RESEARCH
I study how individuals and groups in organizations construct meaning around ongoing events. This includes
how they allocate attention, form mental representations, and utilize metacognition to revise these
representations. In doing so, I have collaborated with neuroscientists and Buddhist monks, implemented
multilevel surveys in organizations, and modeled organizing processes using qualitative observation. My
goal in pursuing this line of work is to develop a practically useful, conceptually sound, and theoretically
rich understanding of (meta)cognition in organizations.
DISSERTATION
Distinguishing the Map from the Terrain: Essays on Mindful Metacognition and Mental Representation.
Mental representations (i.e., subjective interpretations of events) have a double-edged character: they
enable organizational members to solve problems, but lead to competency traps as they grow inflexible
over time. In this dissertation, I introduce mindful metacognition as a remedy to the inflexibility of mental
representations. Mindful metacognition captures how organizational members step back and monitor their
thoughts and feelings from a detached perspective. Across several essays, I link it with valued organizational
outcomes across levels of analysis, show how it can be integrated into management education, and provide
scholars with a novel assessment tool.
