Monday 13 March SP Music Assembly - Mrs Koller 07h30

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE - Good luck to our cricketers at Montrose!
Dear Parents, Staff and Pupils
As we begin to see the first of our summer extramurals draw to a close, I
would like to express my sincerest appreciation and congratulations to all
involved. A huge word of thanks is extended to all of our parents for the
support that you show towards our very fortunate pupils. The positive
reinforcement, both on and off the sports fields, goes such a long way in
ensuring that our pupils remain motivated to give of their best. The efforts of
our various sporting coaches also needs to be recognised. The selfless sense
of passion shown at the various practice sessions and matches is admirable
and certainly appreciated by all concerned. Finally, my congratulations to all of
our pupils for their incredible efforts, for their fortitude through difficulty and for
devoting an amazing amount of time to ensuring that their teams achieve the
success they deserve.
At the time of writing this, our 1st team cricketers are set to compete in Friday
afternoon’s semi-finals at the annual Montrose Tournament. We wish them
every success!
Social media and technology devices
A more thorough reminder relating to our policy pertaining to the use of
technological devices will be included in an upcoming newsletter. For 21 st
Century parents and teachers, the challenges presented by the use of such
devices and, indeed, the access to various social media platforms, remains a
significant challenge. In light of this, the Senior Preparatory management are
in the process of enlisting the services of Ms Emma Sadleir, a social media
law expert and well-known speaker and presenter, to provide a presentation to
our pupils and, potentially, to our parents in the second term. More information
relating to Ms Sadleir can be found on the following link: http://
emmasadleir.com/. In a newsletter to follow, parents and pupils will be
reminded about the guidelines associated with our Code of Conduct as well as
our IT Acceptable Use Policy. A renewed effort is valuable in all schools
regarding the dos and don’ts of technological devices and social usage. In this
regard, we plan to ensure that acceptable use of devices at school is driven
and implemented consistently across the board.

Senior Preparatory academics
Mrs Louise Browne, Deputy Principal: Academics in the Preparatory School,
shares with us some academic developments:
In our journey to prepare children for the challenges of an often uncertain
world we as teachers have become convinced of the need to focus on
teaching our pupils to think critically. To this end, Mrs Kerryn White, Head of
Thinking Skills, and the drive team have focused on a variety of activities to
develop some strategies and activities to foster this type of thinking. We have
also introduced a problem-solving lesson into our Grade 5 academic offering,
with our extension teacher, Mrs Alison Watson. This is similar to problemsolving activities taught by our Head of Mathematics, Mr Ramollo, in our
Grade 6 and 7 classes. We believe that focusing specifically on this skill helps
build our pupils’ problem-solving strategies and is critical in developing an
attitude of determination and perseverance. Furthermore, teachers have also
had an opportunity to visit various colleagues’ lessons this week to encourage
collaboration and teamwork. Recently, we also celebrated World Read Aloud
Day, that included various activities to encourage reading. This coming week
we will be celebrating our pupils’ general knowledge during our InterHouse
Quiz, which will take on a slightly different format this year.
By now your son or daughter will have had a couple of opportunities to write
some formal assessments and been involved in various class activities to help
the teacher in starting to form an academic snapshot of how your child is
coping.
We are implementing continuous assessment (CASS) this year from Grade 47. This means that each subject is assessed throughout the course of the year
and those assessments recorded per term are ‘carried over’ to the next term.
This means that assessment does not simply ‘begin again’ with each new term
but rather continues seamlessly as part of reflecting the continual progression
of each individual.
Please take note that Senior Prep Parent Consultations will be taking place at
the beginning of April before we go on our educational tours. We look forward
to meeting with you.
As communicated earlier this term, we have revised our reporting structures in
the Senior Preparatory: the various dates around reports for Term 1 for the
Grade 4-7 pupils can be found in the table below.

