The Margaret L. White Scholarship was established at Ohio State University in 1943. The Margaret L.
White Scholarship (MLW) is named for the first President and Executive Secretary of Alpha Delta State who
was a student of Annie Webb Blanton. A supervisor of English in the Cleveland Schools, she was installed
as State President by Annie Webb Blanton and served from 1938 – 1940. This scholarship provides a stipend
for graduate work in education with the amount being dependent on length of the period of study and
university costs. The Scholarship Committee must follow specifications and requirements for selection and
notification of recipients as set forth in the scholarship agreement with The Ohio State University.
The Ruth Grimes Scholarship, established at Miami University, Oxford, in 1951, provides a stipend for
graduate work in education at Miami University. The Ruth Grimes Scholarship (RG) is named for Ruth
Grimes, who was a dedicated Treasurer of alpha Delta State from 1942 – 1951. She was recognized by the
Ohio Senate as an exceptional educator. The Scholarship Committee must follow specifications and
requirements for selection and notification of recipients as set forth in the scholarship agreement with the
Miami University.
The Annie Webb Blanton Scholarship, established in 1946, provides stipends for graduate study in
education at any accredited university. The Annie Webb Blanton (AWB) Scholarships honors the first
President of Delta Kappa Gamma, the first female State Superintendent of Education and the first female to
be elected to public office in the state of Texas. Amounts of awards vary, depending on the length of the
period of study, the degree, and university costs. The Blanton scholarship is supported from interest on
invested funds and current scholarships fees.
The Alpha Delta State Leadership Memorial Scholarship, established in 2007, provides stipends for
graduate study in education at any accredited university. Amounts of awards vary, depending on the length
of the period of study, the degree, and university costs. The State Leadership Memorial Scholarship is
supported from invested funds from a $35,000 initial investment. Applicants complete the same scholarship
application form used for the Annie Webb Blanton Scholarship, the Margaret L. White Scholarship, and/or
the Ruth Grimes Scholarship. The only additional requirement for the State Leadership Memorial
Scholarship is the attachment of a leadership resume, describing past and current leadership roles, positions
and responsibilities.
FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIPS
Applicants must be Delta Kappa Gamma members in good standing who have held membership in an Ohio
chapter for at least two years; must be pursuing graduate work in education in an approved university and
must meet entrance and grade point requirements of the graduate school; applicants for the White and
Grimes scholarships must meet also any additional specifications of the university as set forth in the
scholarship agreement with the university; and must meet reasonable standards as far as personality,
scholarship, professional services, and other evidences of potentialities for future service to the Society and
the educational profession are concerned. Importance is attached to the contributions of the candidate to
Delta Kappa Gamma and to education.
PROCEDURES
The candidate for an Alpha Delta State scholarship should direct inquires to the Scholarship and Grants
Committee Chairman. Presently, application materials are available on the Alpha Delta State Scholarship
and Grants Committee webpage at http://alphadeltastate.weebly.com/scholarship--grant.html. Applications
are due February 1. A recipient shall receive not more than one Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship at one
time. Announcement of stipends granted is made at the state convention. Recipients may use their stipends
no earlier than the summer term after the state convention. Immediately following the completion of her
work, a scholarship recipient shall prepare and send to the editor of the Voice an article describing her study
and achievements while using the scholarship.
Awards from the Margaret L. White and the Ruth Grimes Scholarships are paid directly by the university.
The Scholarship Chairman works with the university representatives to ensure necessary paperwork is
received. The Annie Webb Blanton Scholarships are paid directly to recipients. The first procedure for the
Blanton Scholarships is to receive a voucher from the Scholarship Chairman. Upon verification of
enrollment, such as a receipt, a schedule of classes, or a transcript, the recipient will mail the completed
voucher and evidence to the Scholarship Chairman after July 1st. Recipients may submit paperwork before
completing their coursework. Once approved, the chairman sends the paperwork to the President for
approval. Lastly, the paperwork is sent to the Treasurer who verifies the accuracy and then sends a check
directly to the recipient.
