April 2014
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
March 1st saw St. David’s Day.
The Wallingford Welsh Society made their annual visit and sang wonderful
traditional Welsh songs, read original Welsh poems and of course posed beautifully
for the camera.
Beth Inglis & Haydn Thomas
sang beautifully in their native
Welsh tongue, word for word
and without a song book!
It was fantastic to see.
If you look closely you will see
our Dr Lewis, who, after
completing her round in the
home exchanged her Dr’s bag
for a song book and joined in.
And of course
my special
lady
Mrs Ira Hoare
accompanied
the singing by
playing the
piano.
Mrs Hoare was my music teacher at school.
She looked the same then as she does now.
I must admit I struggle to call her Ira, she will
always be ‘Mrs Hoare’ it’s a respect thing!
St Patricks Day
Pupils from Fir Tree
School and Wallingford
School, were given
special permission to
have time away from
school lessons to come
and perform for us.
Hands were clapping and
feet tapping as the girls
danced perfectly.
The group were led by Amy Southern who is no
stranger to Westgate.
Amy first came to dance for us in 2010, when she
came in to ask if she could dance for the
residents on St Patricks day. She really enjoyed
being here so became a volunteer and visited on
a weekly basis until she had to give up so she
could spend more time studying for her A levels.
March 21st was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this

April 2014
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
March 1st saw St. David’s Day.
The Wallingford Welsh Society made their annual visit and sang wonderful
traditional Welsh songs, read original Welsh poems and of course posed beautifully
for the camera.
Beth Inglis & Haydn Thomas
sang beautifully in their native
Welsh tongue, word for word
and without a song book!
It was fantastic to see.
If you look closely you will see
our Dr Lewis, who, after
completing her round in the
home exchanged her Dr’s bag
for a song book and joined in.
And of course
my special
lady
Mrs Ira Hoare
accompanied
the singing by
playing the
piano.
Mrs Hoare was my music teacher at school.
She looked the same then as she does now.
I must admit I struggle to call her Ira, she will
always be ‘Mrs Hoare’ it’s a respect thing!
St Patricks Day
Pupils from Fir Tree
School and Wallingford
School, were given
special permission to
have time away from
school lessons to come
and perform for us.
Hands were clapping and
feet tapping as the girls
danced perfectly.
The group were led by Amy Southern who is no
stranger to Westgate.
Amy first came to dance for us in 2010, when she
came in to ask if she could dance for the
residents on St Patricks day. She really enjoyed
being here so became a volunteer and visited on
a weekly basis until she had to give up so she
could spend more time studying for her A levels.
March 21st was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this

April 2014
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
March 1st saw St. David’s Day.
The Wallingford Welsh Society made their annual visit and sang wonderful
traditional Welsh songs, read original Welsh poems and of course posed beautifully
for the camera.
Beth Inglis & Haydn Thomas
sang beautifully in their native
Welsh tongue, word for word
and without a song book!
It was fantastic to see.
If you look closely you will see
our Dr Lewis, who, after
completing her round in the
home exchanged her Dr’s bag
for a song book and joined in.
And of course
my special
lady
Mrs Ira Hoare
accompanied
the singing by
playing the
piano.
Mrs Hoare was my music teacher at school.
She looked the same then as she does now.
I must admit I struggle to call her Ira, she will
always be ‘Mrs Hoare’ it’s a respect thing!
St Patricks Day
Pupils from Fir Tree
School and Wallingford
School, were given
special permission to
have time away from
school lessons to come
and perform for us.
Hands were clapping and
feet tapping as the girls
danced perfectly.
The group were led by Amy Southern who is no
stranger to Westgate.
Amy first came to dance for us in 2010, when she
came in to ask if she could dance for the
residents on St Patricks day. She really enjoyed
being here so became a volunteer and visited on
a weekly basis until she had to give up so she
could spend more time studying for her A levels.
March 21st was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this

