II. INSPECTION
Inspecttheindoorareatodeterminewherefliesmaybedeveloping.Thisincludesareasthatmay
containmoistorganicfoodmaterialssuchasdrains,cracksinthefloorgrout,cracksinwallsor
baseboardareas,underequipment,garbagereceptaclesandunderbarareas.Extendyourinspection
outdoorstodetermineifflypopulationsarecomingfromdumpsterareasorplaceswhereorganic
materialshavebeenspilled.Determineifthefacilityismaintaininghighsanitationlevelsandmethods
ofcontrolareinplaceandinworkingorder.Ifitisanewaccount,reviewcurrentprogramswith
managementanddeterminelevelofsanitation.
III. IDENTIFICATIONOFFLYSPECIES
Commonfliesfoundincommercialfoodfacilitiesincludedrainflies,red-eyedfruitflies,blackfruitflies,
phoridfliesandhouseflies.
DrainFly(Psychodidae)
Drainflies(alsocalledmothflies)aresmall,dark,fuzzylookingflies.Theyare
weakfliers,andadultscanbeseenslowlyflyinginanerraticmannerforshort
distances.Duringthedayadultscanbefoundclingingtothesidesofshowers,
sinks,bathroomorkitchenwallsandotherroomsthatmaycontaindrains.At
nighttheybecomemoreactiveandhoverneardrainsandotherbreedingsites.
Theylaytheireggsinthegelatinousorganiclayerthataccumulatesontheside
ofdrains.Thedevelopinglarvaewillthenfeedonthatmaterial,growand
developintopupaandemergeasadultstostarttheprocessoveragain.Alifecycledevelopsin7-14
daysdependingonconditionsandtemperature.
Red-EyedFruitFly(Drosophilamelanogaster)
Themostcommonfruitfliesare1/4"smallfliesthatarepalebrownwith
distinctiveredeyes.Theyaremainlyknowntobeassociatedwith
fermentingvegetablesandfruits,butcanreproducefromalmostanywet
ormoistdecayingorganicmatterfoundinakitchen.Thismoistorganic
matteriscriticalinthedevelopmentoftheflylarvaeandisfoundinareas
includingtrashcans,drains,wetareasunderequipment,drippingpipes,theundersidesofrefrigerators
orbarareas,spilledsodaorbeer,cracksinwallsandfloorgrout.Theycandevelopinalmostanydamp
areawherefoodandorganicmattercanbuildup.Thekeytocontrolistoinspectandeliminateortreat
theresourcesites.Alifecycledevelopsin8-10daysdependingonconditionsandfoodsources.

BlackFruitFly(Drosophilarepleta)
Thisfruitflyspecieshasbeenreportedinmanycommercialkitchens.Ithasablackishbrownbody,
darkredeyes,darkerwingsandisslightlylargerthanthered-eyedfruitfly.Theadultflyusually
remainslongeronasurfacewhendisturbedanddoesn’tflyawayasreadilyasthered-eyedvariety.
Theseflieswilldevelopandfeedinmanyofthesameareasasthered-eyedspecies.Bothspeciesof
fruitflycanbefoundinthesamecommerciallocations,buttheadultsandmaggotscanbefoundin
differentlocations.Lifecyclerunsaboutthesameasthered-eyedspecies.
PhoridFly(Phoridae)
Thisisafamilyofverysmall(1/8")fliesthatresemblefruitflies.
Theyhaveacharacteristic“humpback”shapewhenviewedfrom
thesideandareusuallytantobrownwithdarkeyes.Theytendto
runacrossasurfacetoescaperatherthantakingimmediateflight.
Phoridflieswillfeedanddevelopinmoistdecayingmatterandcan
beconfusedwithfruitflies.Thereisalsoaconcernwiththeseflies'
abilitytotransmitgermsandbacteriaontofoodproducts.Phorid
fliescanalsobefoundinmortuaries,funeralhomesandhospitals.
Theirlifecyclescanrunfrom14-35days.
HouseFly(Muscadomestica)
Thisflyisgraytobrownincolorwithreddisheyesandwillhaveseveral
graystripesontheuppersideofthebody.Thehouseflyisprobablythe
mostcommonflyfoundinstructuresthroughouttheworld,especially
inalmostanystructurethathasgarbageorotherdecayingorganic
matter.Theyareveryattractedtogarbagecansanddumpstersandwill
easilyenterastructurefromanyopendoororwindow.Housefliescan
carryseriousdiseases.Theyhaveextremelyfastlifecyclesthatcancompletein5-7days.
OtherFlies
Otherpossiblefliescouldincludelittlehouseflies,blowflies,flesh
fliesandbottleflies,dependingonthetypeofdecayingorganic
material(food)foundinthecommerciallocation.
IV. SANITATION
Determinethelevelofsanitation.
Thefacilityshouldhavearegulardailycleaningscheduleofcleaning
countersandmoppingfloors.Duringcleaning,fooddebrisshouldnot
bewashedorallowedtocollectunderequipmentortables.Garbage
containersshouldhavelidsandplasticbaglinerswithlinersreplaced
dailyandremovedtooutsidereceptacles.Foodandliquidsshouldnot
beleftinopencontainersbutstoredincoolersorsealedcontainers.
V. EXCLUSION
Aircurtainsshouldbeinstalledoverdoorstohelpkeepfliesfrom
enteringwhendoorsareopened.Screeningshouldbeinplaceand
doorsandwindowsshouldremainclosed.Cracksandcrevicesshouldberepairedandsealedwhere
fooddebriscanaccumulatetopreventbreedingsites.Ontheexterior,dumpstersshouldhavelidsthat
closesecurelyandbeatleast100feetawayfrombuildingentries.

