BAGBY BANNER June 10, 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Bagby Barracuda Families, It’s so hard to believe that we are at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. In this second year for me at Bagby, I have particularly enjoyed becoming more familiar with staff and families. Most importantly, it has been a delight to see the development of the students. A school administrator I know once said that the best part of his job was getting to work with students over their time in elementary school. The students truly are the focus and highlight of all our efforts at Bagby. I count myself fortunate to be in a profession that is all about hope, potential, and growth. I am looking forward to a bit of a break in July, but I’m so excited for the launch of the 2015-2016 school year in August! I hope you all have a wonderful summer with our Bagby Barracudas! Honors to Bagby Employees- Three Bagby staff members have been honored recently for their amazing efforts on behalf of Bagby School. Barb Springett, School Secretary is Bagby’s Classified Employee of the Year. She was selected by her peers for outstanding work as our School Secretary. Barb has additionally been honored as Cambrian School District’s Classified Employee of the Year! We are delighted for Barb! Kristin Fery, 1st Grade, is Bagby’s Teacher of the Year! She was selected by her fellow teachers for her incredible professionalism and deep commitment to students. She has distinguished herself as a Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) lead teacher for Bagby. She is truly a resource to her students, families, and colleagues! Lisa Landsberg, 5th Grade, is a recipient of the Harriet Goldin Excellence in Education Award! She was one of only six educators in the South Bay to receive this award. Lisa has distinguished herself in many ways both in the classroom and as a teacher leader at Bagby and in the Cambrian School District community. We are fortunate to have these dedicated professionals at Bagby School! Bagby is seeking Noon Yard Duty helpers for next year! If you have availability at lunch time and are interested in helping us foster a positive school environment, please consider applying for a paid noon duty position. It’s a great way to get to know our many Bagby Barracudas! We’d love to include people who might enjoy coordinating games and activities while supervising our students. A key part of the role is being a resource when students need help resolving the typical conflicts that arise as students play. If you are interested in supporting all our Bagby students, please consider applying. Contact the office now or in early August so you can talk to Mrs. White. Combination Classes-As you know, Bagby often forms combination grade level classes when our numbers at a given grade are not sufficient to fill up a whole class. Combination classes are made up of two consecutive grade levels like 2nd/3rd or 4th/5th. Teachers are very thoughtful about recommending students for a combination class. I want to assure Bagby parents that the child’s current teacher, who has worked with them all year, is a key player in determining the appropriateness of a placement in a combination class. At Bagby, teachers who take on the responsibility of teaching a combination class demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues from both grades and do an outstanding job of making sure students in both grade levels meet or exceed grade level standards. Because these classes are filled with students who demonstrate responsible behavior, teachers are able to focus instructional time on learning. Bagby has had combination classes on a regular basis for many years. Our staff is experienced and know how to both teach and support colleagues who have combination classes. Students in combination classes develop leadership skills and truly benefit from the multiage environment. New Gates- Our fencing project will be wrapping up soon! We are looking forward to the completed installation of all the gates. I will be sending more information out in August so that you are aware of times the gates will be unlocked. Because Bagby is formally in session from 8:20-2:45, we anticipate the gates being unlocked from 2:45p.m. after school until approximately 8:30a.m. the next morning. The purpose of the gates is to limit access to the school grounds while school is in session. We thank you in advance for your cooperation! Certainly, not least, a HUGE Thank you to our amazing parents for all the support during Teacher Appreciation week. Tracy Bozzo coordinated a roster of awesome parents who covered yard duty AND parking lot duty. All of this support is very much appreciated by all of our staff. THANK YOU TO ALL from our teachers. Here at Bagby we are lucky to have such a dedicated group of parent volunteers! As Home and School Club President I feel very fortunate to be a part of a community that is so generous, both financially and with your time. Your financial donations funded a wide variety of field trips and assemblies, much needed classroom supplies, the AR program, library services, educational subscriptions, Field Day and much more! By giving your time you helped bring our students events including Halloween Fun Night, the Father Daughter Dance, Activity Day, and Mother Son Picnic and worthwhile programs including the Bagby Garden, Mileage Club, Project Cornerstone and Art Vistas. None of these things would happen without you! It's because of you that we are able to support and enrich the experience of each and every student here at Bagby. Thank you!! Have a wonderful summer and we will see you next year!! Jill Brigham Home and School Club President SPECIAL THANKS The Home and School Club would like to thank all of the 5th grade parents that are exiting Bagby this year for everything that you have done to make Bagby a better place. Special thanks to Tracey Barba, Kerry Carey, Vickie and Jim Carpeneti, North Grueskin, Kirk and Kate Knudsen, Robyn Kubo-Manely, Cathy Valenzuela and Tammy Wilson. We will miss you!! The kids were so happy planting and watering! Thank you for making this happen for them! All summer volunteer slots are filled!! THANK YOU FROM THE MOTHER & SON COMMITTEE This year we had ~200 guests and were able to keep the food lines moving quickly thanks to the Dynamic Duo on the BBQ. Dodgeball was a huge “hit” again and we were rather impressed on how many moms took the dunk tank challenge. As with all of the events at Bagby, it is impossible to run without dedicated volunteers. A special thank you to the following folks for their help. Scott Hernandez Ken Lee Todd Di Salvo Daniel Miakotkin Gordon Minami Eduardo Medina Steve Hawkins Jason Agnoletti Make someone’s day, VOLUNTEER! Thank you moms for all you do for our sons each and every day. Jeff Lowery and Brian Tanger MILEAGE CLUB Alexander Anthony (1st grader) completed 50 miles. Logan ran 177 miles, Matthew ran 152 miles, and James ran 101 miles this year. Congratulations to Audrey Yang for running 50 miles during Mileage Club this year! Audrey is pictured below with your grandmother, Judy Li, who has helped every day at Mileage Club this year. Thank you Judy! Mileage Club news Congratulations to Audrey Yang, Samantha Collins and Marissa Marcus for recently completing 50 miles at Mileage Club! Congratulations to Noah Finch (5th grade, Mrs. J. Smith) and James Lee (3rd grade, Mrs. Hamilton) for reaching 100 miles on June 1st! This year we have 5 students who have run 100 miles or more. They will receive their Mileage Club trophy next week before Field Day! It was an exciting day at Mileage Club because Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. J. Smith, and their classes came out to cheer on Noah and James as they ran their 100th lap! I would like to thank our Mileage Club volunteers this year. Mileage Club is run totally by parent volunteers, so without their help, the program would not be possible. We had a great group of parents who were fun, enthusiastic, and dedicated. Many thanks to: Dolores Hill, Judy Li, Sigal Marash, Sam Konda, Larissa Marocco, Matt Sparks, Kevin Paskett, Gloria Avila, Peter Hammack, Tom Vo, Jennifer Lee, Jae Lee, Loubelle Bourdon, Kaori Sasano, Aer Lee, Renee Eby, and Dusta and Jeff Eisenman. As you can see, it takes many volunteers to make Mileage Club run smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering next year, or in the Mileage Club Chair position (as next year will be my last at Bagby), feel free to contact me. Thank you, Sue Ann Lee Mileage Club Chair
