CALIBRATION SUMMARY

All site visit and calibration forms are attached, detailing the pre- and post-maintenance calibrations.
Pre-Maintenance Calibration Summary:
All meteorological sensors were tested on the non-tipping tower. The upper sensors were then
relocated to the CASTNET tipping tower and were re-verified.
Maintenance Activity Summary:
O3 – The ozone analyzer and the station ozone reference were compared against a Level 2 transfer
standard. The ozone analyzer failed 1 test point. The station reference passed all pre-maintenance
checks. The station reference was replaced with a different instrument that had a recent ARSlaboratory 6x6 certification. Post-replacement/adjustment checks were within specifications for both
the site analyzer and the station reference.
Wind Speed/Wind Direction – The wind speed sensor failed a single as-found linearity point. Both
sensors were relocated to the CASTNET tower and post-replacement checks were within field
acceptance criteria.
Ambient Temperature – The ambient temperature sensor was compared to a NIST-traceable RTD
in a water bath and passed at all test points.
Solar Radiation – A calibration check against a collocated certified standard confirmed this sensor
to be within field acceptance criteria. No adjustments were necessary during this visit.
Precipitation – The tipping bucket precipitation gauge was tested with a known volume of water,
metered into the sensor with a calibration orifice. The sensor responded within specification.
Relative Humidity – The relative humidity sensor was compared with a collocated transfer
standard and was found to be within field acceptance criteria. The sensor was replaced with a lab
certified replacement and post checks were also within acceptance criteria.
CASTNET – The mass flow controller was found to be between 4-5% low as compared to a NISTtraceable piston prover. The sensor was calibrated and post-adjustment checks were within
specification.

Elizabeth was on-site to assist with the relocation of sensors on the meteorology tower.
Monitoring Shelter
The equipment shelter is a room in the fire house. All equipment appears to be in good
operational condition.

Comments: This 49i would not communicate with the NIST SRP using the traditional 49i NIST drivers. We set the
serial output to Streaming and turned off all the outputs except for the Ozone. The output rate was set at every
10 seconds and left at that setting. We were able to use the 2B Driver to collect data. These settings were not
returned to the original settings. According to the “Transfer Standards For Calibration of Air Monitoring Analyzers
for Ozone”
(http://www.epa.gov/ttn/amtic/files/ambient/qaqc/OzoneTransferStandardGuidance.pdf)
The Pass/Fail criteria for a Verification (6 by 6) is a % RSD of a minimum of six slopes over six days of 3.7% or less.
The 49i was 0.09%. And a Standard Deviation of a minimum of six intercept over six days of 1.5 or less. The 49i
was 0.09. And an average Slope of 1.00 ±0.03 and an intercept of 0.0 ±3ppb. Your 49i’s average slope is 0.9959
and the average intercept is ‐0.1234. All criteria have PASSED. The 49i’s internal slope was set at 1.0 and the
intercept is 0.0 and was not changed.. The Ozone concentration were run, on an average at 483, 444, 406, 370,
333, 297, 262, 229, 196, 167, 122, 73, 34 and 9 ppb and all the raw data are included in the attached excel
spreadsheets. Your next Re‐Verification will be due by 07/23/15.