April 2014
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
March 1st saw St. David’s Day.
The Wallingford Welsh Society made their annual visit and sang wonderful
traditional Welsh songs, read original Welsh poems and of course posed beautifully
for the camera.
Beth Inglis & Haydn Thomas
sang beautifully in their native
Welsh tongue, word for word
and without a song book!
It was fantastic to see.
If you look closely you will see
our Dr Lewis, who, after
completing her round in the
home exchanged her Dr’s bag
for a song book and joined in.
And of course
my special
lady
Mrs Ira Hoare
accompanied
the singing by
playing the
piano.
Mrs Hoare was my music teacher at school.
She looked the same then as she does now.
I must admit I struggle to call her Ira, she will
always be ‘Mrs Hoare’ it’s a respect thing!
St Patricks Day
Pupils from Fir Tree
School and Wallingford
School, were given
special permission to
have time away from
school lessons to come
and perform for us.
Hands were clapping and
feet tapping as the girls
danced perfectly.
The group were led by Amy Southern who is no
stranger to Westgate.
Amy first came to dance for us in 2010, when she
came in to ask if she could dance for the
residents on St Patricks day. She really enjoyed
being here so became a volunteer and visited on
a weekly basis until she had to give up so she
could spend more time studying for her A levels.
March 21st was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this

April 2014
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
March 1st saw St. David’s Day.
The Wallingford Welsh Society made their annual visit and sang wonderful
traditional Welsh songs, read original Welsh poems and of course posed beautifully
for the camera.
Beth Inglis & Haydn Thomas
sang beautifully in their native
Welsh tongue, word for word
and without a song book!
It was fantastic to see.
If you look closely you will see
our Dr Lewis, who, after
completing her round in the
home exchanged her Dr’s bag
for a song book and joined in.
And of course
my special
lady
Mrs Ira Hoare
accompanied
the singing by
playing the
piano.
Mrs Hoare was my music teacher at school.
She looked the same then as she does now.
I must admit I struggle to call her Ira, she will
always be ‘Mrs Hoare’ it’s a respect thing!
St Patricks Day
Pupils from Fir Tree
School and Wallingford
School, were given
special permission to
have time away from
school lessons to come
and perform for us.
Hands were clapping and
feet tapping as the girls
danced perfectly.
The group were led by Amy Southern who is no
stranger to Westgate.
Amy first came to dance for us in 2010, when she
came in to ask if she could dance for the
residents on St Patricks day. She really enjoyed
being here so became a volunteer and visited on
a weekly basis until she had to give up so she
could spend more time studying for her A levels.
March 21st was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this

Westgate House Newsletter
April 2014
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
March 1st saw St. David’s Day.
The Wallingford Welsh Society made their annual visit and sang wonderful
traditional Welsh songs, read original Welsh poems and of course posed beautifully
for the camera.
Beth Inglis & Haydn Thomas
sang beautifully in their native
Welsh tongue, word for word
and without a song book!
It was fantastic to see.
If you look closely you will see
our Dr Lewis, who, after
completing her round in the
home exchanged her Dr’s bag
for a song book and joined in.
And of course
my special
lady
Mrs Ira Hoare
accompanied
the singing by
playing the
piano.
Mrs Hoare was my music teacher at school.
She looked the same then as she does now.
I must admit I struggle to call her Ira, she will
always be ‘Mrs Hoare’ it’s a respect thing!
St Patricks Day
Pupils from Fir Tree
School and Wallingford
School, were given
special permission to
have time away from
school lessons to come
and perform for us.
Hands were clapping and
feet tapping as the girls
danced perfectly.
The group were led by Amy Southern who is no
stranger to Westgate.
Amy first came to dance for us in 2010, when she
came in to ask if she could dance for the
residents on St Patricks day. She really enjoyed
being here so became a volunteer and visited on
a weekly basis until she had to give up so she
could spend more time studying for her A levels.
March 21st was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this

Mable really enjoyed making her cross
out of wooden pegs.
And after just celebrating her
104th Birthday
She had a lot to be proud of.
Ivy concentrated just as hard and
was extremely pleased with her
efforts too.
Quite rightly so!
