A computer expert charged with hacking for the Chinese army, Hu Feng, is a selfdescribed outsider. Known to the online community as UglyGorilla, Hu wrote a profile of
himself as a man having little ambition but wanting to travel the world. Another accused
hacker, Zhou Peng, raised in a rich family, considered himself a noble patriot like former
Premier Mao Zhedong. The U.S. Justice Department yesterday charged Hu, Zhou, and
others with pilfering data from the computers of American firms doing business in
China. They supposedly wanted to steal business secrets prized by Chinese companies
competing with the Americans.
