Americanmilitaryoccupation,establishedtherightoftheUnited
Statesto"interveneforthepreservationofCubanindependence,the
maintenanceofagovernmentadequatefortheprotectionoflife,
property,andindividualliberty."Whileintendedtoguarantee
Americaninfluenceovertheinternalpoliticsoftheisland,Iargue
thatCubanpoliticalfactionsusedthethreatofinterventionfortheir
owngain,andthatthispatterncausedU.S.diplomatstogrow
disillusionedwiththePlattAmendment.
