Collection LBKEL: Celtic linguistics and literature
Collection
The collection Celtic languages and culture (LBKEL) contains works about all
Celtic languages and literatures: Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Manx (Gaelic of the
Isle of Man), Welsh, Breton and Cornish. The most important sections, however,
are the books in and about the two main Celtic languages, Irish and Welsh.
The Library also has a number of periodicals in subscription relevant to the study
of the Celtic languages and culture.
The collection is first of all divided according to the Celtic languages by means of
a language code in the call number. Thus, Irish has numbers LBKEL 18.67 ier,
Welsh LBKEL 18.67 wel etc. Within the different language sections, the same
divisions are used.
The first division is linguistics and literature taken together (18.67 language
00…), containing particularly dictionaries. Next comes linguistics (18.67 language
01 through 60), containing historical linguistics, dialectology and grammars, to
mention a few. The next division is literature (18.67 language 70 through 88).
Within Irish and Welsh literature the focus is on medieval texts and studies
dealing with these texts. There is also a substantial amount of material on folk
literature, particularly for Ireland.
Detailed information can be found under Systematic arrangement (p. 3).
Outside the collection LBKEL there is also quite some material relevant to the
study of Celtic languages and culture.
In the History collection (LBGES): archaeology, history of the Celts and Ireland,
chronicles and historical sources (charters, legal texts).
In the collection Documentary Information (LBDOC): catalogues of manuscripts,
studies on Irish and English paleography and book illumination, editions of insular
manuscripts.
In the collection Theology and religious studies (LBREL): studies about Celtic
religions and about religion in Ireland (Saint Patrick).
In the Art history collection (LBKUN): the art of Ireland and Wales.
Medieval insular manuscripts are available in facsimile, on microfilm or via the
Internet.
A list of available manuscripts can be found via IMMURGU, a project of the
department of Celtic languages and culture.
