They are members of Trenton Children’s Chorus’s first satellite choir, launched this January. Today’s rehearsal begins with “Shosholoza,” a Ndebele folk song popularized in South Africa that conveys a message of hope and solidarity during times of hardship and distress. “Once the shock of having to speak another language is over, you’re going to get it,” says choir director Ruth-Noemi Belonni-Rosario, high-fiving students who sing out. “We want to teach music that is approachable,” Belonni-Rosario says. “Something that sounds a little like the radio, but meatier—music that will challenge them. This is not Taylor Swift. We want them to open their minds and their ears to new stuff and get them to use their bodies more. They’re great kids and they’re really working hard.” Using their bodies gets really complicated with the next song, “I’ll Think of You.” Students pair up to practice what can only be described as an extremely complicated pat-a-cake, executed while singing. Everyone is smiling and laughing. “I want to hear voices more than clapping,” calls out accompanist Jared Slaymaker. “I heard that some of you have been practicing. I want to see if you’ve got it.” “The kids are still getting to know us, and we are getting to know them,” continued on page 2 PAGE 2 UPBEAT TCC Launches New Choir at Rivera Middle School continued says Slaymaker. “They are a smart, eager and energetic bunch! One girl, after we challenged students to write a song, actually did write a song. The lyrics are awesome!” The TCC/Rivera School Choir is part of the Trenton Community Schools Initiative (TCSI) through a partnership with Mercer Street Friends. TCSI combines the resources, experience and expertise of non-profit organizations strategically positioned to improve educational outcomes for children in the Trenton Public School system. Rehearsal ends at 4:30. The students are still singing as they leave the classroom. ◆ SPRING 2016 • VOLUME 23 Trenton Children’s Chorus, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization From The Board FUTURE PLAN Over the next few years, TCC staff, trustees and volunteers will work together to fully realize the organization’s potential as a thriving cultural pulse point. While the mission, purpose, and core values of TCC remain the same, we aspire to achieve the following goals outlined in the organization’s Strategic Plan: • Reach greater numbers of students, especially those enrolled in Trenton Public Schools • Increase support for students who are struggling academically through TCC’s Learning Academy • Deepen choristers’ musical knowledge • Ensure that every child learns to respect self and others, work collaboratively with others, prize excellence and hard work, and feel proud of his or her achievements This work will require us to think deeply about the kind of space we need to house our work, the kinds of new programs and activities we offer to children in our community, and the ways we can work with other organizations and agencies in the greater Trenton community. We are excited by the challenges and possibilities of our future! ◆ Jessi Franko T he Trenton Children’s Chorus Board of Trustees is excited to announce the appointment of Linda Helm Krapf as the full-time Executive Director of TCC as of February 1, 2016. Linda has been serving as Interim Executive Manager since September, 2015. Over the past 30 years, Linda has provided executive leadership of local, regional and international non-profit programs and organizations. Her experience navigating the complex challenges facing today’s non-profit organizations makes her a Linda Helm Krapf valuable asset to TCC, as it seeks greater involvement in its community as a relevant and responsive change agent. Executive Artistic Director, Patricia Thel, who began a year’s leave of absence last July, has submitted her resignation to the TCC Board. We wish her well and want to formally acknowledge her exceptional service to the organization and children over the past five years. Patty brought our choristers to their current level of musical excellence. She will be much missed. Under Patty’s leadership, TCC doubled the number of children it served and the choirs reached unprecedented levels of musicianship, performing at the UN, the White House and the New Jersey Governor’s mansion, among many other venues. Patty Thel I’ve been to so many camps. I think I’ve been to camp most every year, and it’s been one of the best experiences of my life, especially High School Vocal Institute at Westminster Choir College. Vocal Institute is one of the most challenging places to be. The friendships, the bonds, the music you create—it’s hard work, but you come out changed. You learn about yourself and how to treat people. The teachers are so loving and helpful and accepting. No one is ever excluded. Camp helped me see who I am and get to the core, to become more socially aware of the things I say and do and conscious of other people’s feelings. Going to camp helped me become more loving and accepting. It was spiritual growth. Send a Child to Camp camp opportunities – like the Vocal Institute programs at Westminster – are made possible by generous support from the camps, and by YOU.
