice how to count different amounts of money. Ask students how much each coin is worth. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Step-by-Step Plan: Pass out play money to students, or have them get out a scrap sheet of paper. On the blackboard, write out, in words, which coins the student need to count. a. Examples are on the attached sheet labeled “Practice Problems” Have a volunteer give the answer they came up with. a. If the student is incorrect, ask them to recount. i. While student is recounting, ask for another volunteer. After a student has correctly identified the amount of money, have the class help you count the amount aloud. After going through the practice problems, give the students a story problem (also on the attached sheet labeled “Practice Problems). a. For these problems, student will be given an amount of money and the price of an item. The students have to count the money and determine if they would have enough to purchase the item. Have a volunteer for each problem give the amount they came up with and their answer to whether or not they can purchase the item with the amount of money they have. Closure: Have the students do the worksheet as extra practice. o This worksheet is similar to the story problems.
