What is important to consider is that when successful people fail at anything encourage our children to have a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. Research has shown that there has been no clear link found between parents’ growth mindset and their child’s mindset. The mindset of a child is determined by what we focus on - do you praise your child’s intelligence? “Wow! You got an A without even trying - you are very smart!” Praising children’s intelligence does not give them confidence or make them learn better according to Carol Dweck, Professor of Developmental Psychology at **** Stanford University. Dweck found that children’s performance worsens if they always hear how smart they are. These children are highly sensitive to failure and are more likely to give up when faced with a challenge. Page 2 Page 2 Praising for effort sends the message that your child has the power to improve and change, but labelling him "smart" gives him little control over changing how he is perceived. Be mindful of labelling yourself ("I can't do my taxes -- I'm terrible at maths"). Teach kids from an early age that the brain is a muscle that can be strengthened with practice. This sends the message that kids can directly affect their intelligence, which may empower unmotivated teenagers. It's critical for parents to help their kids to learn to cope with setbacks and to help them focus on ways to improve. Professor Westwell talked about our view of failure having an impact on whether our children have a fixed or a growth mindset. A ‘growth failure mindset’ teaches perseverance and grit, two important qualities for future success. Don’t feel anxious when you see signs of your child failing. Failure and setbacks are productive and can be interesting and should be encouraged. Have a look at the following link about Sarah Blakely, founder and CEO of Spanks. Page 3 Page 3 Senior Leader’s News Australian Mathematics Competition Results The Australian Mathematics Competition is one of the foremost mathematics competitions in the Pacific and SouthEast Asia regions, regarded as an important benchmark for mathematical ability. In addition to assessing basic numeracy skills, it also challenges students with advanced problem-solving. In 2016, 15 students from Black Forest Primary School participated in the AMC, with strong results. In 2017, we are investigating expanding our participation with the Australian Mathematics Trust to engage students with further mathematics enrichment opportunities - please get in touch with Joel Catchlove if you would like to be kept up to date on this. We went on the Archie Badenoch boat along the Port River, climbed many steps to the top of the Lighthouse and dressed up as sea creatures. We also played in a yellow submarine, climbed aboard a Ketch and explored 3 levels of maritime history in the museum. On the Archie boat we saw dolphins. Joshua Avril and I were singing on the boat. Zoe A My favourite part of the day was the dolphin cruise because the captain was funny! Emily I liked going on the Archie boat because I saw a pink dolphin. Ben We put on life jackets to go on the Archie Badenoch boat. Luke We went downstairs on the Ketch boat and it was really dark. Madison It was curvy, so on the sides we slid down. Annie I went into the place where the captain cooks. Avril I played with the ropes on the Ketch boat. Jones We went downstairs where the sailors used to sleep. Zoe S We went up the lighthouse and looked over the top and tried to look for buildings. Ben We went up the curly stairs to the top of the lighthouse. India The staircase was really long and we had to keep our hands on the bars all the time. Zoe A The lighthouse was really, really high. Luke There was 58 steps to the top of the lighthouse. Jensen We ate our lunch on the benches outside the museum. Charlie We had fun in the Rockpool and dressed up. I went in the submarine. Ahnaf I dressed up as a poisonous shark and we played games. India I dressed up as lots of things in the Rockpool. Logan I dressed up as an octopus and I was scaring the people in the submarine! Imogen In the museum, we used grabbers to try to pick up old metal things. Joshua I loved bouncing on the surfboard in the museum. Annie I liked playing with the clowns and I got a 6 and a 4. Evan Page 5 Page 5 SCHOOL SPORT, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND BEING ACTIVE Black Forest Primary School has just celebrated another outstanding P.E Week which provides all students with an opportunity to participate in a variety of sporting activities and learn new skills. Our school has many dedicated, committed and hard working parents and caregivers who " STEP UP " and coach, manage and coordinate over 30 teams in our 6 school sports of CRICKET, BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL, NETBALL, SOCCER, and FOOTBALL. We thank you all for your support and encouragement as this truly makes B.F.P.S a special and well respected school in our local community. School sport and a quality Health and Physical Education ( H.P.E ) program will enable all students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to make decisions and take action that leads to a healthy and physically active lifestyle for themselves and the community in which they live. All children at B.F.P.S are involved in H.P.E programs that provide : A developmentally appropriate and meaningful program that enhances the physical, cognitive and affective development of all students. Inclusive instruction that maximises engagement by all students in class activities. Ongoing assessment and feedback to all students that is used to guide student learning. A program that supports lifelong learning toward leading a healthy and physically active life. To cap off the year we have 66 eager cricketers playing across 7 teams and proud to say that within the Adelaide Primary School zone we have the highest number of teams participating out of 11 other schools in the zone. We haven’t seen numbers like this for years and I do hope the trend keeps escalating. The 2017 Summer Sports forms will be out in Wk 6 so ensure you get them in quickly. For the first timers who would like to join Kanga Juniors (Grade 2 in 2017) we will require coach/coaches to assist in developing the children on Friday evenings. You don’t need any experience just the willingness to guide them into the right direction. Of course you will need a Police Clearance and have or will complete the RAN Training required to work with children. “My Cricket Mentor” letters were distributed to Grade 1 students last week. This program focusses on students in Year 1, who are invited to two sessions during Term 4 with a focus of learning the fundamentals of cricket. The sessions will be supervised by Marc Zinndorf and myself along with the members of the A Grade (Year 6/7) team. Along with learning the basics, the A Grade team will provide the children a sense of leadership and somebody to look up to within the school environment. The A Grade students will be educated and supported in their roles and responsibilities. Ultimately we would like to see the Year 1 students join Kanga Cricket in 2017 and more importantly the wider cricket community within Black Forest Primary School. My Cricket Mentor is free to participate in. It’s strictly about inspiring children to participate in the sport of cricket. Notification of participation was due yesterday however if you wish to still join please call me on the number below. End of year cricket presentations will be held at Glandore Oval on Friday 9 th December from 7pm. BBQ and soft drinks will be available and the Adelaide Cricket Club is kindly opening up the clubrooms for other beverages or snacks to be purchased. People often take a picnic, or you can just do a course and leave. All courses can be done individually or as a group. Regular orienteers will be available to help newcomers. The first event of this summer’s twilight series is to be held at 6 PM on Friday 18 th November Start anytime from 6 – 7 PM for the park – street courses. The courses will extend from here to the SE parklands area towards Greenhill Rd, including through the laneways of this part of the city.