Createagraphofthefacilitythatdocumentstheinspectionandnotesin-placecontrolmeasuresas
wellasareasthatwillrequireimprovement.Noteareasthatmayneedmechanicalcontrolssuchasfly

VI. DETERMINATIONOFACONTROLPROGRAM,EQUIPMENT&
PRODUCT

Equipmentisavailableasaportablehose-foamingunitaswellasone-,
two-,four-andseven-gallonunits,somewithutilitycartsand
compressors.

Thespeciallydesignedtreatmentwandallowstheapplicatortostandwhiledirectingfoamintothe
drain,oritcanbeusedforsprayapplicationsintohard-to-reachareas.

treatments.
•Bac-Azap®:
Bac-Azapisnotacontrolproduct,butratheraspecialblendofbillionsof
microorganismsthatworktoconsumeorganicmatterindrainsandinother
areas.Bac-Azapisalsowellknownforitsodorcontrolabilities.The
microorganismsinBac-Azapareuniquelyformulatedtoworkinconjunctionwith
theNibor-Dcontrolproductwhenbothareappliedtodrains.
•FoamFresh™:
FoamFreshisalsonotacontrolproduct,butisabio-remedialodorcontrolfoamthat
eliminatesorganicodorsandremovesgreasebuild-upindrains.Itisperfectforallowingcustomersto
quicklytargetfiltharealikesinkdrains,barmats,mops,garbagecansandareasunderstainlesssteel
equipment.
Nibor-DTreatmentsforFliesinKitchenEnvironments
•Purposeoftreatment:
ThetreatmentallowstheNibor-Dtocoatorganicdebrisareasinwhichfliesmaybreedanddevelop.
TheNibor-Dwilldiffuseintotheslimecoatingofthedrain(theareawherethelarvae[maggots]are
feeding)andcontaminatetheirfoodsource,makingthefoodmaterialtoxictothelarvaeastheytryto
feed.Thisactionkillsthemandstopsthecontinuinglifecyclethatproducestheadultpopulations.This
treatmentalsoappliestocracksandcrevicesinwallsandtilegroutwhereorganicfoodparticlesmay
collect.

Nibor-DcanbecombinedwithDSVtogiveafastercontactkillforfliesindrains.Simplyadd2oz.of
DSVtotheNibor-Dsolution.Addanadditional2-3oz.ofProFoamPlatinumtothissolutiontogetthe

