Elevator Speech Contest
Overview



The “elevator speech” contest will be performed on a public stage and evaluated by a
panel of judges. Your performance will be judged on how do you use your time (1minute maximum before the elevator doors close), how interesting and engaging are
you, and how much do judges remember you after exiting the elevator.
The Elevator Speech Competition will take place during the Student Achievement
Conference in BN 100 @1 :00 pm -2:00 pm
You will be summarizing your oral or poster presentation in 60 seconds.
Mission

This contest mission is to encourage students improve their communication and public
speaking skills needed to present an idea in a brief, clear, and exciting way by explaining
why their idea is unique and important and what the impact will be if they implement it.
Goals of the Contest:




Stimulate a culture of innovation ;
Emphasize the value of oral communication and public speaking;
Teach students to be concise and persuasive;
Provide an opportunity to demonstrate good performance under pressure;
Presentation Content


Speaker will perform a 60-second brief and clear summary of his/her oral or poster
presentation that he/she has submitted to the Student Achievement Conference.
Speaker should have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion and does not stray from
the topic.
General Guidelines for the Contest:


Elevator pitch competition is open to all students who present at the Student
Achievement Conference.
The top three presenters will be awarded.
Contest Prizes



First place $40 gift card from BSU bookstore
Second place $25 gift card from BSU bookstore
Third place $15 gift card from BSU bookstore
Elevator Pitch Contest Rules:






The speech duration must be no longer than 60 seconds. Time begins when the presenter
begins speaking.
No visual aids, index cards, slides, or props may be used during the pitch.
There will be no question and answer period following the pitches.
Presenter must be physically present and give the elevator pitch live, in person. The
winners must also be present to claim their prizes.
Presenters will be scheduled to present in random order. A list with the presentation order
will be generated on the day of the event.
Contestants should consider the overall presentation including content, delivery, and
audience impact.
Scoring Criteria
Organization / Content
Speaker has a clear introduction, body, and conclusion and does not stray
from the topic

Delivery: Tone, Volume, Eye Contact, Speech Habits
Speaker is both mature and sincere and approaches the speech in a
professional manner

Speaker connects with the attendees through natural and sufficient eye
contact
Speaker does not cause distractions or use poor speech etiquette
(chewing gum, “um,” “like,” fidgeting)
Speaker connect with audience with open body language & comfortable
gestures
Speaker has an engaging skills for the overall verbal and noun verbal
communication
Timing
Speaker finished his/her presentation within time limit (60 sec)
