Groundwater Dewatering and Erosion/Sediment Control Plan

Groundwater Dewatering and Erosion/Sediment
Control Plan, Central Artery Tunnel
Walsh Construction Company of Illinois, Boston, Massachusetts
GEI prepared a
groundwater dewatering
and erosion/sediment
control plan submittal
for a major construction
company client at a
Central Artery Tunnel
(CA/T) ventilation
building.
The erosion and sediment control
consisted of:
• Sedimentation systems
for storm water runoff and
groundwater pumped from
within the excavation
• Silt fencing to protect the
planned adjacent railroad
ballast
• Silt fencing and hay bales
along the Charles River,
• A wheel wash station
The groundwater control plan
consisted of sheet pile cutoffs
of groundwater flows in upper
pervious fill and sediment layers,
shallow well dewatering within
the cutoff area, and use of one
existing deep pump to prevent
potential hydrostatic uplift on the
lower clay layer. The groundwater
dewatering design made use
of existing resources to minimize
cost to the contractor.
