Christmas Eve Day Luncheon
New Years Party
Editor: Diane Alba-Means
Marketing Director
Every Christmas I would get new Ice Skates. All
Christmas presents were opened Christmas
morning, except we were permitted to open new
skates on Christmas Eve. Probably, because the ice
skating rink was one of the few places open on
Christmas Eve and our parents needed us out of the
house with all that pent-up anticipation! One
Christmas, I was so excited about my new skates
(with homemade pompom on the toes) that I walked
around the kitchen in them. And before my mom caught me, the
blades made deep cuts in the linoleum floor. That was not a happy
Christmas. It was several years before she could afford to buy new
linoleum, and when I was misbehaving all she had to do was look at
the cuts in the floor, and then look sadly at me; and that would be
enough to prompt immediate improvement in my behavior.
Some years, the weather would cooperate and we would have a long
cold spell. The lake would freeze over; we could skate, ice fish out on
the lake, look right down through the ice to see the sandy bottom with
the empty soda bottles and fishing lures dropped from boats in the
summer.
I bet you didn’t know we invented
kiteboarding! Here is a picture of
some intrepid skate kiters using
their mom’s old sheets and some
brooms to get pulled across the
lake by the wind. The temperature
is probably a brisk -20 below.
They don’t know they only have
to fly 5,000 miles to Maui and
they could do this in sunshine and
wearing shorts!
Maui is the best present, whether it’s for Christmas, or for Hanukkah,
which starts December 6th this Year.
Happy Holidays to you all, Steve Hansen, General Manager

Picnic for Poki Special Guest : Na Leo Lani O Maui Choir
Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to a Picnic for Poki at 11:00 AM at the Historic
Kaahumanu Church in Wailuku Town,103 South High Street on Thursday, December 17, 2015. Our featured
guest with live entertainment will be Na Leo Lani O Maui, a community choir under the direction of Gale
Wisehart and Uluwehi Guerrero. The choir will
sing Hawaiian and Christmas favorites. Since its
inception in 2007, the choir has performed for
many venues on Maui. The mission of Na Leo Lani
O Maui, in partnership with Halau Hula
Kauluokala, is to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture
and language through the gift of song and dance,
and to share these gifts with the community.
Bring your lunch with you and enjoy coffee and
fresh baked cookies from Roselani Place. Relax
under the monkey pod tree for an hour or so at this
free event, which is open to the public.
Do You Remember?
December, for most of us in Hawaii, starts out with
us remembering the surprise attack by the Japanese Imperial Navy on Pearl Harbor on
December 7, 1941. President Roosevelt called it “A day that will live in infamy.” 2,402
persons died in the attack and 1,282 were wounded. It propelled the U. S. into WWII.
In Hawaii, martial law, complete with curfews and blackouts, was imposed.
Many of our residents at Roselani Place were teenagers here in Hawaii when this
historic event occurred. Many of their lives were changed forever by this event; some for the worse, some for the
better.
It is a great opportunity to ask your family members that survived this momentous occasion where they were and
what they experienced. Our residents are the last surviving members of that great generation and their stories
should not be forgotten.
December 7, 2015 is the 74th the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I know some of our residents were
here in Hawaii, and even on Oahu on that day; and as the survivors of that “Day of Infamy”, as Franklyn Roosevelt
called it, I hope you will make a point to share your memories with your families and our community. Next year
on the 75th Anniversary we will put Pearl Harbor memories in our newsletter, so please, write your thoughts
down and give them to Diane Alba-Means, or to me, to start gathering now. ~ Steve Hansen, GM - Roselani

Roselani Place December Employee
of the Month: Caitlin Stribley
Caitlin Stribley has been selected as the
employee of the month for December.
She joined our great team of Licensed
Nurses about a year ago, and is usually
working the day time shift. Caitlin has
really embraced the challenge of
learning the many aspects of her role,
and has shown great poise, positivity,
humility and professionalism along the
way. Her flexibility and willingness to
help cover shifts has been a
tremendous asset in assuring that all of our residents are well
cared for. She is also very kind, gentle, calm, patient,
conscientious, reliable, and easily offers up a smile or
chuckle. We feel so fortunate to have her as part of our
Roselani ‘ohana and hope that you will join us in
congratulating her on this recognition. Congratulations
Caitlin! And thank you wholeheartedly for all that you do!
