The Maryland Issue These are the border states during the Civil War era. Do they have slaves? Are they Union or Confederate? The Maryland Issue Lincoln was not popular in Maryland. He received only 2.5% of MD’s votes in the election of 1860. He once had to sneak through Baltimore in the middle of the night b/c of a possible assassination attempt. The Maryland Issue The state was split on secession. Same as Virginia. The east wanted to leave. The West wanted to stay. The city of Baltimore was divided. The Maryland Issue Lincoln sent troops into Baltimore on their way to DC. This infuriated local residents. Why? The Maryland Issue Violence erupted in the town and citizens called armies from both countries to come and keep peace. Lincoln sent more troops in and suspended many personal liberties including throwing local leaders in jail. The Maryland Issue This continued to upset folks in Maryland, but since the US military had so much control over the area, there was nothing Marylanders could do about it. South Carolina decides to take the fort by force. Terrible decision IMHO. Fort Sumter After more than a day of southern bombardment, Anderson finally surrendered the fort. Only two US were killed and that was during a ceremonial 100 gun salute. The salute was… um... shortened. Fort Sumter So, who won the first battle of Fort Sumter?