A15%solutionofNibor-Dcanbeappliedintocracksandcrevicesasfoamtotreatareaswheresmall
fliescandevelop.Dry(20:1)foammaybebetterintheseareastogetbackintothehorizontaland
verticalareaswherethefoodmaterialhasbeendeposited.Again,theNibor-Dtreatmentwilldiffuse
intothisfoodmaterial,creatingatoxicfoodsourceforthedevelopinglarvae,andprovidingalongtermcontrolmeasure.Remember,infoodareasthisisacrack
andcrevicetreatmentonly,soanytreatmentmaterialthat
staysonthesurfaceandisnotinthecrackorcrevicemustbe
cleanedup.
•Foamingintowallvoids,behindandunderequipment.
A15%solutionofNibor-Dcanbeappliedintowallsasfoam
forcontrolofdevelopingflypopulations.Again,theNibor-D
willtreatthefoodsourcesthatallowthedevelopmentoffly
populations.(Note:Thisapplicationwillalsocontrolcockroach
populationsthatmaybedevelopinginthewallarea.)
Note:Nibor-Dcanalsobeusedinconjunctionwithacontact
emulsifiableinsectadulticide.
•FoamingGarbageCansandDumpsters
Flypopulationscandevelopingarbagereceptaclessuchas
trashcansanddumpsters.Ifnotregularlycleanedortreated,
theseareasprovideenormouspotentialforflydevelopmentin
andaroundacommercialrestaurant.Garbagecansshould
haveplasticbagliners,butflyspeciescandevelopinthese
cansindoorswhereorganicdebrisandjuicescollectatthe
bottomofthecontainerifthelinersareruptured.Housefliescandevelopontheinteriorofoutside
dumpsterswheretheywillfeedanddevelopontheorganicdebrisandliquids,thenenterthebuilding
throughopendoorsorwindows.
Ifgarbagereceptaclescannotbewashedand
cleanedonaregularbasis,thena15%solution
foamorliquidtreatmentwithNibor-Dcanbe
usedtotreatandpenetratetheorganicfood
sourcesandcreateatoxicmixthatwillkillthe
developingpopulation.Forgarbagecans,install
plasticbaglinersafterthefoamhasdissipated.
TheNibor-Dprotectionwillremainuntilthe
receptacleisthoroughlywashedout.Keep
dumpstersawayfrombuildingsandnotina
directlineoutfromdoorsandwindows.

A15%Nibor-Dgallonsolutioncanbemixedwith1-2ouncesofProFoamPlatinumtocreateafoaming
treatment.Slightlywetterfoammaybebettertocoatthesidesandbottomorthedumpstertocoat
theorganicfoodsources.FoamwillhelpholdtheNibor-Donthesurfaceslongertogivebetter
penetrationintotheorganicmaterial.Applyataratenottoexceedtherateof12-20liquidouncesof
Nibor-Dper250squarefeetofdumpstersurface.A15%liquidNibor-Dspraycanalsobeusedforthe
treatment(nottoexceedtheapplicationrate).
Bac-AzapcanbemixedwithNibor-Dandfoamedorappliedasaliquidsprayintothedumpsterand
othergarbagereceptacles.TheNibor-Dwillstillcreateatoxicbaitofalltheorganicmaterialwhilethe
Bac-Azapwillbreakdownandconsumetheorganicmaterialandalsoreduceodorsintheselocations.
VII. SETTINGUPAFLYCONTROLPROGRAMINVOLVINGMANAGEMENT
Sanitationisthekeytoalong-termcontrolprogram.Workwiththemanagementofthefacilityto
createaprogramwheremanagementtrainspersonnelontheneedforgoodsanitationandcleaning
practicestohelpreduceflypopulations.Achecklisthelpstoeducateandremindmanagementand
staffaboutdailyprocedurestopreventflyproblems.
Thischecklistcanbepostedinstrategicareasofthe
facility.Anexamplereminderlistcouldinclude:
FlyPreventionProgramforEmployees
1.Keepdoorsandwindowsclosed.
2.Emptygarbagecontainersdailyanddeposit
materialsintoexteriordumpsters.
3.Washindoorgarbagecontainersdaily.
4.ApplyFoamFreshintoemptygarbagereceptacles
atclosing.
5.Mopfloorsandcleancountersandareasaround
dishwasherdaily.
6.Donotallowfooddebristoaccumulateunder
equipmentandcounters.
7.Storefoodandliquidsincoolersorsealedcontainers–donotleaveout.
8.Cleangreasespillagearoundgreasetrapsandexteriorgreasereceptacles.
9.SprayFoamFreshinsinkdrainsandonbarmatsatclosing.
Finally,provideareporttothefacilitymanagementbasedonserviceinspectiontomake
recommendationsonrepairofareasandtheprogressofthein-housesanitationprogram.

VIII. MONITORING,COMMUNICATIONANDFOLLOW-UP
Alwayskeepclosecommunicationwiththefacilitymanagementteamtomakesuresanitationand
otherin-housecontrolmeasuresarefollowed.Ifflyproblemspersist,re-inspecttodeterminemissed
harboragesitesandrevisitin-housecontrolprocedures,additionalexclusionrequirementsorother
potentials(forexample,flytrapscanhelptomonitoractivityafteryouhaveinitiatedacontrol
program).
Remember,successfulflycontrolinacommercialfoodfacilityinvolvesanumberofcontroland
preventionstrategiesthatincludeapartnershipbetweenthepestmanagementprofessionalandthe
managementofthefacility.Itisanongoingprocessthatwillcreateandmaintainahealthy
environment.
