our recycling rate to grow
to an all time high. We
look forward to
announcing the figures
later this year.

Where does my recycling go?
Have you ever wondered what happens to your recycling?
Once collected from your home, it is delivered to our bulking
station in Newton Abbot. Here all of the materials are prepared
for transportation to reprocessors across the UK and abroad.
The income generated from the sale of the glass, plastics,
cans, cardboard and paper helps towards the cost of the
collection service.
See the map opposite to find out what happens to
your recycling.
Aluminium cans are sent
to Merseyside to be
shredded and melted
before being made
into new drinks cans.
Glass bottles and jars are
taken to Yorkshire. They are
crushed and sorted into
colours before being melted
and blown into new
bottles and jars.
Steel cans are sent to
Wiltshire where they are
melted before being
made into products such
as bikes, car parts
and new food cans.
Plastic packaging is sent to
the East Midlands. It is
sorted, shredded, washed,
melted and made into
pellets. It is then used by
manufacturers that make
items such as plastic
bottles, garden furniture
and even new bins.
Paper is sent to Norfolk
where it is pulped and
dried onto large rolls and
made into high quality
newsprint.
Collecting garden waste, food waste and cardboard separately provides
higher quality single waste streams that can be dealt with more effectively.
Garden waste is
composted at a site in
Devon. It is shredded
and laid out in long
piles to decompose in
the open air.
Food waste is taken to
an anaerobic
digestion facility in
Somerset where it is
converted into
electricity and
a fertiliser.
Cardboard is currently
sent to China. It will
be made into a pulp
before making new
boxes and
packaging.
Information correct as at January 2016. The outlets for the materials we collect are subject
to change and are dependent on price, supply and demand.

Wasting food wastes money!
Are you shocked at how quickly you fill
up your new food waste container? Do
you ever consider the cost of throwing
away food?
Wasted good food and drink costs the
average UK family almost £60 a month.
Here are five easy things that we can all do
to help waste less food and save money.
Food for thought...
In the UK, every year we
throw away.....
1. Get your portions right. Only cook
the amount of food that you need.
2. Check the date. Find out about
different date labels. Did you know, you can
freeze food right up to 24 hours before the
use by date?
595,000 tonnes of bread,
cake and pastries
3. Plan your meals. Check your
cupboards, write a list, take it to the shops
and stick to it.
4. Store your food correctly to keep it
fresh for longer. Store apples in the fridge,
potatoes in a cool dark place, and bread in
the cupboard or freezer.
440,000 tonnes of
homemade and prepared
meals
5. Last night’s leftovers could be
today’s feast. Go to lovefoodhatewaste.com
for recipes for great ideas to use up any
extra food.
243,000 tonnes meat
How would you spend an extra £60 a month?
