WELCOME TO
PORT ELIOT
Welcome to the 12th Port Eliot Festival at St Germans, the latest in an intermittent but lengthy
line of festivals held on this beautiful site stretching back to 1981’s legendary Elephant Fayre.
Welcome back to the thousands of people who have joined us in previous years – we look
forward to bumping into you in the Boogie Round – and a warm Aloha to everyone attending
for the first time.
This year there is more happening than ever: walk alongside the estuary, up behind the
maze and into a peaceful garden where you will find our new spa and wellness area, Lark’s
Haven; beside the estuary you can relax in a wood-fired hot tub hosted by Kernow Springs;
our workshops programme has doubled in size; there is an exhibition by Noel Fielding
in the basement next to the Flower and Fodder show; in the Drawing Room there is an
installation by French fashion house Chloé and in the Big Dining Room a show by the doll
maker Leonidas. Polpo are cooking out of the Still Room in the House, Comins Tea Room are
in the Orangery and the Oyster Shack from Devon are in the Walled Garden; the Round Room
has a new science programme; and for the first time the Theatre of Fashion and Wardrobe
Department have their own sparkling stage and our most fashion-Forward venture yet, a
shop for emerging designers stocked to the brim with one-off clothes, bags, jewellery and all
manner of brilliant, mad and useful things for the weekend.
Of course the one person who is missing is the late Peregrine, Lord St Germans. Perry loved
Port Eliot and made it clear that he wanted this year’s festival to go ahead, with instructions
that it should be the best ever. So, we are more determined than ever that that is what it will
be. Without Peregrine’s generosity and sheer festival spirit there would have been no Port
Eliot Festival, no Elephant Fayre, and no electric cabling buried in the ground ready to be
tapped at any moment to power lighting rigs and sound systems just by opening a hatch
under a rhododendron bush. To Peregrine festivalling was a way of life; to welcome tens of
thousands of people onto your front lawn, however large, with a completely open mind is a
rare and special thing.
A few years ago Peregrine and I were sitting at the top of the site at midnight, hidden
behind a large row of bins, gazing out across the Park, festoon lights dotted away into the
distance, smoke rising from bonfires and hundreds of people laughing and dancing and
caught up in the magic that is Port Eliot. Peregrine turned to me and said,
“This is one of the happiest nights of my life.”

ALCOHOL You are permitted to bring your own
cup use this year by introducing a reusable
cup system at the bars. A one off fee of £1
is charged for your first cup, which covers
the cost of manufacture. You can exchange
it for a clean one every time you buy a drink,
but cups are washed and reused rather than
thrown away. When you’re finished you can
keep the cup as a souvenir. Please help
support us to keep the estate clean and green
with this system.
