AIMSweb testing on Tuesday, May 6.
Thanks for doing your best on the MAP test.
Now that we are finally through MAP testing, there will be no more Math Flash Card Logs, Math Weekly Reviews or weekly math fact practice packets.
There will be one more round of 5 minute fact quizzes before the end of school. Those kids that have become Math Masters will have a special reward party.
Please practice your math facts, especially if you have not earned recognition as a Math Master.
Fractions Unit
I can identify fractions of a whole and fractions of a set. I can add and subtract fractions with like denominators and unlike denominators. I can identify mixed
numbers and improper fractions. I can convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa.
Science News:
It's been tricky for us to keep a steady flow in this unit due to MAP testing and other scheduled events these last few weeks of school. We have been working on
force and motion and have explored friction, inertia, and the difference between mass and weight. We will work next week to explore Sir Isaac Newton's laws of
motion. We will be reviewing gravity and using spring scales to measure force in newtons. Next week we will not be switching on Tues. and Fri. due to GATES/AIMS
testing and the incentive bbq, and we will not switch on Field Day. As soon as a date is set for our summative, I will let you know. It will likely be on/near May
16th with retakes the following week.
Social Studies News:
We only had time for a little bit of Social Studies this week, and we read about those that settled in the Great Plains. Once California and Oregon started to fill up
with settlers there was a movement to settle in the plains states. The Homestead Act granted settlers with 160 acres of free land if they built a house on the plains
and occupied it for five years. We will be wrapping up our "Moving West" pockets soon, and we will be sending them home in a week or two.
