The early years of John Lennon Artist Sam Taylor Wood’s directorial debut follows the turbulent life of 15 year-old John Lennon (remarkable newcomer Aaron Johnson) on the cusp of forming the Beatles. Taylor Wood’s direction and Matt Greenhalgh’s witty script elicit fine performances from Kristen Scott Thomas (‘I’ve Loved You So Long’) as Lennon’s domineering Aunt, and Anne-Marie Duff (‘Is Anybody There?’) as his mother. Andy Serkis (‘King Kong’, ’The Prestige’), pulls no punches in portraying Dury as a complex and contradictory character. A beloved novel finally reaches the screen Peter Jackson (‘Heavenly Creatures’, ‘Lord Of The Rings’) wisely retains the subtlety of Alice Sebold’s heartbreaking bestseller. Saoirse Ronan (‘Atonement’) plays 14-year-old Susie Salmon, the victim of a serial killer, who watches from heaven as her parents and the investigating detective come to terms with their grief. How sport helped heal a country Clint Eastwood tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman, ‘The Dark Knight’) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon, ‘The Informant’), to help unite their country. S tar vehicles are not dissimilar to London buses. You spend the whole blockbuster season waiting for a decent performance (Heath Ledger’s maniacal Joker in ‘The Dark Night’ was a rare exception), only to find that during the awards season you’re spoilt for choice. First up is a bearded and bedraggled Viggo Mortensen in John Hillcoat’s take on that rarest of genres: the art house apocalypse movie. Making Roland Emmerich’s ‘2012’ look like a frolic in the theme park of global mayhem, ‘The Road’ is a bold and visionary take on Cormac McCarthy’s fable, which unfolds in the dying moments of our world. It also showcases an actor who has spent much of this decade honing his craft through a series of iconic performances, from Aragon in Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, to his disturbing portraits of the criminal underworld in David Cronenberg’s ‘A History of Violence’ and ‘Eastern Promises’. In ‘The Road’, Mortensen captures the essence of McCarthy’s last man of decency, foraging a decimated land for scraps of food with his young son, played by the equally impressive Kodi Smit-McPhee. No less hirsute is Benicio Del Toro in ‘The Wolfman’, Joe Jackson’s take on the lycan myth. The film is a stark contrast to the 1943 Universal version or the knockabout Abbot and Costello parodies that followed (both starring an arch Lon Chaney Jnr.). With his brooding looks and solemn, doleful eyes, Del Toro helps transform the film into a sweeping romantic drama, aided in no small part by Emily Blunt. Guaranteeing enough tension and gothic atmosphere to appeal to horror fans, the sparks flying between Blunt and Del Toro are also likely to make ‘The Wolfman’ a contender for one of the more original Valentine releases of recent years. Equally tortured is Colin Firth in the directorial debut of Gucci head and all-round 14 renaissance man, Tom Ford. Based on a Christopher Isherwood story, ‘A Single Man’ features Firth in a career best performance as an Ivy League professor struggling to come to terms with his sexuality in 1960s America. A devastating portrayal of guilt and sacrifice, the intensity of the British star’s award winning performance (Best Actor, Venice Film Festival 2009) is in stark contrast to Ford’s style, which employs a whole bag of cinematic tricks. In addition to the acclaim he has received for his visual mastery, Martin Scorsese has also elicited some great performances over the years (think Ray Liotta in ‘Goodfellas’, or Robert De Niro in almost everything the pair have done together). In ‘Shutter Island’, an adaptation of the novel by Dennis Lehane (‘Mystic River’ & ‘Gone Baby Gone’), Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo play two US Marshals in search of a missing woman at an asylum for the insane, located on an island off the Boston coast. Having given some of his best performances in previous Scorsese films, anticipation is high for DiCaprio’s role as a man descending into a disturbing, labyrinthine world, where reality and the nightmares of the inmates’ damaged psyches collide. And finally, perhaps mention should be made of Matt Damon. Following his comic portrayal of Mark Whitacre in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Informant!’, he is set to play South African rugby coach Francois Pienaar, who worked with Nelson Mandela to heal a troubled nation, in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Invictus’. He has also teamed up with Paul Greengrass (‘The Bourne Ultimatum’) again, playing a soldier embedded in the surreal world of Iraq’s ‘Green Zone’. Come Oscar time, he is likely to figure large with some of his best performances to date. But with such strong competition this season, who is likely to walk away with the Best Actor statuette is anyone’s guess. • hmvcurzon.com 15 Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Vision ‘The Lovely Bones’ sees Peter Jackson return to a more intimate form of storytelling, writes Mick McAloon. I n ‘The Lovely Bones’, a teenage girl looks down from heaven and tells the story of her own murder and its impact on her family. The film is based on Alice Sebold’s much loved, best-selling novel of 2002. Despite its dark subject, the book was a huge success, partly due to Sebold’s first-person narration: the tone was joyful and celebratory, while the unusual perspective, that of a spirited teenage voice speaking from beyond the grave, seemed to offer readers a measure of hope. That the book avoided the generic trappings of the average bestseller made its success all the more unusual. Sebold’s effortless fusion of literary styles (supernatural thriller; murder-mystery; family drama) and the fact that the book is inherently cinematic guaranteed its transfer to the big screen. So how will it fare? Films based on best-selling novels face a unique set of factors. On the plus side, they inherit a sizable audience. But this very same audience can assume the power of a million un-credited screenwriters, with each reader hoping that their vision of the book will make it to the screen. This is something that Peter Jackson understands. He has described his version as “…a very personal film, rather than [an] attempt to please everyone who enjoyed the book”. Sebold’s loyal readers will be pleased to hear that Jackson has retained the book’s famous opening lines. And we know that Jackson can do spectacular, so we can expect his vision of Susie’s heaven to be something special. He has a terrific cast (Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci), and in Saoirse Ronan, who plays Susie, Jackson seems to have found the movie’s guiding light. Following on from the epic scale of Jackson’s last four films — ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy and ‘King Kong’ — ‘The Lovely Bones’ might be considered something of a new departure. But those who followed his career in the 1990s might see it as a return to the kind of filmmaking that made his name. ‘Heavenly Creatures’ touched on similar themes (teenage friendship, elements of fantasy and murder), though from a wildly different perspective. However, the reduction in the scale of this project should not be seen as a lowering of artistic sights. Jackson’s ambition is still sky-high, his vision no less heavenly. • 16 hmvcurzon.com MOST Shockingly ORIGINAL provocative HORROR MOVIE and gruellingly OF THE YEAR ★★★★ violent SEAN O’HAGEN, THE GUARDIAN GUIDE KIM NEWMAN, EMPIRE BUY IT FROM 11TH JAN 2010 PRE ORDER ON AND EXCLUSIVE DVD INCLUDES 4 LTD EDITION ARTCARDS ONLY AT www.antichristthemovie.com film events film events DocDays presents It Might Get Loud hmvcurzon Screen Salon Tickets: £10.00/£8.00 Cineaste Tickets: £11.00/£9.00 Cineaste hmvcurzon brings you DocDays, a showcase of thought-provoking and entertaining documentaries, preceded by an introduction.
