Letter From the Director
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
A new integrated cancer center, a healing garden, new technology
and more patient- and family-friendly environments are some of the
enhancements St. Charles was able to accomplish in 2014, thanks in large
part to philanthropic giving from grateful patients, board members, physicians,
employee caregivers, community leaders, corporations and foundations.
It is impossible to spend even an hour at a St. Charles hospital or clinic and not be moved by the
triumphs and miraculous moments unfolding all around. St. Charles is known for the expertise and
compassionate caring provided by our medical staff day in and day out. And, a patient-centered
approach ensures St. Charles remains focused on providing an extraordinary level of service, safety
and quality. In all things, we put patients and their well-being first.
Likewise, St. Charles Foundation takes pride in providing our donors with meaningful and important
avenues for maintaining and expanding superior health care. In the following pages, you will see an
overview of last year’s accomplishments and highlights guided by our vision of creating America’s
healthiest community, together. The successes are both impressive and inspiring. Most importantly,
however, they represent the hard work and dedication of thousands of donors and volunteers who are
instrumental in helping St. Charles expand and advance patient care and improve the health of our
community year after year.
We invite you to join us in creating the finest healing environment possible, right here at home.
The well-being of our community will benefit from your generosity.

a local nonprofit that has been placing art in our community since 1973.
Donor Profile: Gary and Kay Craven
For nearly 20 years, Gary and Kay Craven were
among the rare longtime residents of Central
Oregon who were largely unfamiliar with St. Charles.
They had always been in good health and fortunate
enough not to need it.
The Cravens relocated to the area from Eastern
Oregon in 1995 after a memorable vacation in
Sunriver. They quickly became active members of
the community as owners of Big Country RV and
supporters of many charitable organizations over
the years. But they had little contact with
St. Charles.
Two years ago, the Cravens participated in
St. Charles Foundation’s Intern for a Day (IFAD),
an in-depth tour of the Bend hospital, and were
impressed.
“I thought, what an awesome facility for the people
in our community and how lucky we are to have
a place that offers everything for so many in one
place,” said Kay. “IFAD really opened my eyes to
what’s right in our backyard.”
Last July, friend and St. Charles Foundation Board
Member Chuck Chackel invited the Cravens to take a
tour of the nearly completed St. Charles Cancer Center.
5
Though they hadn’t been directly affected
themselves, they knew how cancer had impacted
Chuck’s life. They were moved by his story as well
as the stories of others — local residents traveling
to Portland for treatment adding extra stress to
what’s likely the most stressful time in their lives,
patients who had to bounce between multiple
locations for their various treatments and services.
They also heard the statistics. Nearly one in two of
us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in
our lifetimes.
“After touring the Cancer Center, I felt it was good
addition to St. Charles and the community of Bend,”
said Gary. “Cancer seems to touch so many lives.”
The Cravens made a gift of $25,000 to help
complete the construction.
“We were wandering the halls thinking how
blessed we were,” said Kay. As they passed the
chemotherapy area, they noted how glad they were
that they didn’t need to be in that room.
Just two weeks later, cancer would touch their lives
directly. Having a comprehensive cancer center at
St. Charles would take on new significance for the
Cravens and their family.
“We didn’t give for that reason. We just knew there
was a need, that it touches so many” said Kay. “It’s
amazing how many lives cancer affects. Everyone
has a story. Some good, some not so good.”
Over 500 individuals and organizations from our
community joined the Cravens in donating to
St. Charles Foundation’s Capital Campaign for the
construction of the new St. Charles Cancer Center,
each at their own levels and for their own reasons.
The result is a state-of-the-art facility offering
complete cancer care under one roof.
Though their donation was originally made with
the community in mind, after firsthand experience
at St. Charles, the Cravens are grateful for the
comprehensive services that allowed for treatment
and, ultimately, recovery right here at home.

Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund:
Finishing Strong
At the eleventh hour, the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund made a pivotal matching gift of
$50,000 to the Cancer Center Capital Campaign. In a final push to reach St. Charles Foundation’s
$5.7 million fundraising goal, this gift gave the campaign and our staff, board members and
volunteers renewed energy, ultimately helping the Foundation exceed its goal and complete the
construction of the new, comprehensive St. Charles Cancer Center.

Sustaining the Circle of Giving:
A Caregiver’s Story
For 16 years, Jeff Coughenour was a professional
ski patroller, wilderness responder and EMT. The
deep satisfaction he felt helping people who were
injured at Mt. Bachelor inspired him to take his
passion to the next level.
With the support of his wife, Susan, and two
children, Gray and Claire, Jeff overcame the
daunting prospect of fierce competition and a
hard road ahead and was accepted to Central
Oregon Community College’s nursing program.
In 2014, while working as a tech in the St. Charles
Emergency Department to help finance his studies,
Jeff applied for and was awarded an Arlene Carlton
Nursing Scholarship. The program, administered by
St. Charles Foundation, was established specifically
to assist non-nursing St. Charles caregivers who
are pursuing careers in nursing.
“Receiving the scholarship gave me more
confidence in my choice to pursue a nursing
degree,” said Jeff.
His wife could see how the acknowledgment
of his hard work changed his resolve.
“Our little family has supported Jeff through his
work, his classes and his ultimate acceptance
into nursing school,” said Susan. “The $1,500
scholarship is a godsend for us. Just as important
is the impact this recognition had on Jeff and, thus,
our whole family. He is renewed in his purpose.”
Now in his second term, Jeff has been able to work
toward his degree without a full-time job, thanks, in
part, to the scholarship. He plans to stay in Central
Oregon and aspires to work as an RN at St. Charles.
“He has a great big heart and is so giving and
kind,” said Susan. “I am thrilled to see him receive
the same treatment.”
And the circle of giving continues: Last November,
Jeff donated a guided fly fishing adventure that
was auctioned off at St. Charles Foundation’s 2014
Saints Gala for $1,000—money that will in turn
help others.

For Every Heart Patient, a Journey
July 18 was just another beautiful summer day in
Central Oregon for 50-year-old Redmond resident
Cheryl Pattan. Until it wasn’t.
Upon returning home from her weekly spin class, she
began experiencing severe chest pains. Immediately
aware that something was very wrong, she called
911. That’s the last thing she would remember until
she woke up days later at St. Charles Bend.
As Cheryl was talking to the dispatcher, she
passed out. Her mother found her lying face down
on the floor in her hallway with the phone just
inches away from her hand. As the dispatcher was
instructing her mother on what to do, officers from
the Redmond Police Department arrived and started
performing CPR until the paramedics got there.
“They tell me that my heart was shocked a total
of seven times, as they would lose me then would
get a pulse,” said Cheryl. Usually the procedure
is performed a maximum of five times, but the
paramedics continued because they saw hope.
Cheryl was taken to the St. Charles Redmond
Emergency Department where a CT scan found
that her main artery was blocked. She was rushed
to St. Charles Bend for surgery to insert a stent.
From the Redmond ED to surgery in Bend and
through recovery, home health care and rehab,
St. Charles Heart Services helped Cheryl transition
slowly and comfortably to regain her strength over
the months following her surgery.
“I loved the cardiac rehab program. It contributed to
saving my life and getting me back on track,” said
Cheryl. “The classes were sensational and helped
get my mind on healthy eating and exercise. The
staff really made the difference. I think of them
as family.”
To help ensure that all St. Charles heart patients
receive the same exceptional care as Cheryl did, in
2014 St. Charles Foundation designated $1 million
from an unrestricted estate gift to create the John
D. Picchetti Endowment for Heart Services.
“I had some pretty amazing caregivers that I really
received quality care from,” said Cheryl. “All of the
medical staff were, each and every one, very caring.”