Staff news
We welcome our new Marimba coach, Mr Themba Ncube. Mr Ncube has been
involved in marimba performances at a number of local and international
events and occasions and we are delighted that he will be working with our
Senior Prep Marimba groups.
Parents’ Association: Swimathon 2017
The Parents’ Association would like to thank all the parents, family and friends
for their generous donations to our Swimathon this year, and the pupils who
swam so enthusiastically. We raised a record amount and we thank you all.
These funds will be used for the betterment of our College.
Cansa Sprayathon 2017
Our sincere thanks to staff, parents, pupils and the entire Dainfern community
for ensuring that this fun drive to raise funds for cancer research was once
again a great success. It is so important for our community and children to
learn to reach out to others. It is in the empathy and the understanding of the
power that is within us to make a difference that we come to understand “I am
because we are.”
Thank you to everyone who supported the Cansa Sprayathon/Shavathon
across the College. In total Dainfern College raised well over R30 000.00!
Siyabonga Kakhulu, baie dankie, re a leboga gigolo and thank you very much!
Easter eggs drive
It is that time of the year yet again, when we are all looking forward to Easter.
Our drive to collect Easter eggs has officially started. It has been an honour
and a privilege over the years to support ReShomile Primary in Diepsloot by
bringing a smile to each child’s face at this time of the year. We would like to
collect eggs until 22 March 2017 to enable us to deliver in good time. Thank
you to everyone who has already contributed.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in
everything
by
prayer
and
supplication, with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to
God; and the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in
Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6 - 7
Our children are significantly shaped
and moulded by their experiences at
school.
One
of
the
great
contributions you, as a parent, can
make over these years is to PRAY –
not only for your own children, but
also for other students at Dainfern
College, the staff, and all aspects
relating to the school. We have
started a Parent Prayer group that
meets weekly to pray over the
needs of our school community.
The focus of the focus of the prayer
group is:
 To bring the needs of our
children and the school before
God.
 To support and encourage one
another as parents of Dainfern
College.
 To pray for the Heads, teachers,
staff and parents.
 To be a Christ-centred, positive
and supportive influence at
Dainfern College.
The parent prayer group is a very
informal meeting of parents, where
time is spent praying over the needs
of our school. Everyone is welcome.
The prayer meetings take place
every Friday at 07h30 in the meeting
room behind the Main Reception. If
you would like more information
please
email
me
at

I look forward to seeing the Power of
Prayer active at Dainfern College.

Montrose Night Series
Both our Netball teams have improved throughout the series, with our U11s
winning two of their three matches last week. The girls’ perseverance and
willingness to succeed have not gone unnoticed. Well done!
A tremendous Cricket quarter final was played last Friday where Bryandale
scored 133 runs in the allotted 20 overs, setting our boys a large target to
chase. With wickets falling early in our innings and the run rate lower than we
anticipated, it appeared that the odds were against us. Nick Forde and Luke
Carter had a great partnership, scoring 38 off 33 balls and 55 off 36 balls
respectively, to take the side to victory. Luke was awarded ‘Man of the Match’.
Well done to the side on their tenacity, humbleness and fine sportsmanship.
Our boys come up against Montrose today with the first innings starting at
13h00. The other semi-finals is between GCB Lions and HeronBridge. The
final of the Montrose Night Series starts at 20h30. Entertainment is scheduled
from 17h00 to 18h00 with sky divers, raffles etc. We encourage all to come
along and support our Team and remember ORANGE is the colour! We wish
our boys well in the semi-finals and hope that they will progress to the finals.
Tennis
Our Tennis girls have had a phenomenal season, with their final league
matches being played against HeronBridge on Wednesday where they won 47
-34. They have been unbeaten this season, resulting in their winning the
overall League in which they participated! Congratulations to all the girls:
Kaikeni Rugara, Korona Rugara, Kate Weir, Julia Satram, Hannah Wells,
Unarine Ralinala & Shay Sielemann. We are so proud you!
