They will understand that Jesus, our Role Model, is both human and divine. They will learn that sacrifice is part of the Christian way of life. Science (Mrs. Humbert): We will be finishing our salt and flour maps in social studies this week. We may get into our Life Cycles science booklet if time permits. Social Studies (Mrs. Humbert): We will be painting our salt and flour maps this week! Our discussion on how the 3 regions of Indiana formed will continue as we begin discovering Indiana waterways in the Indiana Studies Weekly: Week 3! Math (Mrs. Humbert): Multiply, multiply, multiply! We will continue to build our skills in discovering numerous ways to multiply. We will be using the distributive, commutative, and associative properties to break down numbers in order to multiply multi-digit numbers! Reading (Mrs. Craney): We started our new novel, Petey by the author Ben Mikaelsen. I’ve read this book to my SMS students for a hundred years! (hyperole ) The most amazing news ever…Ben Mikaelson is coming to St. Malachy on the evening of November 6th! More to come on that awesome tidbit! Our basal reading story this week is “The Raft.” The students will learn new vocabulary: raft, downstream, scattered, cluttered, disgusted, and nuzzle. The students will learn characters, plot, and setting. We will work on fluency. We will learn the parts of a map: compass rose, map key and legend. We will use context clues and paragraph clues to identify unknown words and phrases. We will identify figurative language and parts of speech in both our basal and our novel. English (Mrs. Craney): We are going to learn when to indent a new paragraph and we will capitalize proper nouns. We will use capitalization and punctuation correctly. We will learn that a run-on sentence joins together two or more sentences that should be written separately. The students will correct a run on sentence by separating two complete ideas into two sentences. They will use commas correctly in a series and will learn that we have to write out numbers under ten. Writing (Mrs. Craney): We will write to prompts. We will learn that a Cinquain is a poem with five lines that follows a specific pattern, and we will create one of our own. We will also learn that an Acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line and each line of the poem relates to the topic. We will write one of these, too! Spelling (Mrs. Craney): Our words this week contain the long /o/ sound: goal, mole, stone, stove, chose, own, fold, flow, mold, toll, groan, stole, foam, mows, roasting, lower, sole, blown, bolt, quote, kite, shy, climb, coaster, motor.
